  1. Bad idea! Put a block under the pedal so that it can be pushed only about half way down, as normal braking action does. Otherwise, you could damage your master cylinder.
  2. Wait till you find one that you can inspect and test drive. It pays to be patient...
  3. I just did my oil change. My car's capacity is 4.2 liters, but I put in 4.4. So I just unscrewed the drain plug almost completely and let it slowly drain until I estimated the right amount was drained. I rechecked the level and voilà!
  4. I just did mine a few days ago and it was very easy indeed, using the starter. I put a 22mm socket on a half inch drive to which I added a 2' extension pipe which rested on the driver's side area ahead of the battery -IIRC. Just 2 short bursts did it! My car is a bit different from yours, but I am sure you'll find a solid place for the pipe to rest before cranking. However to tighten it back to 130 ft/lbs, you'll need to know ahead of time what you'll be using. In my case, a home made pry bar in a flywheel tooth did the job. Good luck! P.S. Don't forget to disconnect the spark plugs first. You don't actually want the engine to start!
  5. After doing some research, I realize that the calibration must have already been off anyway. Indeed, I have never put it back to zero before storing it, and that must have screwed the calibration. I'll try to find out by how much it's off, by comparing it to a known good one and decide whether or not to have it re-calibrated or buy a new one. Thanks for all your replies.
  6. I meant that a real photo would be too large (as in kilobytes) and would go beyond the size limit for avatars. BTW Jean = French for John. Probably not the kind of pic you'd want to see.
  7. It still "clicks", but I'm not sure I can still trust its accuracy. As for recalibration, it seems to be expensive - like almost the cost of a new one.
  8. Hi All: I lended my torque wrench to a friend who needed to torque her lug nuts. Unfortunately, I forgot to tell her not to use it for loosening them, which she did. They must have been about 70 to 80 lbs/ft. Has the wrench been damaged as a result? I understand that putting the dial on zero would have reduced the risk, but she didn't. TIA

  10. Pinging? Sulfur smell? Try higher octane gas, especially Sunoco 94. Obviously, there is more to it than that, but at least the pinging should stop, and who knows? ... GL
  11. I think the idea here is that he'd trust a vehicle - engine - that has proven its reliability (EJ22) better than a newer vehicle which might fail albeit new. BTW have you thought of studded tires for additional traction in snow/ice?
  12. Hello All: Great site! I just bought a 96 Impreza Outback Sport with 141K miles. It's my second car specifically for the tough Toronto winters. It's in pretty good shape and I expect (I wish I'll have) many years of trouble free motoring from it. I don't have any records of timing belt service. I understand it's supposed to be a non-interference engine (I've done some reading). What am I risking by not changing it right away? Can it be inspected to verify its condition? What else needs immediate attention in this car? TIA
