  1. The trip to Home Depot did it. Cut some sheet metal for a downspout to fit the MAF, used duct tape (until I can find something better) to attach a 3" diameter dry duct elbow, and affixed my cone filter and heat shield to that. She pulls like a dream, sounds mean, and runs smoother than before.
  2. Off the the hardware store I go. My GF is goin to think I'm bastante loco, but the feeling of cruising down an open highway at 90+ with a BMW and an Eclipse Spyder makes it worth it
  3. It looks like I'm back to plan A: fabbing something. My GF's dad jokingly suggested duct tape. Maybe I'll run by the auto parts store on Sunday... Anyone here have experience with adding a cone filter to a vane MAF?
  4. Think it would be difficult to replace the vane MF with a hot wire MAF, if I could locate a rather inexpensive one someplace? I'm sure I could have my under-the-counter mechanic fab something or other, but I'd rather do this myself.
  5. Question: My 86 XT-GL uses a vane style MAF. I just picked up a nice, large, conical air filter off eBay ($4) and a heat shield to go with it ($10). What do I need to to in order to affix the new filter to my engine, given the vane style MAF?
  6. Oh well... And yeah, once I get enough $$ to pick up a turbo from a BC/BF Legacy, it will be an XT GL Turbo
  7. I had simply been thinking of cat-back, with a high-flow cat and a new downpipe.
  8. Will this work, if the EA82 in question is an XT-GL?
  9. Enuogh money to flush my tranny, emissions, injectors, and get my NGK double plat spark plugs installed, with just enough free for a high-flow cone filter and heat shield
  10. I've noticed that sometimes my XT will feel like the throttle has cut out on me. This usually occurs when I am accelertating hard or am at higher speeds. I'm not sure how to describe it other than the gas pedal is depressed, but suddenly my engine is not providing any get-up-and-go for a while, then suddenly it cuts back on and I leap forward. Any clues?
  11. Does someone have a picture or something, because it's simply not there in my car when I look.
  12. I've looked in the "cockpit" of my car several times, and I cannot locate the trunk/fuel door lever. Where is it in relation to the hood lever, wiper selection switch, and steering wheel lift?
  13. The mystery toggle is not the wiper switch. My factory wiper switch works fine. Perhaps I was looking in the wrong place, but I couldn't find the trunk lever in my car. Under the dash, I have the steering wheel lift, the hood lever, the wiper switch. I have fore-aft and the height adjustment levers on the bottom of my seat. I couldn't find anything else.
  14. This is going to sound silly, but how does one open the fuel door on an 86 XT GL? Currently, I am manually using a key fob to open the fuel door, but it seems to have a latch that can be opened from inside the car. Unfortunately, I cannot locate the lever or button to do so. Can anyone tell me where it might be (and no, the car did not have a manual when I purchased it)? The second question is that there is some sort of toggle switch under the sterring wheel, located immedeately above the winter/summer wiper selection switch. I have no clue what this toggle could be wired to, and all my switching it back and forth hasn't seemed to affect anything that I could notice. Anyone have any clue?
  15. I absolutely adore my 86 XT GL It may not be the fastest car out there, but it certainly is nimble enough to show up the ricer kids, lol!
  16. I was considering the Weapon-R system, since they include a pre-filter in the ram funnel and place the Dragon filter at the end of the piping, inside the engine bay, along with a heat shield.
  17. I just picked up an 86 XT GL and absolutely love the car. I had a used down-pipe welded onto the exhaust yesterday so that the car would pass inspection, but am going to be having some more permanent exhaust work done in the near future. Ive orderd a 2" Ravin muffler from the local Midas which I will use to replace the stock muffler (which is a bit loud), per the reccomendation on the EA-82 performance info (Ravin has a muffler with basically the exact same numbers that SubieMech inidcated). What I want to know is should I go ahead and replace the system from the Y-pipe back with a 2" system (scrapping the cat in the Y-pipe and replacing the second cat with a 2" high flow 3-way)? Or would that not really help the car, performance wise? Also, is there any way to route a cold air intake duct to that huge open space between the radiator and the front fender of the car? I could put some mesh there and mount a cold air behind it if there was any way to run the piping from there to the filter in the engine bay.
