  1. Since my '78 never had a vehicle speed sensor, I need to improvise something.

Either going to buy just the reader part of this kit - $16

    https://www.smallcar.com/index.php?dispatch=checkout.cart

And buy magnets to mount on the drive shaft.

    Or maybe this kit -

    http://www.thecruisecontrolstore.com/250-4165-universal-vss-signal-generator-magnet-kit-with-pick-up-coil/

The signal needs to be a 0-5V Square wave, the smallcar reader is made for EJ to Vanagon swaps so I'm assuming it's good here.

The VSS in the second gen speedos reads 4 points per rotation on the speedo cable and it seems like 5ish per wheel rotation.

So how many magnets per rotation on the driveshaft .... math ....

  2. Yes to coolant level, temp switch etc.

And though I can't see the actual valve, I can tell that the cable is hooked up to the doubler lever system, and it makes the noises I associate with it working right.

I'm thinking it might have a stuck air bubble?  Shouldn't running the engine with the rad cap off should get all the air out?

I want to disconnect it and run a hose through it, but high today is something like 13 degrees so that may be tough.

  3. I haven't made progress on the second O2 sensor an am thinking that I just have to find the right connector - from a '97 impreza - with a big junk yard search day when I have time.

Reverse lights are go, working on 4x4 light.  I haven't found a diagram but this is what I've deduced so far.

    PhotoDec05103136PM.jpg

RY - G and RB - GW are reverse lights.

And with the rest hooked up as pictured, I pulled a + from another source and when it is hooked up along solid line, 4x4 light is on only in low.  When it is hooked up via dotted line, 4x4 light is always on.

I'd like it to turn on when either 4x4 option is selected, so does that mean both g and B should have power?

  4. Another big step is giving my VSS a signal.

The speedo cable is completely covered the entire way or I could hook up some sort of reader.

My choices are either to trick the ECU into thinking it's always moving with an artificial pulse signal from some sort of chip, hook up some sort of hall effect sensor on the drive shaft or front axle, or try to cut away some of the speedo cable housing and hook up maybe an optical sensor...

This is a bit above my pay grade.

Looks like the VW swap guys usually buy adapter kits that either bolt to a bracket on the stock vanagon speedo or bolt to a CV flange.

The airplane guys seem to prefer to trick it with homemade pulse generating chips.

American made swap guys seem to usually do a driveshaft hall effect / reed sensor deal.

  5. Yeah, I'm swapping a '97 EJ22 into a '78 and the '78 never had a VSS hookup.

  6. Heater is not working for some reason. Could it be hooked up backwards?

And almost everything is working but heat - which is pretty important in Colorado right now.

Nobelsablepuma had already hooked up the heating hoses, and says that the heat worked great in the '78 before the swap project was started.

I'd really rather not tear everything out, so I was wondering if someone might know how this goes.

Engine bay side from the '78,

Top hose comes from the back driver's side of the heater core, and the bottom hose comes from the front driver's side.

Right now top hose is connected to the top hose on the EJ, bottom to bottom.

Are they hooked up backwards perhaps?

I'm assuming that matters ... right?

Pic from drivers side footwell.  Left hose comes out top in the engine bay.

  7. Hello,

I have a '97 Ej22 in '78 Leone wagon.  I took over the project with the engine and tranny installed and almost everything is ready to go except heat - which is pretty important in Colorado right now.

The previous owner had already hooked up the heating hoses, and says that the heat worked great in the '78 before the swap project was started.

  8. This is what I've gotten to so far:

    PhotoDec05103136PM.jpg

the GW and G are reverse light as stated above.

I pulled another power source, and when it is connected via solid line in the diagram (to the smaller of the two greens), the 4x4 light goes on only in low.

When power goes via dotted line, 4x4 light is always on.

So I'm assuming the 89 dash had separate lights for hi/lo, how can I get the single 4x4 light to light up when either hi or lo gear is selected?

This might be obvious, but the electricks are tough.

Both get power is my next guess...

  9. I'm working on an EJ swap into a '78 and I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out how to connect my rear O2 sensor.

The two O2 sensor connectors in my wiring harness - from a '97 impreza - are one that's female, white, that clips right in on the first 02 connector.  But the connector for the rear sensor is male and dark grey with 4 pins.  Everything I've found for the extension harnesses should also plug right into another female so I just got two and spliced a female to the male end thinking it would plug right in and go, however, the grey connector doesn't even mate to the white female connector.  So then I thought I'd cut it off and splice on another white male connector however the wire colors are not the same layout.

No one local seems to be able give me any info here and was wondering if someone on the forum might be able to.

The one I cut out of the '97 harness is on top -grey - you can see they're not the same.

The wire colors from top right corner and going clockwise incase you can't tell are:

    Grey Connector:

    YR, W, Y, BrownWhite

    White Connector:

WB, Kind of a dark Green maybe Blue, W, YR

As you can see, the wire colors are not arranged in the same way on the connectors and not all 4 are the same.  Can any one figure this for me?
