Problem with lights
fud24682000 replied to fud24682000's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I guess I'll have to lay low for a while; I got you going on this for nothing. For once I decided to trouble-shoot in daylight. In the dark I would have seen that my turn signals in front WERE working. When I checked to see if they were working, I was looking at the lens next to the headlights to flash. Instead of looking only at those from the side of the wagon, DUH-- I should have stepped in front a few feet and stooped over, and I would have seen the turn signals flashing away, buried under the front bumper. So it's only the front parking lights that don't work. Sorry, next time I'll do my homework first before getting on here and taking up your valuable time. Sorry, Ray Mac -
Problem with lights

Thanks. The other thing is--unless Subs are different from other vehicles I've owned--the rear turn and hazard lights flash at what appears to be a normal speed, and I would have expected them to flash more slowly with only half the amps going through the flasher. Ray Mac -
Problem with lights

No, didn't look at bulbs. Figured they all wouldn't go out at once, and thought there might be connectors apart somewhere, but I will check bulbs at daybreak. Thanks, Ray Mac -
On my "new" '88 DL 4WD, rear lights all work as they should, and so do all 4 headlights. However the hazard, parking & turn signals on the front do not work at all. Fuses are all good, and when I flip the rocker switch in top of the steering column, the tail lights go on, but not the front parking lights. Anybody have an idea what's wrong? Sorry to be on here so much as a newbie with dumb questions, but I need to get to 15 posts before I can reply individually to thank those who have helped my daughter & me so much. I was advised how to edit but it hasn't worked for me so far. When my daughter got her '87 wagon she was told to ALWAYS keep the revs between 3000 and 4000 RPM. When I've driven it, the tach barely shows 3000 at the speed limit and beyond (speedo shows 3000 is just under 70 mph). Is the information about RPMs right? We're after economy & not performance, but I sure don't want her to lug it & do damage. Also, would an '88 likely be geared the same? Thanks, Ray McDonald fud2468@att.net

EA81 - convert to 2 cylinder?h
fud24682000 replied to RXTurbo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
To clarify--the light plane application was of course an air-cooled VW engine cut in half. How about this--converting a 4-cyl. diesel so that 2 cylinders run on gas, 2 on diesel? Why? To give more power while accelerating, then back off on those 2 cylinders & get diesel economy from the other 2. Pardon me from getting off the Subaru track Ray Mac fud2468@att,net -
EA81 - convert to 2 cylinder?h
fud24682000 replied to RXTurbo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Years ago flathead Ford V-8s were used as commercial air compressors, 4 cylinders for power & the other 4 as a compressor. Also, VW engines have been used in light aircraft with 2 cylinders hacked off. -
Is this a possible replacement for my daughter's tired '87 wagon? A 1988 DL 5-speed wagon with push-button 4WD, but not dual range. 155K miles, owner claims it has been regularly maintained, body is straight, it has new Goodyear M&S tires, new front wheel bearings, new plugs, rotor & cap, and tuneup. He claims he's never been off paved roads with it, and that the 4WD has only been used for trips in snow. I assume it's a Califonia vehicle, so should not have major rust problems. I have not seen it yet, will see it tomorrow (Sunday). Does this sound OK, and what else should I look for or ask about? Also, what's a fair price to pay? Thanks again, Ray McDonald fud2468@att.net

Both my daughter and I were on here the last couple of days about her tired 4WD. I asked about this yesterday but got no replies. I feel I need to help get her into something she can depend on, even if she gets a fix for her current problem. We will probably need to get something newer. My question is, what's newer that is likely to be reliable? Legacy or? Thanks, Ray McDonald. PS --I don't know how to change my location on the list. I hit the wong button, I guess. It's California, not Connecticut.

I'm starting a new thread, even though both my daughter and I are still getting replies to the threads each of us started today regarding her ailing wagon. Because it is tired, we are going to have to locate another 4WD vehicle for her before long, even if we may get her '87 running better for a while. If we stick with a Subaru, it would be great to have another one identical to hers. But while we are in California and don't have to deal with rust and road salt, it would be hard to find one that old that's also not beaten to death. We may have to go to something newer. but I understand newer models have electric 4WD that's more trouble-prone. BTW, to me the dual range is not needed, though I have not discussed that with her. In driving her '87 to her place, I used low range on her advice but then found 1st too low & liable to spin wheels, while 2nd in low range was too tall a gear and lugged the engine. Thanks to all who have given us such great advice. Special greetings to ANZACs, especially to Canadians, my father came from Ontario. Ray McDonald fud2468@att.net

Hi, am new to this site and was encouraged to introduce myself. I'm a VERY senior citizen I live in N. California near Sacramento. I have no need for 4WD where I am, but my daughter does. She lives 120 miles from me in the foothills of the Sierras at 2000 ft. elevation on a steep dirt road. On that part of her trip home she needs 4WD all year round, and of course more so in winter. Her boy friend died of cancer recently and left her his 1987 4WD dual-range wagon. It was already pretty tired, and now is giving her starting and running problems, very difficult for her since she also has medical issues, has to make frequent doctor visits, and is stuck at home right now. I will try to get up there to help her, but can't do it before Monday, and in the meantime I'm trying to get all the information I can in order to help her. From what I've read on here, it sounds like she must have FI, not a carb, and to begin with I need to at least take a fuel filter up to install. I have told her to join the group as well and hope she does, so that she can directly describe her problems to you...but if she doesn't, I will get back on here and try to be more specific. Right now I see I'm out of space--thanks, Ray McDonald fud2468@att.net
