  1. Got a P/N for that? I've tried digging through both the AutoZone site and first subaru but couldn't find anything :(

    . Part# Lookup

. Search by Factory Part Number

    . 497001900 (Make: Subaru (duh!))

Also, this is the path to follow in the catalog for a different car:

Fuel system - Fuel induction - Carburetor - Overhaul kit - Overhaul kit

  2. Seems you can get one from Subaru.?

I ordered one from Parts America. http://www.partsamerica.com/

Not in a Subaru box (Niehoff), but the parts in the bag look the same.

Neat part is if a local Shucks or similar store in that chain has it. You can pay for it online (and get it cheaper than in the store) and go pick it up in the store if you want. The nearest Shucks hates me, always picking stuff up without paying.

Now I just gotta get off my rump roast and do the rebuild. Had the kit sitting around for about a year now.

  3. An update....

This problem re-occured so I blocked off the EGR completely. Still had problems.

I'd forgotten this had happened before.

Symptoms start off infrequent and progressively get worse.

I pulled the carb off today, lo-and-behold...

The old coolant getting past the gasket problem. (Should have remembered from last time but I've had to fix so much stuff lately it slipped my mind).

I had put a custom cut gasket below the spacer and the felpro one above the spacer... The only thing I did (as an experiment if I remember rightly) was to NOT cut out the hole for the coolant passage to see if this would completely seal it off. I guess it didn't because water gradually made its way under the gasket and into the intake. Maybe if I'd tightened those front two carb mounting bolts a little tighter?????....

Anyway, cut out two new gaskets today (with coolant holes this time!) and installed a recon carb that came with the car (only had 1 choke pull off compared to the original).

Will reply back if I have any more problems but that should fix the stall on idle problem - for now at least, until the water gets past those gaskets again

  4. 85 through 87 4WD's were carbed. 2WD's, late 87's, and everything after 87 was SPFI, MPFI, or Turbo.

I could weld an extension to one for you, sure.... but I did it to an EA82 (that I don't own anymore), so I would need accurate dimensions of what you need exactly. PM me and we can discuss it.

    GD

Will measure up all the distances and tolerances and pm you...

Can you buy these online new or do you need to use one from a JY?

  5. No problem..I can get that pulled tomorrow

    Cheerz!

Definately clean that EGR by soaking the inside passages with carb cleaner and scrape out the gunk with a screw driver. My cars "stall on idle" problem cleared up after taking care of mine today....

    GD...

Can you "manufacture" one for me?!? ! I don't have a welder and am willing to pay :)

I figured the EA82's were SPFI and had the electronic air-bypass solenoid????

    Steve

  6. Thanks for advice all, it was the EGR.

Cleaned it up today and popped it back on with a new gasket and all is wonderful and smooth again.

(I can't even tell the engine is running when the A/C is on because that is the load configuration where I have the idle speed set to 800). Hurrah for 200k service, new motor and tranny mounts :)

    Steve

  7. samneric..let me finish pulling all that off and I will let you know.. Yes my AC idle-up works..( here is my dumb question...where is it to pull it:-p?..maybe I should open my FSM more huh?)

Unforch the FSM isn't much help for A/C photos. They have a diagram of the vacuum system and the wiring circuit but no photos of the physical equipment because all A/C systems were installed at the dealers and can be of two or three types.

Anyways, Here is a pic of it on (It pulls back a lever that is presently on another carb).

Here is a pic of it off:

    AC%20Throttle%20Kickback%20-%20Off.JPG

It connects via a vacuum line to a vacuum switch near the bank of relays in front of the passenger side strut tower.

  8. Cheers all,

Drugh - I wish the EA81 was computer controlled. I'm gonna do the SPFI swap when I find a good donor. The older subes are purely mechanical with most actuators driven by vacuum, not a computer. Thanks tho.

Spiff - the one thing I did check was take off the air cleaner cover and make sure the choke plate was in its diagonal position - which it was. Maybe not all the way closed though.....

GD - I'll have a peek inside. I know I'm gonna havta drill out the rivets and screw the cover back on so that was gonna be my last test :)

Miles - I will check the EGR - definately haven't cleaned that sucker up - should have done that when I had my engine out - live and learn...

  9. Dunno about flywheels but one piece of advice I can offer from pulling, restoring and replacing my EA81...

    Take the oil dispstick out!

I have snapped the two I own. They can easily get caught when jostling around the engine bay - especially when you're trying to get the engine lined back up to the tranny....

Have fun with the cleaning :) Its good to see the shine come through... A brass wire wheel on a drill does wonders to remove the tough stains after you have cleaned off the loose crusted oil and wet slime with engine cleaner. In fact I used a regular wire brush to clean off the crusty stuff with a newspaper underneath to catch it all. Then I used engine cleaner to clean up the brush.

Looks like the caked on oil has preserved a lot of your exterior components - they'll come out looking sweet when spruced up.

Have you got a car parts cleaner??? Cheap at Harbour Freight.... and worth there weight in gold - if you have space in your garage... I store things on top of it when mine's not in use.

    Steve
