  1. keeps popping out of filler tube. Any suggestions to resolve (o ring)? or do I need to replace the dipstick... (no personal comments that I didn't already think of need apply). Thanks! later, Peter
  2. I got one at my local FLAPS (chain)... was $129 sale was $99. Works great, stays in the pouch behind the seat, can connect to my computer (haven't done that yet)... Have used it on 3 different Subarus & a Ford something... always right on. later, Peter
  3. yes it is "sealant" vs. "gasket" on the '99. Two 2nd opinions> 1. sealant sits for 4-6 hours before refilling the trans fluid. or B. sealant goes on & the fluids in... all done in an hour or so. (btw... same question arises regarding the valve cover gaskets, also leaking). OPINIONS PLEASE! also, one of the 2nd opinion shops put it on a lift/CLEANED THE AREA (which dickwad 1 didn't do) & pointed to a spot where the sealant wasn't oozing from the pan & figured that was the leak. Thinking, let them do the valve cover gaskets & I'll do the trans pan sealant when I get home in a couple of weeks... that job looks pretty straight forward. later, Peter & thanks, gentlemen!!!!
  4. brought (took?) my '99 OBW to a shop to have the "transmission serviced". They had indicated that the trans pan was leaking so I might as well... Then they decided it was the "tail shaft gasket" since the leakage was nearer to the back of the trans pan. This more than doubled the cost of the replacement. I just took the car back (cost me $40 for the re-look). So: 1. is there a more definitive way to decide "trans pan or tail shaft" gasket? 2. is this a job that can be tackled in the driveway? 3. Advice? thanks later, Peter
  5. I was truly surprised as well... but checked the VIN with a local dealer... Maybe I'll try another dealer see if the answer's the same. Easy enough to buy the fobs & program them but to wire in the entire dealy (if not plug & play)... not worth it. My wife will have to accept that one. later, Peter
  6. A 2002 Impreza with out keyless entry? It appears to be true. Can this be added after market with out too much trouble or cost? thanks (AGAIN) later, Peter "search" has proved spooky... lots of wiring vs. plug & play. will work the doors vs. won't work the doors (seperate modules for door locks?)... HELP!
  7. ex-Far Rockaway boy here... the impreza's driven by an ex LI-ite. later, Peter
  8. Although, this car is unfamiliar to me & I'm not, currently, anywhere to inspect it, my wife assures me that the gauge doesn't go above the upper normal limit & always comes back down to lower normal level. To me, it would seem like these fluctuations would be more indicative of the thermostat than the gauge. I would guess, based on the previous responses, that an inferior thermostat may just open more often or at a different time than the OEM. & I would check the sending unit as the alternate trouble maker. I may get to inspect/change the thermostat this week as I MAY get a visit from my current wife... seems like a quick & easy resolve... if that's not it, the sending unit will be my next deal... just want to be extra cautious about the air in the coolant concern. OK dokey... later, Peter
  9. Original Poster here... 1. pegged meant: reaches full operating temp & stays there, no fluctuation. B. I think the thermostat is my next step... unfortunately, I'm about 200 miles away right now & will be until after Christmas but! that'll be the first thing I do. III. Having two other OBs (99 & 96) I am fully aware of the air in the coolant problem/challenge/concern/worry! Hope it stays good until I get home again.... thanks folks. You guys are wonderful! & I mean that in a good way. later, Peter
  10. 2002 Impreza OBW (81k) that we've had for about a week now. My wife's car. We have (had) two Legacy OBWs ('96 & '99)... both keep their temp guage pegged their respective level once they're warmed up & do not move one iota.... the Impreza seems to warm up (not overheat at all) & then drop back down to normal... stays within acceptable range at all times but it does fluctuate. Normal? thanks! later, Peter
  11. Yesterday I sold our '96 OBW with 202,124 miles & felt confident selling it to someone I know & see regularly. It is still solid & sooo comfortable. We still own a '99 OBW (30th ann ed.) & it's not as comfortable in the seat nor does it have the power up the hills... so be it. We now own a 2002 Impreza OBW (if you can call that a wagon).. my wife's new ride... NO dogs allowed. I will inform the new owner of my old '96 of this post & the 300,000 mile mark you've reached.... CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! later, Peter
  12. Yes I agree... I already own a '96 OBW (196+K) & a '99 limited anniversary edition (135k). This would replace the '96 IF I can find the exhaust system parts at a reasonable (not $1,100 for the cat) price. I'll do the work my own self. later, Peter
  13. I may have the opportunity to buy a '98 2.5 OBW that may need an entire exhaust system (vehicle originated in Mass.) the exhaust manifold is rusted & who know how bad the rest of the exhaust system is.... any leads for decent, inexpensive, parts (used seem hard to find)? any suggestions would be appreciated. later, Peter
  14. It was more exciting than that! a mouse had chewed through the wire!!!! I do appreciate the response. the "mechanic" was talking about replacing the entire Brain as it was the likely culprit... maybe a relay... if I was lucky. While we were looking under the hood I saw a wire stricking out through the sheilding.... & asked if that may be the problem... Thanks for your reply, Cougar, since I know this board will offer more help than "guess work" mechanics. Later, Peter
  15. this is for low voltage to injector 1... Anyone know what causes this? where to look for the culprit? fixes? This vehicle (99 OBW) has NEVER given me any problems... love this machine. Any help/ideas/thoughts appreciated. Later, Peter
  16. in my 96 & 99 OBWs (alpine also?) reconnect new battery. Start your engine. while running find that cute little button hanging down by your left foot. Push it... all while the engine is running.... all the beeps & flashing lights & check engine lights will go away. Later, Peter
  17. It wouldn't be too cost effective for Subaru (or any othe manuf.) to produce separate wiring harnesses for each model & each option.... so you're probably looking at the connection for heated seats... don't think it's that unusual. Later, Peter
  18. Yeah, 4th cylinder misfire. I tried to remember if it was raining when this happened. It was today. Maybe half occured during some sort of moisture event. I will try the HEET tomorrow. THANKS. Later, Peter
  19. this was on for P304. Replaced plugs & wires (OEM) months ago. CEL came on again... Schucks tested found P304 again. cleared light. week goes by, yup, P304.... I reset the light (disconnect the battery, push the button). another week... CEL on but before I can get to it (4 days) light goes away. Today it came on again. ran 4 oz. of SeaFoam through brake booster hose. cleared light. & now I'm waiting. Any other ideas what would trip the CEL like this? Inconsistantly. Later, Peter
  20. If you're still looking... try Dan's Subaru Service near the Tualatin GI Joe's. not cheap but they used to be honest & extremely Subaru knowledgable. Later, Peter
  21. I've had this happen to my two OBW (96 & 99). Replaced plugs & wires... all is well. The '96 has a tendancy to through those codes periodically (every 3 - 6 months) I clear the CEL & drive on. Seems to be "very" sensitive to the smallest fluctuations. Later, Peter:cool:
  22. Just had same issue... that is PO 303 (3rd cylinder misfire)... would've had to order wires (& pay a hundred bucks)... & would have had to figure out HTF to get to the 4th cylinder plug. took it to the dealer. done in 55 minutes (although they still wanted to charge for an hour & 1/2)... that solved the problem. NON OEM plugs & wires installed last time this was done (prior to my ownership). Runs smoother, MUCH better gas mileage now. Later, Peter:cool:
  23. '96 OBW discovered during tire switch, no symptoms prior. Repair for $300 (all other shops were higher, by a lot:-\ )... can this be done in a garage with no special tools (other than socket set, wrenches, etc)???? Later, Peter:cool:
  24. It's the back of the back seat... my dog tried to chew through to the other side... NO ONE??? knows where I can get this? all the parts sites seem to only have mats or cargo liners.... A LITTLE HEP HERE!
  25. I just took my lovely '99 OBW (30th ann ed) for a nice little trip with my dog... she (my dog), evidently, felt trapped in the back too long. I came out to give her some water & she chewed the carpet from behind the back seat. ANYONE able to help me locate a replacement (96-99 grey) carpet would???? I would be greatly appreciative ESPECIALLY if this can be done PRIOR to my wife finding out..... THANKS! Later, Peter:cool:
