  2. Hello, I was reading in the Haynes manual about a relay (i think) for a hose leaving the cannister. I am having some light fuel vapors enter the cabin and want to test it. Where is this located? Also, I recently replaced my fuel filter. following the haynes manual, I depressurized the system by disconnecting the fuel sending unit and running the engine. there was no fuel pressure to begin with (ie when i started it to run the fuel out of the lines, it never even started). Is this cause for concern? I have checked the lines for leaks thinking that a crack in a line would lower fuel pressure and allow vapors to enter the cabin, but may have missed some parts of the line (i was only able to find them near the tank and in the engine compartment).   3. I removed the cover for fuel sending unit access in the back driver's side. It turns out, the wires had completely frayed and broken off. I haven't tried yet, but I will reconnect them soon and hopefully be back in business. Any special precautions? I plan on reattaching them very well and wrapping with electrical tape.

  5. Legacy777: I looked under the seat and found the connections (4), and what appeared to be fuel lines??? Can you explain this area in greater detail? I took a picture but then found I couldn't attach it. Thanks, Andrew
  6. Thanks, I'll try that first. The check engine light came on, and remains on, when the gauge broke- are the two related? I am used to the CEL turning back off after a few startups...or will it stay on until the gauge is fixed? Thanks again, Andrew
  7. I have a '99 outback. I recently filled the tank, and next time I came to drive it, the fuel guage was resting on the stop pin past low. Thinking it could be stuck (I dont know how it works by the way), I turned the car off then back on. This time, the check engine light was on. I checked the fuel cap. I looked underneath the dash and noticed a green wiring harness that was disconnected and hanging down. One wire was black with a red stripe and the other was blue with gray dots. Could this be for the guage? On a similar note, my low fuel warning light went out (I think I ran it too low for too many times perhaps). Is this an easy fix?
  8. Thanks- you were right. I suppose this attests both to the durability of the Subaru (can take a nose dive in sand at 40 mph with no problem) and my presumptuous tendencies!
  9. Hello all, I have a 99 with a 2.5l and 111000miles. I live about 10 miles from pavement via a dirt/sand road. Recently, I hit a pocket of soft sand, and my front hit sand and sprayed it up everywhere. Everything ran normally after that, I made two 15 minute trips and checked under the hood and all seemed normal. I took out the air cleaner and knocked all the dust out of it too. Today (three days later) I tried to start it up. It started fine, idled for about two seconds then stalled. I tried again, this time giving it some gas and it revved up to about 4 and I could hold it there running, but the second I let off, it immediately stalled. Not sure if this is relevant, but I could also hear a click or small knock after it stalled (sounds like a pencil hitting plastic). Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am currently semi-stranded. Thanks, Andrew
  10. Yeah, it is a repetitive clicking...not just once per braking. I cant do my own brake work, but I will get this checked soon. I am going on a road trip tomorrow and need to know if this is a safety issue. Thanks
  11. 99 Leg. Outback with 101k miles and rising rapidly I had the front brakes and rotors replaced about 20k ago because there was vibration with heavy braking. A week after that, a clicking sound started when i lightly applied the brakes (as in coasting up to a stop light), that went away under heavy braking. I took it back to the place, and they said everything was fine and not to worry. It only got worse (and of course i had moved 2000 miles away by then) and i took it to a local place. They said that the original brake replacers never lubed them, so this place did and the brakes were good for about 1000k. Now, they click again under most braking conditions, but mostly under light braking. Neither mechanic was too concerned with this problem. Is it unsafe to drive? thanks, andrew ps. the suspect brake has a thin layer of yellowish corrosion and feels dry...does it need lube? what kind?
  12. 99 legacy outback 2.5L So I had a loose spark plug, and retightened it. Every time I would start the engine it went in reverse fine. When I put it in forward and begin to accelerate, the engine would drop RPMs to way below idle RPMs, then a few seconds later, begin to accelerate normally. So I figured it had to do with the loose spark plug problem. I took it in to get a Heli-Coil for the #2 plug, and had plugs and wires changed as well. $350 later...the engine is a lot smoother, but still drops RPMs (and feels its about to stall) when I switch from reverse to drive and begin to accelerate. When the engine is warm, this doesnt happen. What is going on? Thanks, Andrew
