  1. PROJECT UPDATE / NON-UPDATE: The calipers I have came from SubaruJawn, I think off a late 80s EA82T XT. I went to 1stsubaruparts.com and found Rear Caliper Seal Kit #25191GA550. The website had them listed for Loyales with Rear Discs, but was pretty sure I have read on here that all our rear calipers are the same, so I bought them. Waited 10 days. Got them, in the Fuji Heavy Industries box, and they are the exact same size and shape as the cheap raybestos kits I already have, which don't fit. I mic my rear caliper piston at 1 and 3/16" on the dot, and the seals are for a piston which would mic at around 1 and 3/8". Wtf. So, now I'm looking for advice. Were there multiple different rear calipers on EA82 cars? Does anyone know which are which? Does anyone have any ideas on how to get my hands on a reseal kit for this stupid 1 and 3/16" Tokico caliper that is ruining my life?
  2. I think the whole benefit of forums like this is to share a ton of information in one place and then re-condense it on a regular basis. I think lots of the older write-ups and FAQs should be revamped and refined.
  3. I saw those. Personally, I've had bad luck with and have aversions to cheap reman stuff.
  4. Alright, I just caved and got overhaul kits for all 4 calipers so that I can just be done with this endlessly slow brake project. Got cam seals, too, so as not to waste the shipping. Expensive. Anyway, if anyone else has other info or secret parts numbers that have tricked some O'Reillys employee into giving them what they actually needed to overhaul EA82 rear calipers, please still post it here.
  5. Got rear brakes off a turbo model, and although the price was good, they came pretty crunchy. Been working through cleaning them up and need to redo the rubber seals and such, but no one can seem to order me the right parts. My caliper piston mics at exactly 1 3/16", which is what is listed in the computer for all the stuff that gets ordered, and then when the rubber kit comes, its obviously wrong and for a kit with all the same seals, but a noticeably wider piston. Has anybody negotiated this in the past? Any advice? I can order a Soob Dealer overhaul kit, but those are also $30 per wheel for little rubber seals, so I'd rather avoid it.
  6. Thanks, 81EA81, I'm looking at a complete EA81, a pair of reman heads, a polished crank, ea71 pistons, gaskets, alternator, starter, and maybe a few other little odds and ends. The price doesn't seem bad at all, based on your list. I'm going to look at it all tomorrow, what should I be looking for / wary of?
  7. I've been thinking about getting an engine to rebuild as a project and learning process, since I've never done one before. I saw an EA-81 with a rod knock for sale, but not knowing as much about engines as I'd like to, I'm not sure what the implications of that are, with regards to restoring the motor. I'm one of those people that learns how something works best by taking it totally apart and putting it back together correctly, and I enjoy that process, but I also don't have a frame of reference as to how much money, time, and challenge I'd be looking at. I'd love to hear some wisdom from guys who've done this stuff a lot. And what would you pay for that engine if you decided to pick it up?
  8. Thank you, I ended up having to wire brush the crap out of the wires and terminals, but got connection again. Looks like a new battery is in my future as well, but its firing up for the moment.
  9. My daily driver is an 86 EA82 4x4 Wagon with a manual choke Weber, took it to the store today, started with no problem, as always. Drive to the store, parked, spent about 40 minutes in the store, and came back out to totally dead ignition. Key turn made the tach needle jump up and drift back down, but didn't get lights, sounds of any kind, or even clock. Dome light still worked. Tried to push start it twice and it wasn't interested. Buddy from the store came out and jumped me, battery terminal to battery terminal, and it fired right up. Volt gauge ran strong the whole way home, as always. Pulled in the driveway, turned it off, tried it again and instantly had no ignition response again. Thoughts? Electrical isn't my strong suit, and I've got limited time to fix it before my work week starts again.
  10. Thanks you guys. It's definitely the oil pan gasket, the previous owner torqued it down wrong and you can see the split spot in the cork gasket. Hopefully it wont be anything worse than that once we get it opened up. If we had a covered garage and a hoist, I'd think about pulling it for this job, but since we'll be doing it with hand tools in an open driveway... it is what it is. The only thing I have a question about is the use of RTV. I've read people who passionately warn against RTV and recommend only anaerobic sealant, and I've also read that plenty of people use RTV and are happy with it. Anyone else want to weigh in on this issue? We've got a few days before we tear into it. Thanks again.
  11. My roommate and I need to replace the oil pan gasket on his 85' EA82 wagon, anybody got any tips, warnings, or thoughts on doing this under the car without pulling the engine?
  12. I have these days with no second vehicle. Demoralization = 2 mile, dirty-handed, city-walk to NAPA and back. Good luck.
  13. Got my stuff from Jawn today, fast shipping, very straight forward transaction. Will buy parts again. Thanks!

  14. I can't make this date, but I'd like to see it turn into a semi-regular thing, and I'd be very into attending in the future. Good call on having something separate from the modern sports car vibe.
  15. A-ha! The answers never stop around here. Thanks!
  16. Hey guys, been reading the board a lot for the last 2 months since I got my 86 GL Wagon. Mainly been buying things it needed out of the parts section and reading tech stuff. Still trying to figure out how to get the forum to count my posts, waiting for PM abilities so I can conduct business like a grownup. haha. I'm up in the Seattle area, got a 2" lift on the wagon, next enhancements are the rear discs and 6-lug conversion. We'll see from there. Take care.
