  1. well I just had the mighty ea82 down too the short block new gaskets and seals but its still consuming a lot of oil. rear hatch is speckled with soot. with the heads off I did the valve seals but cheeped out on doing the guides. the guides felt ok but one exhaust valve was a bit tight. I used my thumbs of steel to seat the valve seals and used the little plastic sleeve when installing and used lots of lube. could I have not seated the valve stem seals all the way ? could the guides be so worn that new seals would not have helped ? or could it be the rings? there was a small step on the top of the bore ... ea82 consuming about 1L for every 400 km
  2. drive shaft two piece. trans to steady bearing. steady bearing to diff .
  3. well I ran the car 100km today and a momentary sw is not the way to go. 5-10min @ 80k+ and the light comes on. I stopped a few times cleared and tried to keep the light out but no joy. as im concerned about jumping I will stick in a toggle sw just in case the comp wants an open signal at any point.
  4. x2 on fix the wires. i broke a nipple off the 4wd disengage solenoid and ended up swapping in a 5spd DR because the only vacuum solenoid I could find was over $400 used on epay. you could switch 4wd on and off with a vacuum source I did it for a wile but no fun to stop and pop hood to shift... could have run lines in to the cab but good excuse to swap in a dual range
  5. the action happens behind the drivers side strut tower. there will be two vacuum solenoids.
  6. all right I just completed a 5spd dual range swap in my 90 loyale. drove the car around for a couple days and all was good. then the check engine lite came on.....code 51 neutral safety sw. so im sitting in the Datsaru reading the book it gets chilly I warm the car up then start counting the flashes..... car gets cold.... go to start.... wont turn over. pull the ns sw off the push button trans plug it in to the harness (no provision on trans). key on,. push ns sw, clutch in and she starts..... do I mount a momentary sw on the dash connected to the ns feed and hit it every now and then or do I jump the pins and leave it connected ?
  7. ah.. its installed and shifting good. thanks for the help and thankfully it was 3.90s . but I forgot to save the horseshoe that supports the front of the center console. I will bend up a new bracket or bridge the gap with some abs. what have others done ?
  8. well too late for for that, trans is in the car guess ill find out when I throw the leaver. if all DL's and GL's had 3.90s I should be ok.....

well the ea82 is back together. I primed the oil pump before installing the heads to pump out any contaminants. then primed it with the cam housings on. passenger side oil spilled out the cam then the spray bar and the drivers side the oil oozed from the spray bar but not the cam......... turned the cam 180 then oil came out the cam.. is there only a partial grove on the cam tower ?
  10. I could use some help identifying a dual range transmission. i see talk about 3.7s and 3.9s and want to make sure the trans has a matching gear set to the diff in the back of my 90 loyale with 3.90s. i have two dual ranges that have been kicking around for over a decade and couldn't begin to say what they were pulled from. but they still have stickers 757751 753492

got a oem replacement muffler for $60ca at the local parts store. then welded up a hole under a heat shield on the passenger side of Y. with the exhaust all quiet the words of an old Subaru mechanic filled my ear hole : "never fix a subaru's leaky exhaust you will only notice the other problems". well after two weeks of commuting i get a call ........"hey the cars making this Honorable ticking noise " ..... .........pulled cleaned and decoked. did the valve seals and oil pump rubbers. soaked and pumped hla's. waiting on oil pan gasket set and cleaning up a dr trans to swap in. is there other things that I should do ? file or drill cooling or oil passages ? stretch or shim springs ?

around the time of the headlight conversion, i took my transfer pump with a few gallons of 80/90w in the bucket to a buddy's house . i placed the transfer pump in a milk crate and bungeed it in the back of the datsaru..... well the top heavy bucket jumped out of the milk crate on a fun corner, spilling the gear oil all over the cargo area. 45min of hwy driving and I make it home to clean up the mess. I pulled the carpet, tossed it in a bucket to soak. scrubbed the floors....... I thought it was good. within a week of baking in the sun the oil went rancid. even with the window down I could only make it a few miles before feeling sick. so I parked it and used it to store datsun door cards. I started her a few times over the years and scrubbed off the green when too unsightly. dropped in a new battery last week sat inside were I was met with the smell of datsun jute and vinyl, turned the key and nothing but joy., didn't miss a beat! cleaned out the all the parts and gave her a good detailing... man the uv that crept through the cracks did some damage. proud of a job well done I called it a night ....... the next day when I opened the door I was met by the familiar smell of rancid gear oil. out with a air chisel did the under lay fly and much and more cleaning was needed for this here ride then I did lower ball joints front wheel bearings pads, brake fluid suck and flush. insured it and drove off 150km of 5 year old gas... granted it was 94 with some seafoam. did the fuel filter and sent the woman out on her 50km commute. im here writing this so it wasn't that bad. next on the list is exhaust and to find a fix for the buzzing 4wd sw ?

I never would have thought a bad fan sw would lead to a head light swap. in prepping my 91 loyale for winter i noticed the fan failed to kick in. i jumped power to the fan and it worked so the problem was the thermo sw. i had just changed the coolant:banghead: being lazy i thought i would wire in a push fan from a xj6 that i ran in my 86gl. the xj6 fan fits great but interferes with the grill. i had a datsun 510 grill hanging around and it fit nicely between the stock lights. a buddy came by and saw what i was doing. he said why don't you stick the datsun lights in while your at it. hating the candles in jam jars that pass for head lights on the loyale i thought i would give it a try and see how they fit. the width was perfect now the fun part how to mount them? being a 510 guy i have lots of spares kicking around and i took a complete rad support and with a couple of cuts i had mounts for the light buckets. it took a little bending and some nylon spacers to get the hood to close and the lights to stop pointing at the sky. the hardest part was figuring out how to wire it all up. I ran leads from the stock light sockets to relays and they work like stock. if captain hindsight was around he would have let me know that it's much faster and easier to swap the fan switch. now what do i do with all the spare suby headlights and my stone guards from AU
  20. well actually she was a 86 GL camo goon that lived with the TOD for over a 100,000k befor she was too rotted to drive. her rust ran from the brake master to the seat riser. the sub frame had rotted away to nothing and one day the windshield split after getting some air on a rail xing. if i put a jack on the rocker I could make the crack grow. she was so ruff that a friend entered it in a radio contest "crush my beater" on the fox and she made it into the top three. thankfully she didn't win and i was able to salvage some parts before i sent her to the great rolling dyno in the sky
  21. the wait is over and i can finally post hi im Robyn from Vancouver BC I've been a subaru fan for ten years since i bought my first gl goon. this last fall as i was prepping my 91 loyale for a hopefully snow filled winter and i decided to do something about the poor lighting on the goon. being a datsun guy and frustrated with my own kind eating up all the LSD. i decided to fight back and started installing datsun parts on my subaru welcome to datsaru i would like to upgrade to 15s add a 2" lift plus swap in one of the dual range tranys i have from subaru's past. for now i will put on my winter 185/80r13 boots and hit the FSR's in search of snow cheers
