  1. I just pulled the drivers side head off my 88 gl wagon, and would like any thaughts on weather I should spend the 50 bucks to have the head pressure tested? I pulled it for a blown head gasket. 160/160 160/96 on the guage. Also is the NAPA head gasket OK? The counter man tells me it's a one time tourque gasket.
  2. Which way to go?????? The motor has 177,000 on it. I have looked at the different options with the head and just don't know what is best. I do all my own work. Replacing the head cost 150 bucks or more if I do the work. Head gasket, pressure check, resurface or remanufactured head. Some say don't put a new head on one side and not do the bottom end and the other side to. So maybee a create motor is the way to go. I don't Know. Who is the best create motor seller? The time to do all this is worth somthing. With a create motor its just pull and swap. HELP!
  3. My local shop wants 50 bucks to pressure test the head. 50 bucks to resurface in so for the pressure test I spend 50, If the head is no good it's still 50. Iam thinking I mite as well get a remanufactured head. Dose this make sense? If I replace one head but not the other will I get some miles out of the car? What a can of worms!
  4. I am doing the left side head gasket. I got most of the stuff out of the way, but am having trouble with the intake bolts. I dont want to brake them off. Some one told me to heat them and smack em with a hammer. Will this work or is it a bad idea? I have been soaking them with Blaster. Thanks
  5. Sounds like lots of poeple have used the NAPA head gasket. I think I will go that route and no sealent or what ever the gasket maker specifies. I will get the other gasket you talked about and should be set. Thanks
  6. I checked out the parts bin head gasket, at 20 bucks is this OK? I don't live by a dealer but want good quality parts. thanks
  7. How much time do think in takes to get to the point where you can pull a head? Mine is the drivers side. I have allready started soaking some bolts with Blaster. Those exhaust bolt look like they could be trouble. I would like to do this with out pulling the motor for time saving, and I don't have an engine hoist. NAPA sales the head gasket for 30 bucks a piece. Is this a good part? The local machine shop want 50 for the resurface and 50 for the preassure check. Is this nessary? I can check the head for warpage myself with a feeler, but do I need the other stuff? Thank You for the info! I really want to keep this car on the road. Well mabee some off roading
  8. The neddle never touched the red.I shut in down right away. I think the head gasket was going before this happened. the motor never burned much oil and the compression is 150 in 3 cylinders. What should the compression be? I couldn't find it?
  9. Thanks so much for the responce. The low cylinder is the on the left or drivers side. I tried to fine the compression value in my chiltons, no luck. I would like to fix this car right so I can get many more fun years out of it, but also money is a factor. where can I get a quality head gasket, no subi dealers in my area. thanks
  10. The motor in my 88 got slightly hot. OK blown head gasket time! Three cylinders at 150 lbs one at 96. This motor ran strong before the head gasket blew, burned no oil. My question is this, can I just pull the motor, replace one head gasket and keep on going, or do I need to do a more extensive repair? The low cylinder is on the left side. do I need to pull the motor to make the repair? thanks so much I love this car.
  11. Hi, The AC and Fan in my 90 legacy works when it wants to. Sometimes turning thr car off and back on will cause it to work again. Anyone have this problem? Thanks
  12. My trusty 88 wagon just started blowing the antifreeze out the tail pipe. It ran well before this,is it worth fixing the head of should I find a new engine? The car is near perfect, but at 177,000 I am not sure if I should put the money into this engine or find a new used one. Any ideas? Thanks
  13. Can anyone tell me the best place to get replacement CV axles for my Legacy? Thanks
  14. Is there any model to look for to find a dual range gear box or transmission?
  15. I replaced all the front engine stuff T-belts,seals,and what not. Never touched any thing on the back of the engine and when I went to shift into reverse,I got grinding. I shut the engine off, pushed in the clutch,it felt normal, put it in reverse, and started the engine. It worked fine! I drove it and all was OK. Then it happned again. Did I bump somthing? or is somthing just wearing out?
  16. Thank for all this info, looks like I need to start looking for a parts car. Maybee one all rotted out or blown motor of such. thanks
  17. No Subarus in junk yards here in the land of Buicks, and Crown Victorias, That Sucks If I can find out where to get one online I would buy it today as my car is parked untill I get one. thanks
  18. My timing belt/seals/water pump project has gone well with the help of this board, but now I am stuck again. When I pulled the thing apart I found a 2 inch piece of 25mm rubber hose stuck between the water pump and the water intake tube, now I see why. The old water pump had a bunch of pea size gouges in the walls of the port the intake tube fits into, OK so I am thinking there was trouble getting the tube out or what I don't know. On reassambly I find that the tube just bearly touches the inside of the port when the mounting bolt is installed. I don't want to repeat the performance of the mechs that worked before me so I guess I need a new tube. Can anyone tell me where I can find a good intake tube.
  19. Anyone know what all is required to turn a 4x2 into a 4x4. I bought a showroom perfect 88 wagon. Not a spot of rust, not even a door ding, but it's a 2wd. First 2wd I have owned. The 5 4wd's I owned before this were never this pretty.
  20. That type of puller is used for pulling the crank and cam sprockets? I want to replace the seals but not sure how to get them off Sorry for all the dumb questions but, I bought two manuals online and have not recieved them yet. Thanks David C
  21. thanks for the reply, I cleaned it up and it looked felt OK to my parts guy and just went with new seals.
  22. Can anyone tell me what is cosidered excessive wear and gauling of the oil pump? I got mine off but really don't know what I am looking for. thanks
