  1. Just remembered--flipping differential would only work with a RWD, not with transaxle. Duhhhhh---- Ray Mac.
  2. Thanks, guys. I looked at the online FSM and have ordered the Haynes book from Amazon, so should be covered now. Ray Mac.
  3. After being stuck trying to locate the right connectors to pull codes on 1987 wagon with SPFI, I need something better than the Chilton book. Will the Haynes book help, or do I need a shop manual to get better information? Also, apparently there are different shop manuals for different Subaru components according to what I've found out so far. If Haynes won't help, how do I know which shop manual to get, and where's the best site to order it from? Ray Mac
  4. Maybe just turn the differential upside down. In the 1930's Chrysler products it was easy to goof up and install upside down. Viola! 1 speed forward, 3 speeds in reverse. Ray Mac.
  5. WAWalker, can you clarify? I have ticking lifters on an '87 EA82 wagon. Oil pressure shows 45 lb. at 3000 rpm. Is it possible to have that much pressure showing and still have air in the HLA's? Ray Mac, AKA fud.
  6. Nope--I went out after it got dark, and with flashlight and mirror I could see under the dash quite well. All I located was another loose connector, white color. Ray Mcd.
  7. Well I'll try again under the dash, though there's nothing else just dangling there. A bunch of wires are coiled up under there that I didn't want to untangle for fear I would disconnect something else and maybe the connectors are hidden in them. thanks again. Ray McD.
  8. OK, thanks. From the info I had, the code connectors were supposed to be under the steering wheel, not under the hood. Just looked under the hood. By the driver's side strut tower I found one white circular loose connector, a black one and a brown one, but again, none fit together.
  9. 1987 GL 4WD, D/R with SPFI. I can't find what's supposed to plug into what to pull codes. Under the steering wheel I have found 4 loose connectors-- a blue connector with one terminal, a brown one with 2 terminals, a green one with 4 terminals and an orange one with 4 terminals, but none appear to fit into any of the others. It seems that with all the info I've gotten from this site and elsewhere I'm still missing something basic--unless the person who worked on this car previously did not disconnect other plugs after trying to pull codes!
  10. OK, thanks again. I'll go out and look some more for the ECU. Bubonik, do a search on here for the pulling codes post I put on here a while back. One of the replies gave a link to the codes, which is great. Only thing is, it doesn't tell where to find the blinking light.
  11. Well that's part of it--is it the CEL that will blink, or something else? I don't know what component to look for with another light on it. I haven't located anything else that has an LED on it.
  12. I now have my hands on my daughter's '87 4WD SPFI wagon to troubleshoot. Doing an oil change and a Wix filter helped with the valve clatter, but now I can hear intermittent clanking at idle and deceleration which sounds major-despite this, I want to pull codes first. I printed out the code info both from a link on this site and from the subaru_18 site. That site shows where the ECU and oxygen monitor are supposed to be , under the steering column, and I have a Chilton book , which is no help, but I don't know what these components are supposed to look like, so can't find them. Besides the CEL, is there another light on one of these components that blinks to flash the codes? Finally, I found a bunch of loose connectors under the hood near the dash, on driver's side, but no two of them seem to plug into each other. Somebody told me these were "for smog" but that's no help either. Ray Mac
  13. Your English is very good, but others who are experts may post here to ask more questions. Zum beispiel, when you say "no load", do you mean neutral? I have a similar problem with clanking noises at idle speed and deceleration with a 1987 DL, so maybe we can both get help!
  14. I talked to a guy the other day who had a Kubelwagen replica on a VW beetle chassis. It looked neat, but when I tried a Google search, I couldn't find a price or very many details. Anybody have a good link where I could get more information? Thanks, Ray Mac
  15. I posted another reply but it apparently didn't go through. I never paid attention to what pug wheels were before now, now I know what it means! Strange that French wheels fit and other Japanese won't. Ray Mac.
  16. Does anyone know if wheels from other imports will fit a 1987 Gl wagon with 4WD? I don't want to go bigger, just have a chance to pull some wheels from a wrecking yard that has other imports but not Subs (I'm a friend of the yard owner & he will give me a good price).
  17. OK, thanks to all for your suggestions. Ray Mac.
  18. Hi, Still trying to find right RPM"s & gears for best economy on '88 DL wagon with SPFI & 4WD, no tach. In the old days I used a vacuum gage with carbed vehicles. Can this be done with SPFI, and if so, where would I tap in? Thanks, Ray Mac.
  19. My daughter and I were both on here a couple of months ago about problems with her 1987 GL, 4WD D/R with SPFI. Someone said in a reply that all the California '87's had SPFI. Ray Mac
  20. OK, thanks. This brings me a lot closer to what I need.
  21. 1987 GL wagon, 4WD, SPFI. Both my daughter and I were on here a couple of weeks ago to try to get some advice about her engine problems. She got the distributor replaced (including ignition module) and it's running better, though check engine light is still on. I have gone through past posts very carefully and have a Chilton book, but so far, no information I can use about pulling codes. The sticky which apparently covers this is illegible on my computer. My only prior code-pulling experience is on 80's GMs, where you connect A and B terminals and count flashes. Is there something similar with early Subs? Also, is there an OBD-I checker we could buy that will work on Subaru, which has instructions and will give us a list of codes specific to Subaru to try to access?
  22. Thanks again. Am leaving now to go to Oroville, CA and will hit several yards on the way, give them the numbers I have, and see what I can find on the way. Ray Mac
  23. Thanks. No, I told the parts man it was FI, and he still said there were 2 listed for it Ray Mac
  24. Today I hope to take the '88 I just got up to my daughter, and I want to drive her '87 back. not an even trade, but that's how it is. A neighbor of hers has the '87 distributor out, and says the ignition module is shot, and there is play in it as well. The numbers on the distributor are 22100AA053 D4P84-03 Autozone wants $200, which is why I will look for one at the wrecker, but I'm told there are two distributors listed for '87 N/A SPFI 5-speed. Can I just try to find one at the wrecker that has matching numbers and hope it will work? Thanks, Ray Mac
