I have an 87 subaru GL 1.8 liter non turbo 4wheel drive. I have a coolant leak that appears to be internal because I never see any coolant leaking from the engine or steaming out but after about 50 miles it starts to heat up and when I fill it up it is obvious it is low. The car is running decent, it is definately underpowered at low rpm's but it has its good old kick once it starts getting up to about 3.5 rpms. I recently had oil burning out my exhaust but that problem is gone, now it would seem that coolant is coming out the exhaust. I can deal with this leak until snowboard season but by then it must be fixed. Thank You kindly for your time. JOe

Now Im confused, leaking water pump
Joey Joe replied to Joey Joe's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The water is pouring out of a hole that is directly on the bottom of the pump, I am getting a new pump, but what is that hole and its purpose, I thought it was probably a biol over?run off valve or somthin. -
Now Im confused, leaking water pump

I did that, there was some slight gasket marks left behind but I did put ultra blue gasket sealant on all the screw holes. -
I pulld the water pump and It looked fine, except that one of the bottom screw holes was slightly erouding so I filled it up with a utlra blue and put a new gasket. Started it up and now It leaks even faster directly under the water pump. Does this pretty much mean I need a new water pump, or could it be something else? such as a problem with the block side of the waterpump? Thank you

Thank for the help, the pump will be all finished tomarrow, can't wait to drive that shet

If I use the engine to get the bolt off, how will I get it back on, cuz the engine only turns one way
-
That is good news, But I can't get that one screw off that is being blocked by the crank case, Do I even need to get it off? And if I do can I take the belt "holder disk" off, I couldn;t figure out how. thank you

I am seeing now that this is a bigger job than I thought is to be, I would be greatly helped by a general step by step. Am I going to have to drain the oil and pull the crank cover, that is what I dreading mostly. Thanks from a poor bastard who cant afford a mechanic, luckily this is kind of fun.

I have an 87 gl 1.8 L fi. there seems to be five bolts holding the water pump in, three on the top that are only connecting the waterpump and two on the bottom, one holding the timing belt cover and another I belive the crank case cover as well as the water pump. Do I have to take the covers off the timing belt and crank case or will the water pump slide out once the two bottom screws are unattached.

I recently fixed an oil leak in my subaru, after about a month of it sitting, and came to find that in the down time a huge leak has formed from directly under the water pump. It is coming out right under the water pipe slanting down from the drivers side, I am assuming it is just a seal that needs to be fixed but was wondering if the gasket in a tube will work.

Here comes a ********************* question. I need help finding the pcv valve, I have a fuel injected 87 1.8 L GL. If anyone could tell me how to locate it I would be thankful.

I have thought of a few more things to add that I didn't before. There is oil in the air filter, a good ammount. This leak happened in one instant and never leaked close to this much at all. The spark plugs were not fouled up with oil, but were with gas, due to my brother trying to move it when I had fuses out, luckily there was oil in it when he did this. ALso where is the PCV valve located, I have never worked on foreign engines, mostly just international trucks.
-
PCV valve eh, That is on the top of my list for things to try. Would anyone suggest having the car professionally dianosed before I dig into it. Also if there are any other ideas I would love to hear becuase I am going to start goin into it soon.

I have an 87 subaru GL 1.8L all wheel drive, manual. The car has 140,000 miles and ran like a champ. I was driving on the free way when the car suddenly lost power, I could barely make it up hills, and oil pressure. I put more oil in and made it home. The car will expundge all of the oil out through the exhaust in a matter of minutes, maybe 10. It runs almost perfect when it is full of oil. I have been told by some that this means there is probably a crack in the head gaskets or blown rings. I am going to tear into it and try and find the exact problem before I part with her. If anyone could refer me to a post that explains what I will be getting myself into or give me the run down themselves it would be appreciated.

It is not a turbo. I will be replacing all those seals you said in time, unfortuantely I wont be able to get started for 2 weeks due to a broken wrist. Thank you for the help and I will let everyone know what I find out when I rip into her.

I was out there trying to find the leak and there was definately no trail of oil going to the catyltic converter but it smokes like a campfire. I took a cloth on every path the oil could take to get to my exhaust but there was definately no trail, it wasn't even damp anywhere. When I accelerate under load it shoots more smoke out the back than I have ever seen come out of a car, maybe a 30 foot cloud of smoke comes out.

My 87 GL costs more in oil to drive than gas. It is somehow leaking onto the catalidic converter and burning off at an incredible rate. I am unable to see a trail of oil leaking to it and was hoping someone could give me some hints as to where to begin. I am a decent car repairsmen when I know what is wrong with the car but am not good at diagnosing. Thank you for your time.
