  1. I'd leave it as is. Rig the radiator, put a lift kit on, add some big tires, and have an offroader. Now go crash through the forest and don't worry about it.
  2. Did you look in the brochures and vintage ads that are on the home page of this site? They have all the 80's stuff. You might try there.
  3. This sound slike classic 'outta gas.' Put gas in and try it again. Is it carbed or injected? Either way, still sounds like it needs some petroleum distillate.
  4. I am interested in this one too. I don't know for sure, but I would think there would have to be a wheel sensor on the front, that feeds to the computer. When the speed of the wheel and speed of the trans don't match, it would know the front is slipping, so apply more power to the rear. I theorize this has to be controlled by the computer, and therefore would require hacking in to the code and making changes. If you cut a sensor, it would probably be 90/10 all the time because that is the default setting. The computer wouldn't get a reading from the sensor, so it wouldn't know what to do. But on the transfer case itself, there would have to be a sensor of sorts. Hmm. I don't know. Anyone else have any ideas?
  5. Those are the valve covers. It needs valve cover gaskets. The parts are cheap and it is an easy fix.
  6. I'll get some more pictures then. I might try and sell it on the Bay. I don't like having to pay seller's fees, though. That offer is mighty tempting though. Maybe I should put it in the sales forum.....
  7. I would like another Subaru, but have to sell this one first. It is an 1985 GL 2dr hatch, dual range 4wd, no a/c or p/s from factory. The body is straight and clean, the white paint still shines when waxed. It has no dents. Everything electrical works. It runs perfectly. The oil pan and pump gaskets were replaced, a new front pass. driveaxle put in, new alternator and battery, and a tune up done. It is a Hitachi carbed EA81. I had new tires put on as well. The interior vinyl is good. The dash has a crack. The seats are worn, and have seat covers. It is typical of a 20 year old Subaru interior. I am the second owner. It has 178k miles on it and is not abused in any way. I just drive it to school. It is a great winter car. I was going to ask $1000 for it, but have been told to ask everything from $500 to $1300. I hear my model and options (or lack of!) are desirable for "fun" driving and rallye work. I have pictures somewhere. Let me know what you think I could get. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2067819
  8. I have a 1361 on it now. The one I took off was a NAPA Gold, but was a different part number. NAPA says it has been replaced by the 1361. It doesn't drip as bad and fits a little better than the Fram. But it is still a smidge big. I measuresd its gasket outer diameter at 2.735" and need one that is 2.67-2.7." I don't think the oil pump was replaced because I am the second owner, and the old man that had it before rarely drove it. This is puzzling to me. But I guess a drip is better than a pour.
  9. Didn't the Aussies have a turbo hatch? I go to WWU. I have heard of that car, but haven't seen it. I'll ask around on campus when school starts up again.
  10. I have an '85 GL, 3dr Hatchback, Dual range 4wd, and 1.8l. When I bought this car a year ago it had a proper size filter. Since then I have used the 3682 from Fram, Wal-Mart, STP, etc. It is too big. The application guides say it is correct, but the diameter is a bit too big. I measured with a set of calipers, and the mounting pad on my oil pump is a smaller than the filter. The filter drips because it cannot seal. The outer half of the gasket does not even make contact. The oil pump does not leak. I replaced all the seals on it. It is nice and dry. I compared the first filter I took off to the PH3682 type, and it is noticeable smaller in gasket diameter. That old filter is no longer made, and says it has been replaced by the 3682. I have tried different brands. It is not overtightened or too loose. Does anyone else have this problem? I need a master catalog to find my filter by size, not what the company says should fit. Anyone have a link to a catalog like this? I had a catalog like this once but it seems to have gone missing. Thanks for your help.
  11. Thanks. I didn't see anything Weber on it. So I know it ain't a Weber. I never have had a 4wd. I moved to WA from down South. Straight line cars with big power were the norm for where I lived. I don't see a modified Stang in the snow or wet roads for that matter.
  12. I have a 4spd with a lever for 4wd that says hi and lo. Is this considered the dual range trans? There is some Subaru specific stuff I don't know.
  13. I have a '85 4wd 2d hatch. Its got a EA81. I was told they put three different carbs on these things. I can't find any marks on the carb itself. I have found this little car to be a lot of fun. It is so damn easy to work on compared the late model V8 cars. I need to rebuild the carb because the car sat in storage for almost 2 years before I bought it from the original owner; an old man who put 168,000 mi on it. I drive my Suby everywhere now. But the gaskets are dried out and saturated with fuel. Sure the bowl is crusty too. I have rebuilt Holleys, Carters, Edelbrocks and the like. It would help to know which carb I have before I take it apart. To me this thing looks like a motorcycle carb. Thanks. I got rid of my 2003 Mustang GT recently. This little Subaru impresses me so much I am going to stick with Subaru. Next new car will be WRX. My '85 has had only rountine maintenance, plus brakes, tires, and soon a clutch....my Ford had four warranty fixes in the first 60days, and a new motor at 7mos. Trans went dead three times in 6mos. I didn't even abuse it. My Z28 was just as bad.
