high idle, off shiftpoints
svxcess replied to 12340987's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXMy 92 leg has it's second filter located on drivers side of engine, down low by the valve cover. It's a small, black unit with two hoses "one for in" the other out. It is held in place by a braket with a bale clip for removal. I don't know for sure that the 96' leg would have one but i'm sure it does. Subaru has kits at the dealer "filter, hoses, clamps, bracket etc. for about 15 bucks. My svx didn't come stock with one, but they did make the kit for it so I added it. Anyway locate the two metal lines comming out of your tranny "drivers side" follow them forward to radiator and you'll know for sure. The TPS on throttle body is some variable resistor type and some say it will cause shifting problems too. The square adj. for brake band is spose to be all the way in clockwise then out 3 turns but please don't quote me on this...there are threads with the proceedure. Your O2 sensor would be included with your CEL system so if your light is out it's probably ok. Good luck.

high idle, off shiftpoints
svxcess replied to 12340987's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX1234, The square headed screw on top of tranny is brake band adj. for changing shift behavior...Unless you read up on the adj. proceedures indepth it would be best to leave it alone. High idle could be a bunch of things...from an O2 sensor to a tight throttle cable. You didn't state mileage of your car, but my 2.2 with higher mileage doesn't run the same all the time...specially when cold. You should have the OBD-II system in yours. The check engine light needs to be addressed. Also, there should be 2 tranny filters..one in the tranny itself..and one in line from tranny to cooler in radiator. It goes without saying your about to know more about Subie's...good luck.

Has Subaru Peaked?
svxcess replied to 9098's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXSubies seem to be an addiction, a paradox and maybe even obsession. There quick but not real fast...a looker with some looks...and dependable to the hilt...unless it breaks down...rarely. I drive subies because I like them...quirks and all. All I know is in the months of cold, frozen weather my ol' 92 leg wag always goes chug..chug..chug..bang and starts and it's been doing it for years! Peaked? I don't think so.

Gasket Leaks
svxcess replied to webguy's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIt sounds like you've had this car since about new. You at one time "maybe now" had a warranty on this car, right? I certainly would check with SOA, Subaru of America. They have a 1-800 number. I haven't heard of head gaskets blowing every 25k on phase2, 2.5 engines. Keep us posted on this interesting event. Sorry bout your bad luck tho.

1987 Subaru GL - no start, dist. rotor not turning
This sounds like a ea-82, they have two belts. Either one will stop the engine from running if not on right.

Question for you all........
svxcess replied to Linda's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXLinda, A 96 legacy with 115k is a great car. Drive for the next 20k then think of all this.

Looking for a new Sube; multiple questions
svxcess replied to a post in a topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI agree with all this. I'd go 5 speed, and if your going in hawk for 8 grand you should have alot of buying power. Why not have your bank lend you the money "at a lower interest rate" and then you can buy from private party, where you will save alot over high pressure car dealers. A 3.0 H-6 would really be cool. Good luck

Susie K Decides to Sell car...Excellent 1999 Legacy Outback
svxcess replied to Susie K's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXSusie K. 99 leg outbacks with 75k are very nice. I wouldn't sell it over lousy head gaskets. I'll bet you can find a good deal if you search. Like Dr. RX I do all my own work and wish i was closer too, "I love to snub dealers." While Californians are much closer than Washintonians, everybody knows the best mechanics are from Wash. "joking." A fairly accomplished mechanic with this site for info could maybe even do it. Best of luck, you probably even have the pretty green model with a five speed.

Engine Swap, a tale of Woe, Ignorance and Rank Stupidity!
svxcess replied to DDad's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXNeat story DDad....their's various sensors that make my 2.2 run at 1500rpm for the first minute or so...or if it's an auto just put in gear..should drop rpm...by the way does the daughters BF get to buy the new engine?
