  1. Ahhh Miles... glad to see you back around... there's a thing in that list above... the radius rod? My '78 Brat can't be reassembled until I get some kind of bushings... the vo-tech teacher called them radius control bushings, the book calls it a leading rod? I have looked everywhere and no one at the parts stores here seem to know what they are... they look a lot like shock tower bushings... Thanks, Mary
  2. bump... for overnight... I really need help here... what would you do? Besides pulling it? The kid needs to be in this school for 2+ years... I don't want to make waves and screw up his time there.
  3. Moosens and The Bard were considering helping me with this, but Paul is so busy and the opportunity came up for my car to go in... so to not be a "nudge" I took it. (Sorry Paul... gonna keep hackin' about the dash) Seemed strange... I had called anonymously about the project and the other teacher refused it, saying that type of work is only handled by seniors in the latter part of the year... Here's the weird part... I never told Joe that I called the school... two days later, he came in and asked when I could bring it there... anyway, come to find out, he had asked this other teacher on his own and this teacher accepted it. The kid could charm the skin off a rattlesnake. The tranny is in... according to the teacher, the car is undriveable because of the "other" broken parts and he won't release it... unless on a tow truck.
  4. I have some problems here... I sent the Brat to the vo-tech to have the tranny and clutch replaced (4 weeks ago!). Anyway, during the last part of the installation, they stripped the brand new cv axle, the part where the nut goes on and the #$@&^% teacher told them to put the cotter pin back on, with the nut free-wheeling! Then he instructed Joe, (Tim's son, (my boyfriend) who is a student there, sorry, gets complicated there) that if the car left their shop, it would have to be on a tow truck because it was unsafe to drive... No &^#$! I sent three (3) manuals that ALL specify 145 ft. lbs torque on that nut. Now I learned there are a few other parts that are toast... I'm not sure what is wrong, teacher never said... I will be sure up call him in the morning to get the whole lowdown. I am so upset, they screwed it up severly... lack of supervision on the part of this one teacher... (a Meineke Muffler drop-out, oh, woe is me! <head bent, dramatic lighting here>). AND he let 2 sophomores do this job! So unfortunately, it was a combination of the lack of knowledge on the part of the teacher, and the over confidence of the students. It's a touchy situation, Joe has to be there for 2 more years to graduate... the teacher has him "in danger of failing" that course. His academics are passing. After speaking to a few... no, SEVERAL graduates, this teacher is a bit questionable as to his abilities. I'm not sure what to do... a tow truck is going to cost over $150. and then buy and fix the stuff here, or leave it get the new parts and have them continue working. Do you think it would be unreasonable to ask for a different teacher to supervise the balance of the repairs? This teacher wouldn't call Tim back to talk it over... says, "he doesn't have time." I know I'll go ballistic if I get up against a wall with the guy... and that's probably likely... now he says there is something wrong with a RADIAL something ... as I said before, I know a lot about parts, but what part would have RADIAL in it, besides tires? Sorry this one escapes me. I need to be as armed as possible with information? He has all my books! Oh Boy! Now, I need to know from you students... how do I handle this? I need to call early tomorrow morning. I appreciate your input!
  5. May I ask what the dealer's name and email/ phone number is? The dealerships here won't touch my '78 Brat for parts. Nice to know some will. Thanks! Mary
  6. That happened to both my Brat and the '72 Jeep that's inside Tim's 1950 Ford F1... changed out the points and condenser... vroom... they both fired right up. Good luck! Mary
  7. Thank you... thank you! Knowing the course this system takes will help track down the problem... it's second nature for you guys... and they don't get into the fundamentals in the manuals... the concentration is all on individual parts. I wish I had a dummy guide showing the fundamentals... gas goes in... spark goes in... boom... pushes this and moves that... spins this... anyone know of one? Thanks again! Mary
  8. bump. Please. Talk to me like I'm 5 years old... the water pump sends the water into the motor comes back out hot... then? What does the thermostat, water temperature sender, temperature gauge (especially this), thermo fan switch, and any other pieces parts do? And in what order? The books tells me all the fine details... the saying goes... you can't see the forest for the trees. I need the big picture. Thanks! Mary
  9. I contacted John to build a new exhaust for me, he responded very quickly, and gave me a cell number to call him on. After speaking, he gave me design choices on the specs (single straight out, dual, side, etc.)... at EXTREMELY reasonable prices. He does think ahead, even made sure shipping was viable, splitting the system so it could be installed with minimal hassle. I wanted chrome stacks coming out of the floor of the bed, but with seats and a roll bar... yikes... no go, no room I found my Brat only needs a donut gasket, but I will definitely call John when I need the exhaust replaced.
  10. Hi John, This car will (by spring) be a show car... I need to get it back to the original configuration. The paint or decal work isn't in original colors but they don't really count that for some reason... nor do they count steering wheels, shifter knobs, foot pedals... I don't know all the rules (yet)?? Instrumentation and interior counts though? Unless it's reconfigured to be custom... then the rules change again? Now, do any of the other parts cause the temperature guage on the dash to malfunction? I guess that's where I need to start. I am soooo confused...
  11. The Brat is almost back together... new tranny, axles, brakes, bearings, etc. (ball joints to come) ...now I need help to tackle the next problem and get parts needed: Symptom: Electric fan doesn't come. Someone installed a manual switch on the dash... one problem, the temperature gauge on dash doesn't move to tell me when to turn it on. I have read in the archives that the cabin heat suffers if the fan runs full time? I know the major parts of this system: radiator, water temperature sender, thermostat, temperature gauge etc... what I need is a simple explanation... what is the order of the chain of events that happen to make all these gizmoes work together?! Yikes! Thanks! Mary
  12. Thanks Turbone, I just did a search... der... should have done that in the first place <blush>... I see that a Toyota one fits, even have a part number F14592... just to make sure I'll take it down and have them match it up... seems lots of things on this truck have been... a'hem... "improvised"? Thanks! P.S. - My stealership refuses to look for parts for something this old.
  13. I'm told I need a "donut" gasket that goes in front of the catalytic converter? What is the real name for it? Does anyone know a part number or where I can get one? My parts supplier isn't showing anything pre-'82? Thanks! Mary
  14. hmmm... my "new" '78 4 headlights silver trim on the dash top center ashtray, unlighted no tach no wheel well trim no side molding sunroof? vinyl seats ?? radio?? it's a Sony aftermarket white spoke wheels One odd thing, my original '78 only had an AM radio, no cassette and side molding, silver wheels (not spoke), blue interior, vinyl seats, roll bar in black... the picture here is the original model, completely stock... I guess I never knew DL from GL?
  15. Hey Connie! Glad to see everything worked out well for you! I'm sooo glad! You guys are great! Hope to see you all sometime! Carlisle is a possibility... towed by a F-O-R-D?! She's a definite trailer queen... Mary
  16. On this side of I-95 it's Wis-tah.... not Woosta... yeah... the Brat is in Vo-tech... 2 weeks now... clutch is in, tranny's in by 2 bolts... and they found a few more front end issues. My brand new Hyundai was rear ended... Yikes! Think it's time for a horse?!
  17. Skip wrote a great shifter fix article. I have it in email. If you have Microsft Word to read it... I'll be happy to send it to you. Mary
  18. You're wrong there Paul! My Brat is the most expensive form of land transportation...
  19. There are a few places... one is in Australia. The problem with trying the repairs yourself is the foam expands and contracts and it opens up again, it actually needs to vacuum formed again. I had limited success with repairing mine... cut out the cracks and fill with wood filler, sand them down and use Truck Bed Liner for a pebbly finish... it looked perfect til it got in the direct heat of the sun... it bubbles up... it may have happened because I put a few coats on one area. The places I hit once were fine, no sun damage. Using a sunshade stopped any further bubbling. It looks better than it did before, even with the bubbles. They sell set ups for people who want to get into the business.. There's a special filler available for DIY. I'm trying to find a useable core to try it out. Anyone have one? I'll let you know how it works out. Let me know how the seats work out too! Thanks! Mary
  20. That'll work... when I get the Brat back, it's at the VoTech having the tranny installed. I'll measure the seats and see what's available in late-model junks at the bone yard and let you know. The upholstery man will want an arm and leg to redo the seats, the innards are a bit worn... (Adam Sandler's "Ode to My Car" describes them pretty well). I'm getting prices of $400 and UP to redo the dash, a new reproduction is $600. Yikes!
  21. Arrrgggh! No can do.... my grandson's 3rd birthday... gotta be Cap'n Hook... or really freak 'em by bein' Seahag (from Popeye), hmmmm... never knew the association til recently, the name came from my love of the sea (can't swim tho) and I'm well... old? Anyway... have a great get together!!
  22. Back in the day, when my first '78 Brat was only 5 or 6 years old, I hauled 4 adults and a dishwasher... she insisted on being dropped into 4WD, the front wheels were a bit skittish pulling alone... same scene hauling 30 patio blocks... two adults up front... on flat road with a speed limit of 35 max in-town.
  23. Does anyone know of any aftermarket seats that will fit a 1978 Brat? Mine are toast and need to be replaced. I have some experience in upholstering, but after really looking, they may be a bit out of my league. Any help is appreciated, especially if you have changed yours out with modifications. Thanks! Mary
  24. Bucky sure looks worth saving! Get a group effort started, ask the people you are kindly carting around to pitch in and then call Rent-A-Wreck (if you have one there)... and get a really cheap rental while yours is being fixed. Check with your insurance co. for an insurance rider rather than using the rental's insurance... it's much cheaper or it could even be part of your policy. Also, maybe your kid's friend at VoTech knows some juniors or seniors that would be willing to help with the repairs, for pizza and a movie pass? Tim had a couple come help sand the 1950 Ford pickup he's restoring. Hang in there! Mary
