  1. My 92 leg has it's second filter located on drivers side of engine, down low by the valve cover. It's a small, black unit with two hoses "one for in" the other out. It is held in place by a braket with a bale clip for removal. I don't know for sure that the 96' leg would have one but i'm sure it does. Subaru has kits at the dealer "filter, hoses, clamps, bracket etc. for about 15 bucks. My svx didn't come stock with one, but they did make the kit for it so I added it. Anyway locate the two metal lines comming out of your tranny "drivers side" follow them forward to radiator and you'll know for sure. The TPS on throttle body is some variable resistor type and some say it will cause shifting problems too. The square adj. for brake band is spose to be all the way in clockwise then out 3 turns but please don't quote me on this...there are threads with the proceedure. Your O2 sensor would be included with your CEL system so if your light is out it's probably ok. Good luck.
  2. 1234, The square headed screw on top of tranny is brake band adj. for changing shift behavior...Unless you read up on the adj. proceedures indepth it would be best to leave it alone. High idle could be a bunch of things...from an O2 sensor to a tight throttle cable. You didn't state mileage of your car, but my 2.2 with higher mileage doesn't run the same all the time...specially when cold. You should have the OBD-II system in yours. The check engine light needs to be addressed. Also, there should be 2 tranny filters..one in the tranny itself..and one in line from tranny to cooler in radiator. It goes without saying your about to know more about Subie's...good luck.
  3. Congrats on your new svx. Along with eng/tran rebuild don't forget to check your radiator for cracks. Also rear wheel brgs.
  4. Subies seem to be an addiction, a paradox and maybe even obsession. There quick but not real fast...a looker with some looks...and dependable to the hilt...unless it breaks down...rarely. I drive subies because I like them...quirks and all. All I know is in the months of cold, frozen weather my ol' 92 leg wag always goes chug..chug..chug..bang and starts and it's been doing it for years! Peaked? I don't think so.
  5. It sounds like you've had this car since about new. You at one time "maybe now" had a warranty on this car, right? I certainly would check with SOA, Subaru of America. They have a 1-800 number. I haven't heard of head gaskets blowing every 25k on phase2, 2.5 engines. Keep us posted on this interesting event. Sorry bout your bad luck tho.
  6. This sounds like a ea-82, they have two belts. Either one will stop the engine from running if not on right.
  7. Both of my subaru's have higher mileage and run pretty close to perfect...what can I say...
  8. Linda, A 96 legacy with 115k is a great car. Drive for the next 20k then think of all this.
  9. I agree with all this. I'd go 5 speed, and if your going in hawk for 8 grand you should have alot of buying power. Why not have your bank lend you the money "at a lower interest rate" and then you can buy from private party, where you will save alot over high pressure car dealers. A 3.0 H-6 would really be cool. Good luck
  10. Susie K. 99 leg outbacks with 75k are very nice. I wouldn't sell it over lousy head gaskets. I'll bet you can find a good deal if you search. Like Dr. RX I do all my own work and wish i was closer too, "I love to snub dealers." While Californians are much closer than Washintonians, everybody knows the best mechanics are from Wash. "joking." A fairly accomplished mechanic with this site for info could maybe even do it. Best of luck, you probably even have the pretty green model with a five speed.
  11. Longview is a place that everyone around here has heard of like "the north pole" but no one has actually been there...sounds like a great place to vanish.
  12. Neat story DDad....their's various sensors that make my 2.2 run at 1500rpm for the first minute or so...or if it's an auto just put in gear..should drop rpm...by the way does the daughters BF get to buy the new engine?
  13. This describes my sound to a tee...I know what I gotta do...thanks for input.
  14. I have a 92 leg wag with 145k. For a while I've noticed that the rear axle brgs. seem to kinda growl a wo..wo..wo..especially when cornering. I've owned the car for years and untill recently never paid attention to it. SO...my question to all Legacy owners with higher mileage is...does yours do it, anybody had bearing failure or the wo..wo..wowo..sound comin from the rear?
  15. U just saved a bunch of money doin it urself, and it's great to know there's in car clearence to change head gaskets, at least on the 2.5.
  16. XSNRG, The first pic "left" looks great. As a guy who has longed for any kind of upgrade on my 92 Leg wag, I would love to know how much I wouldn't have to pay for upgrades...and where to find.
  17. Don't forget the ea82 has a distributor, and it can be easily adj. for peak advance curve. Believe it or not my old '88 fwd xt non turbo took an old datsun 260 z for the first half mile, " I had the hold it in first 4eat when it hit about 7 grand i'd flip the button to hit 2nd gear and the 260 z had fun catching me "the z had a manual." Anyway 97 horse never felt better!
  18. Thanks Keith. Several ads in local paper this week offering 15" wheel/tires for subaru wagons. Looks like I won't get stuck this winter.
  19. In the old days when all my subies had 4 on 140mm it was easy. With winter closing in I am wondering, does my 92 legacy wagon have to have 14" wheels? Are all the 5 bolt patterns the same, and would 15" wheels work on my wagon? Please edjucate me...thanks
  20. Hello. The thought of buzzing around New Zealand in a twin subie , AH thats extreme cool, a step up from way cool. Welcome to Subaru everything...and the kitchen sink. 92 Pearlie svx 92 Leg wag 140k
  21. Bociba, I too have a 92 SVX it has the same noise, trust me I know what a trick it is to really find the "tunk, tunk, tunk " noise that does sound like it picks it up every rev. I'm really leaning on the cracked flex plate theroy. I worried whether it was crank bearing or rod but the car has run 3 years with this and nothing has broke yet. The engine seems to run great so I don't know when I'll really find it. If I do I'll let you know. Over on www.subaru-svx.net there's a bunch of info. I still think flex plate torgue converter thing tho.:-\
  22. thanx rweddy, I knew there had to be one more out there. This gives me great hope that once again my little wagon will act normal. 92 SVX 92 leg wagon and used to own 88 XT best car I ever owned.
