  1. I am working on A 1989 GL wagon that has an EA82 with tuned port injection. The fuel pressure regulator has A vacuum hose that comes off of the back of the throttle body plate, IT HAS NO VACCUM ! I have taken the throttlebody off and cleaned it. While having it off, I focused on the vacuum tubes by cleaning, push wire all the way thru, and hit them with compressed air. The rear vacuum tube for the regulator still has no vacuum, and I pushed A wire thru the port and it came out on the inside bore of the throttlebody with no obstuction. What have I done wrong?:-\
  2. Thanks, I'll check them out. After seeing your suggestion for delta cams, it rang A bell in my head that I have seen others mention delta cams.
  3. I bet that brat is awsome to drive. Do you know what kind of power its making? Is it lifted or stock height?
  4. Thanks Guys, keep the advice coming. I want to build it naturally aspirated first. I can always put A turbo on later. I would like to have cams that produce more torque. Anybody got any suggestions?
  5. I have put A turbo on my list of considerations. I have A 1989 EA82 turbo car that is complete, meaning its A good running car that is rusted down. I was wondering if the turbo set-up would interchange with my 2.2l. I like the idea of 30+HP on tap!
  6. Good eye 6-star, I jumped over to ebay and sure enough, A used one, just like it, had A buy it now price of 94$. I also seen A new one with red stiching and black spokes for 225$. When I have that kind of money for A steering wheel, I'm going to get A Sparco Silverstone. Until then I would like to find A blue 4 spoke steering wheel from the early 80's that is NOS or mint condition.
  7. I like the steering wheel with the red subaru horn button in it, and the designer signature is cool. What brand of wheel is it? Do you have them or are those pictures you found? Thanks for the correction on the Loyale. I'll take three please! The wiper on the sedan is just co cool.
  8. Wowwywow! You guys have the gears in my my brain going wide open! And I love it. This is the kind of response I was hoping for. The reason for rebuilding, or I should say building the motor is because I want to get its full potential. I enjoy building motors, its just plain ole fun to see what I can acheive by putting A little bit here and A little bit there, and A lot over there. I want to use everyones experience, so I am not disapointed with the outcome. I have built truck loads of V8's, and always researched the heck out of building dependable power and applied it to the build with A mostly successful outcome. The Boxer is A totally different animal. I know A lot of general things apply to building all engines, but I'm looking for the subaru guru's that know, what they suggest works, from actually doing it, to A 2.2l. It already appears that I have the wrong year to start with. It can be corrected some how. Thats why I want ya'lls input.
  9. WOW! Loyale 2.7 turbo, That black Legacy turbo in the first picture is absolutely awesome! I would love to have that in my garage. The black one is killer. I'll take two please!
  10. I hear-ya McBrat! I thought I had looked At the brochure pages close, but I keep missing things. I will have to look at them again and refresh my mind. As far as how high it rises up, I'll have to test fit it, like you said. If it is too short, I have A friend that is A top notch welder and he could extend it, before I have it rechromed. That is one accessory I want for function.
  11. I have A multi meter and A haynes and chiltons manual. I looked really close at the wires and they appear to be intact but they could easily be broken, as small as they are. I unlatced the lid to the air-filter box and blew(by mouth) in the hole that houses the MAS wires. I was some distance from the hole. I lifted the air filter lid,and air tube with it still attatched to the throttle body. With the engine running and blowing towards the MAS, the engine would almost die every time. I will try to find A positive way to check it in my manuals.
  12. That is good information. I sprayed the MAS off several times and soaked it every time I sprayed it. I also used compressed air on it before the MAS spray cleaner could dry. I am A clean freak when I do any type of motor work and usually go one step beyond clean. I am A carburetor guy mostly, and was always told clean, clean, clean. As far as fuel injection goes, I know some basics, but I am mostly in the dark. I read what I can And ask A lot of questions. There is no stupid question in my book, we have to learn somehow! Can the MAS be tested with positive results,(GOOD or BAD).
  13. I have A 1985 EA81 hatchback that I am putting A EJ22 in. The donor car is A 1990 legacy, naturally asperated 2.2l. I plan to totally rebuild the motor, and plan to get as much dependable power out of it as possible. I am going for the most torque I can obtain because I am going to lift it 3-4 inches and of course bigger wheels and tires. Simply put: What kind of TORQUE numbers, and HORSEPOWER numbers can I get out of A 2.2l and maintain that "good ole Subaru dependability".
  14. I here-ya man! That looks great. It makes me even more anxious to renew mine. That is exactly like the one I have. Does it mount at A comfortable height? I am 6'1, and was hoping it would be what it is supposed to be, A armrest. It looks cool, and your mom did A great job of covering it. I wonder how rare they are? Yours is the only one I have seen in A subby, and I have looked at A lot of pictures and junkyard cars. I found mine laying in the back of A roached-out hatchback and I grabbed it and brought it home, not knowing exactly how it mounted. At first I thought it was something homemade but soon figured it out. Do you know much about how Subaru offered them?
  15. YES, thats it McBrat! I would love to have A NOS winch kit, just like it. Just think, somewhere out there, A brand new one is laying in A box, in someones garage, and they could care less about it! I found A factory armrest, that mounts to the seatbelt bolts. The padding on top is in bad shape, and the chrome bars that it is built with are A little rusty. I am going to have the mounting bars re-chromed and make A new pad but I bet those armrests are rare.
  16. YES! Loyale 2.7 turbo, that is it. Great picture,as well! I would like to get my hands on one. Maybe superwinch still offers something close to that, But I am A original freek. Do you know of one forsale?
  17. Let me first say how glad I am to get this response to such A "Headscratcher". I did clean the MAS, and I did use CRC Mass Air Cleaner. I actually blew accross the MAS elements with the car running and the engine almost died every time I blew on it. I have had A check engine light on from the day I brought it home. Its giving A EGR code. I have changed fuel filters twice. The air filter is getting plenty of air. The cad. converter seems to be letting plenty air out the exhaust and hasn't been getting hot. Keep throwing ideas and advice. Thanks!
  18. What brand winch is it? I was pretty sure it was not A warn. Do you have any pictures of it, how many pounds is it rated at, and how much money is the right price? Thanks, Kelly
  19. I have checked the cams, many times actually. So many times, Me and my helper nicknamed the cam marks on the flywheel the three musketeers. I will have to figure out A way to monitor the fuel pressure while driving/under power. Thanks
  20. Yes, I connected the green wires and set the timing on 20 degrees. I unplugged the green wires and held the timing light on the marks as I revved the motor and it did advance accordingly.
  21. I seen A winch for sale on one of the sites. It had subaru instructions for installation, and from the pictures on the instructions, the winch was A real factory accessory. It was yellow and had an install kit. I didn't have the money to buy it then but I do now. It was all brand new! Anybody got one for sale????
  22. I got the old gas out(as much as I could) and its had at least two fresh tanks run thru it since I got the old out. I also put another NEW fuel filter on it, even though I changed it in the beginning.
  23. I was hoping that some of the EA82 stuff would work because I have it all. Its my luck that it won't and I do want it to bolt right up. I know where to buy A 1984 2WD wagon that has every option available on A EA81, including power-steering. I guess i'll have to pick it up. This car even has A digital dash and its not A turbo. I do beleive the only things it doesn't have is 4WD and turbo.
  24. Hey Subaru Guru's, I have been working on A 120,000 mile 1989 GL wagon that has A T.P.I. EA82 motor. I was given the car about 2 years ago to settle A debt. I drove the car about 20 miles of fourlane to my home, which had many hills to climb, and the car ran great with plenty of power. I parked the car when I got home and would start it up about once A month or so, just for circulation. I decided about A month ago to get tags, insurance and start driving it but first I wanted to make it safe and dependable by super-tuning it up. I am the type of mechanic that takes meticulous to A whole new level. Heres A list of things I did in no exact order: New timing belts, tentioners, and idler Rebuilt oil pump New water pump New alternator New distributer cap and rotor button New spark plug wires (NGK) and plugs (E3's) New PCV New fuel and air filters New EGR valve New vacuum lines New fuel hose Removed the throttle body and cleaned it Cleaned mass-air sensor Set ignition timing to 20 degrees I am sure I am forgetting something! But, it went from having good power two years ago when parked it, to A car that will barely do 55 MPH on flat ground with A major tuneup, It has no power at all. Heres A list of test I performed, using A Haynes and Chiltons manuals for the settings and values that the car should have if it was running properly. Fuel pressure test: Tested pressure to throttle-body and pressure on return line to tank and leak-down pressure with engine and pump turned off. THe pressure were all within the range of specifications. Tested fuel pump pressure at the pump and was within the specs given. Checked vacuum pressure and it had 20lbs at idle. The only thing I have found to not be performing as it should was the vacuum port on the back of the throttle-body that feeds the fuel pressure regulator. The port has no vacuum under any conditions( idle,half-throttle,or wide open) So I found another timed vacuum port (front of throttle-body)and ran A vacuum line to the regulator and tested the regulators function, and it seems to be working as it should. As I said before, the vacuum port that is supposed to be connected to the fuel pressure regulator has no vacuum, but I don't know if it did, or didn't have vacuum when it ran good so I don't know if this is were the problem is or isn't. I have read other posts on Subaru forums that someone had the same engine setup as mine with no vacuum,at any RPM, on the same vacuum port that feeds the fuel pressure regulator. Nobody gave A reason or solution to the absense of vacumm. I took my throttle-body back off and made sure the vacuum port was clear and clean. It was perfectly clean, I even put A wire thru it, to check for obstruction and it was fine. I still don't understand why there is no vacuum on that port, but I did get vacuum to the regulator from another port. According to the test explained in the haynes manual the fuel pressure regulator is doing its job. Another thing I should mention, I used my timing light to see if the ignition is advancing with the RPM's. It is advancing, and I am making sure the green wires are unplugged fo normal operation and I plugged them in to set the timing. Please forgive the misspelled words and punctuation mistakes. I am at A total loss of direction and hope someone knows whats wrong,so please HHEELLPP!!
  25. Hey, all of you Subaru Guru's, I need some help with A big job I am starting soon. Hopefully some of you have learned from experience and have good advice. I have A 1985 EA81 hatchback that I want to put power steering on. The car currently has manual steering and I need A list of parts to gather before starting the job. I have A 1989 EA82 GL Wagon, that has power steering on it from factory and was wondering if it has any parts I can use for the upgrade, it would certainly help in cost because it is A whole car for parts. Thanks!
