  1. Wow, all right, that's what I wanted to hear! Thanks everybody. You really don't need to vacuum the system? Is there something particular about these cars that makes it unnecessary?
  2. Looks like my A/C compressor is toast. It makes a terrible grinding/growling noise when I turn on the A/C. Took the belt off and the clutch spins freely but the main bit turns roughly, like it's catching on spots. Idler pulley doesn't feel great, but spins freely and doesn't feel like it's near seizing. I've read that once a compressor bearing goes bad, all kinds of metal debris can be introduced into the system, thus the need for a flush before the new compressor is installed. Is this really necessary? I don't think I can do the flush myself--looks like you need compressed air and I don't have that. I was hoping to just toss in another compressor and charge it with a can from the store. Is it necessary to replace anything else like the condenser or drier?
  3. wtdash - or anyone else who has done this work around: which is the IAC hose that needs to be T'd into? I plan on using my EJ18 EGR intake on the non-EGR EJ22 that is about to go in. The IACV looks a bit different on the EJ18 and from wtdash's write-up I can't quite tell what to T into:
  4. Seems like the only way to at least eliminate the computer as the problem is to try one out of a 93-95 impreza with manual trans. although I'd definitely try a computer from a manual first gen legacy if I got my hands on one. will have to see what I can dig up at the JY
  5. Yeah I've installed the whole system, but I guess there's always the possibility that I got a bad actuator or switch or something. These were all junkyard parts...So what I'm hearing is that I really should get a computer from a 93-95 impreza with a manual transmission, is that right? It couldn't be from a 95 legacy with a manual transmission? Aren't those both the 5MT?
  6. I have a 95 Impreza L wagon that I have added cruise control to. It's an EJ18/5spd. But I haven't been able to get it to work and I'm not really sure where to start. I was wondering if anyone can tell me if the cruise computer is specific to the model and/or trans (manual vs auto). I have tried a couple different computers. With the first one, I would press the cruise button on the dash and the orange light would turn on, but no response when trying to actually set the cruise. I tried another computer, and the orange light wouldn't even turn on. Is it possible I have the wrong computer?
  7. I have a 95 Impreza L wagon with a power steering whine. Fluid level is normal. The noise seems to be related to engine speed. At idle the noise is unnoticeable but above 1.5k or so the whine is pretty substantial. Any ideas on what I should start looking at?
  8. OK great, thanks guys. My car already has stock WRX wheels so I'm good there. and yeah, I'm talking about rear brakes only.
  9. I've searched and can't find a clear answer on this. I want to do a rear disc conversion on my 95 L wagon and one guide I read says that anything up to 2001 will work, whereas I've seen other people using WRX brakes in the back. There's a guy selling everything I need off a 2002 WRX, including the parking brake cables, which is one of my questions. First, will these knuckles bolt up on my car? Second, will the parking brake cables be of appropriate length?
  10. A couple months ago I had trouble getting a vehicle to pass emissions and I used the CRC "guaranteed to pass" stuff that is available at most auto parts stores. I also dumped in a couple bottles of Heet fuel line antifreeze, since I read that works well too. Not sure if all that was overkill, but I definitely passed that time!
  11. No, I ended up finding it in the giant pile of parts sitting in the back seat.
  12. Just a note for anyone who might come across this situation in the future, the tip about timing was right on the money and I couldn't have gotten it running without Gloyale's advice. I had a no start for three days. I had spark and fuel so I was sure it was timing and I redid the timing belts to no avail. Then I remembered this advice and tried putting the distributor in at about 20 degrees after TDC. Had to redo it a couple times to get it right on but now it runs great. With timing set at 0 TDC I could not even get a sputter.
  13. I ended up figuring it out. It is the solenoid valve that hooks up to the throttle body and EGR valve.
  14. EA82- Can anyone tell me what this plugs into? Somewhere close to the thermostat housing...thanks.
  15. I have a carbed ea82 that I want to put into my 89 wagon. From my research it's my understanding that my spfi intake will bolt on and I just need to plug the EGR ports down by the exhaust ports. I see the carbed engine has slightly lower compression but not enough to make much of a difference. So that is all OK but then I read this thread on nasioc: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1286747 This guy toward the bottom insists that the cams are different enough to cause problems. Do I need to swap in my old cams or should I just toss it in as is?
  16. Those are good pics but they don't show the part I need to see, the end of the cable just underneath where the clutch cable attaches to the clutch fork
  17. Putting a few things back together and I cant remember the sequence of all the little fittings and fasteners on the hill holder cable. Could someone grab a closeup pic of that assembly so I can get it back together? Thanks in advance!
  18. Ok, got the answer to that question. Did some more reading and found that the work would be similar to an EJ swap so now I am leaning toward swapping the SPFI heads onto the new block and going from there. Can this be done with the engine in the car? Just dropped it in on Sunday and now I find this out.
  19. The heads are definitely mpfi. Dual ports, so yeah my old intake will not work. I looked in one of the spark plug holes and the pistons are the regular non-turbo pistons. Reason for swapping the engine is it had no oil pressure and sounded like it had piston slap. Then the clutch fork went so I figured I'd do it all at once. If I get an mpfi intake are there any issues with hooking it up to my existing harness and plumbing?
  20. oh this is just beginning to get interesting, isn't it...I was planning on just bolting on my old intake (SPFI). is that not going to work?
  21. Swapping a used ea82 into my 89 GL. Came with no intake, PO said it was carbed. All the pulleys on my old one were for V belts but the new one has pulleys for the flat, grooved style belts. I would just swap all the old pulleys onto the new engine but the old crank pulley is stuck on (I tried a 5 foot cheater pipe) and it got cracked somewhere along the way anyway. Now I will also need a alternator pulley for the flat belt since the new engine came with no alternator. I've looked on rock auto and every application I looked at between 1985 and 1994 uses a V belt. So what year/model used a flat belt? Would I just be better off getting a new crank pulley and swapping the old pulleys onto the new engine? Either way I have to hunt down a pulley, although I'm guessing the V belt crank pulley will be easier to find than the flat belt alternator pulley.
  22. I have another question about this job, figured I'd post in here again. I see a lot of people saying that they leave the t-belt covers off with no problems, and I was wondering if this is still going to be OK for a wagon that's going to see a lot of snowy and icy conditions.
