  1. I had changed the tire earlier and checked for play with both hubs. No play and there was no heat coming from the calipers that i could tell of. The wired part is that when I pulled off the road and stopped then started going again the shaking stopped for a while then started again. Looks like ill probably be changing an axle at a truck stop tomorrow. Sigh.
  2. Sorry I left out some details. It is a 2002 Subaru legacy gt. Sorry for the misspelled words I am posting from my phone.
  3. I am broke down at a truck stop 60 miles from home andneed some input. My fronds passenger axle has been going out and on my trip tonight my car started shakin real bad. My steering will keeps syaking and pulling to the side. Could a bad axle cause this problem or is it more likely something else? I took the tires off and they both look good and the tie rods look ok the only problem I can see is the torn boot on the axle. I need some input fast please and thank you.
  4. Got it! Ended up buying a belt wrench that was just barely to small but due to the dents i was able to get it on and loosen it up, now I just have to hope that was my only leak guess i will find out tomorrow. Going through a pint and a half of atf every 40 miles was getting expensive. Thanks for all of your support guys, I love learning more about my girl! Couldnt have done all the work without these boards.
  5. Thank you, i kind of thought about doing that but didnt want to compramise it any more just in case. Will give it a try, thanks!
  6. I am trying to get off my AT filter off of my 2002 legacy with the 2.5. it is the external round oil filter type and I can not get it off. I have dented in the end of it trying to get it off with filter plyers and it just wond budge, the filter is damaged and I now have fluid pouring out from it. Are there any tricks out there to get these dang things off, should I worry about denting the ends or just beat the hell out of it. Pleas help I need my car tomorrow and I cant drive it till i get it off. Thanks!
  7. Thanks for all the input I apologize for a lack on info I'm on the road and using my phone to post. It is a 2002 legacy gt with the 2.5 in it. I am only getting 250 miles tops on just under 14 gallons of fuel, I never go of the gushed always by the odometor. I tried fuel cleaner with no help and I have my check engine light on which I believe is because of my 02 sensor. I think it has gone out due to my transmision fluid leaking on the exaust pipe. Would a bad 02 sensor make me get that much worse mpg though? I want to try the easy things first before I mess with the filming again just because I am new to doing this. I was a little concerned about the timing when I put the belt on just because I wasnt sure if the belt move to far back when I pulled the pin on the tensioner. it looked good I just was so nervous I second guessed myself. The car rodent run " rough" so I just assume the filming was correct. Would it run all right if it was one tooth off though? Thanks again guys this board is an amazing resource of knowledge from amazing Subaru lovers!
  8. So about a month ago I got my engine back in after doing a timing belt and head gasket replacement. It was my first time ever attempting something so big. The car runs good now ( minus a atf leak) but ever since I got it running again I get really bad gas mileage. I used to get about 300 miles a tank and now get only 240 or 250 a tank. Any ideas on why this might be. should i replace the plugs and wires? Or is there something else I could have done wrong? It just seems wired that the mielage went down after the removal. The plugs are a little old but it just doesn't make sense that they would make a big difference after removing them. Any ideas would help.
  9. seems to be running a lot better now with the harness plugged all the way in, still just a tad rough but that it probably due to old spark plugs and wires. I will trade those out tonight and see where it gets me:) thanks for your input guys i couldnt have dont this project without this awesome website. Now if I could only get my heater hose to tighten up enough to stop dripping coolant I will be all set! You guys rock!
  10. I used a fel pro gasket set on it, I did not check the valve clerance, guuess I should have and I will know better for next time. I did find that my wire harness that goes to the spark distributor was not on tight, I broke the clamp on it a while back so it can slide off if im not careful. Havent had a chance to drive it yet since i slid that on tight waiting for the kid to go to sleep. Hopefully that is all it was I will let you know I wonder about the timing because I have also heard that it runs like absolute crap when it is one tooth off but mine runs decent some of the time. I would think if it was the timing it would do it all the time. Ill keep ya posted!
  11. What should I do and what should I look for when testing it. Sorry I am still learning a lot and have never had to do this. I do have a compression gauge but dont know what I should be looking for. Thanks for the reply it is much appreciated!
  12. I should also mention that it seems that my engine tick that is so common with subaru engines seems to be a little bit louder then it was before this whole project began, when I put my ear by the intake manifold on each side you can here it ticking in the head area. Maybee its just becaue my valves are old but just thought i would through that in there for some more info on the situation.
  13. Ok I just got my engine back in and everything hooked up after doing a head gasket change and replacing the timing belt kit and water pump. I am working on a 2002 legacy gt with the 2.5 L. The car starts and runs but I am having some issues. When I first start it it wants to die and just stop running, once it warms up a little it runs a lot better but it is still just a little off. I was driving it in my neighborhood just a minute ago and while I was going about 30 mph it just cut out and then jolted back again. For the most part it drives ok but once in a while it just stutters. Im wondering if i have the timing belt just a little bit off, when I pulled the pin on the tensionor and moved the drivers side cam back a little Im wondering if i moved it a little to far. Would the car run fairly decent if the timing belt on the driver cam was off by just a little and cause it to stutter like it is or is there something else from any of you guys experience that I should check for. This was my first ever head gasket change/timing belt/ and engine removal and I just dont know where to go from here. Should I just take the timing belt off and try to reset it or is there something simpler that I should look for first. Thanks for any of your input!
  14. Would it harm anything to run my legacy with the belt for the power steering pump off. i just got done with a headgasket replacement and when I started it one of ky pilots sound bad and I want to make sure its not something o n the timing belt.
  15. Working on a 2002 legacy gt and i am done with the exception of one air hose. I labeled them all when i took them off but I must have mis labeled one set. It is an L shape conector piece. both ends are male and would slide into the size of hose that goes to the air box. I will post the pic to see if anyone recognizes the piece or could look on another legacy to help me out.\\
  16. I am almost done with my engine install but in the process some of my labels fell off and I have two wires left. Does any one have a pic they can send me off a 2002 legacy engine so I can compare? You might know with out needing pictures where they go. I have two big wies comming off of the battery one is a ground wire and the other is a hot wire that I assume should go to the starter. It has a black rubber top just like the red rubber top that goes to the altenator. Can anyone confirm that the starte is where this goes?
  17. What are the details on the pugnacious and where r u located at. my old boss is looking for one in that price range. She is in idaho falls area.
  18. How much is he charging you to put the engine in. I just moved from Idaho falls but could come back up and do it for 300 dollars. That's way cheaper then a shop.
  19. I would not ever buy a car from a salseman that required an offer before a test drive. they r trying to rip you off. Sounds like this is a risky deal and I would pass on it. Take your time and look for a while and you can get a great subbie for a great price.
  20. I have a friend that is looking at buying an 01 pugnacious ll bean with the 3.0 in it. The engine is bad but it comes with an extra engine from a 03 pugnacious and is the 3.0 also. Are there any suprises I would run into when swapping the engines or is it just a simple swap with all of the harnesses matching up with each other? I have taken engines out before but never done a swap so im just wondering if i should tell her to go ahead and buy it and ill do the work. She is getting it for 3 k and the bossy has 200 k on it with the new engine having 105 k miles. Thanks for any input!
  21. I have an 02 legacy and the tx slipped out just a little when removing the engine. I was able to slip it right back into place and when I manually turn the tx I can hear fluid slushing around. Am I safe to assume that everything is in place and I can bolt the engine back on?
  22. So if the tc is in all the way and I can hear fluid moving around when I manually spin it is it safe to assume that everything is in correctly and I can continue trying to get the engine back in?
  23. Ok this is my first ever engine pull that I had to do to replace the head gaskets, I am in no means a mechanic but I am always up for a challenge. I have the engine all put back together and I am trying to get it put back in but Im not sure if i need to do reseat the torque converter or what that even means. When I pulled the engine the TC came out a little bit, not all the way but probably 3 or 4 inches. Do I need to do anything before I go any further with this project or can I just try and get the engine in place and bolt everything on? Also, should I bolt the engine mounts to the engine before installing or bolt on the mounts to the frame and lower the engine on them? Thanks for any help you can give me!
  24. Ok thanks. One more question then. Will the white mark on the belt stay lined up with the timing Mark on the sprocket so that the line and the mark are slightly right and then :burnout:will move back. Sorry for all the questions but I appreciate your help
