  1. It's surprising that it actually seemed to help drive in the sand after pulling the fuse. Mostly in the deep uphill stuff that a lot of trucks get stuck in. It's so funny seeing everyone's reaction when I have my sedan on the beach! Any good tips for beach driving? I haven't been stuck yet so I'm guessing I'm doing good!
  2. Hey should I be pulling the solenoid fuse or just the regular fuse with the cruise control?
  3. I was wondering how to turn off the traction control on my '03 outback H6. I heard it helps when driving in deep sand.
  4. I'm wondering if anyone could recommend to me a mechanic that is good and knows about Subaru vehicles. I live in great falls Virginia and they would need to be fairly close. It would be really helpful and I need a few things checked out. I appreciate any help I can get. Thanks.
  5. Yeah the car was idling. I checked right after I had changed my oil and I had it running for 5 minutes before I had checked the power steering fluid. Anyway I guess I'll see if I can find myself a mechanic.
  6. Well I checked the power steering fluid and it's not bad. There were no bubbles at all in the tank and everything seemed like it was working.
  7. I have driven tight circles on pavement and I'm pretty sure it's not torque bind. I have not checked for bubbles but I will do that. I think I will also change the fluid and see if that helps.
  8. My H6 has about 138,000 miles and I just replaced the drive belt about 500 miles ago along with two pulleys. I haven't changed the power steering fluid since I've owned the vehicle (bought at 125k miles). I've never looked at the condition of my ball joints before either.
  9. Another question. If it's not the power steering and the problem persists could it be a ball joint problem?
  10. Well I think it may have something to do with my power steering. Starting today there has been a small whining noise at full turn. Now I just need to know exactly what needs to be done.
  11. The feeling of the tire catching is felt in the steering wheel. It does not actually catch but feels like it's just powering through whatever is causing it to feel like it is catching. I'm at work right now but I'll idle through some tight circles in the parking lot when I get off and see what happens.
  12. I have a 2003 subaru outback sedan H6. The problem is that it doesn't always happen. It happens a lot but not always. And after I've been driving for a while it won't happen. Could you give me more info on torque bind and how bad is it exactly? How do I fix it if it is torque bind?
  13. I was wondering what is wrong with my car. Sometimes at slow speeds when I turn the wheel I'll feel a vibration very briefly that is accompanied by a slight noise. The noise is very low pitched and the vibration I can only describe as if something was catching the wheel. This only happens at slow speeds usually around 5mph but occasionally at higher speeds such as 15mph. It also usually happens when I'm taking sharper turns. It's starting to happen more often now and I'm curious as to what might be causing this.
  14. I've been looking around for one of those service manuals but have had no luck finding one for free. Anyone know where I can get one and if so could you post a link please. I'd really appreciate it as this service manual sounds really helpful.
  15. Alright I'll try to find those and hopefully that will help as well. Watching videos online helps out a lot since I'm very unfamiliar with cars mechanically. Just seeing people take apart some of the engine really helps because I get to see what some stuff looks like. For example, earlier I watched a video on how to get to the headgaskets and it really showed me a whole lot. specifically that I have a lot to learn. Hopefully one day I'll feel comfortable doing that myself and at least know what I'm doing. That service manual you are talking about seems like it would be very beneficial.
  16. Yeah I agree with you and I think a beater car will give me a lot more confidence. I'm sure I could figure out how to work on my H6 after getting some general knowledge working on another car. While they'll be different I can just adapt what I know to help me out and at the same time use this forum along the way. Everyone here gives a lot of support so far and that also gives me more confidence. I really look forward to learning how to fix my car. I know it may take a little while before I know much but I have plenty of time to learn being only 20. Now I just need to find an old beater car... I guess I'll check this forum and hopefully something will pop up sometime. I am in no rush though. Thank you guys for all the help, especially with the tools and knowing a little about how you started working on cars.
  17. I really appreciate all the help you guys have given me so far and I will probably be asking a lot of questions in the near future about repairing and maintaining my Subaru. I'm excited to learn more about cars and how to keep them running. Would it be a good idea to buy a cheap car for a couple hundred and try to fix it up and learn that way? I have family that could help who know a lot more about cars if I need it along the way.
  18. Oh wow I didn't know you could use your smartphone/laptop. Yes I have a cousin and uncle who are very good at working on cars. I think it's just intimidating because I've never really done it before and there's so much but I'm sure I'll warm up to it once I learn a few things.
  19. Well that's good. I really want to learn how to work on my car and fix it when it breaks. I'm excited to learn and I know that since I have little experience that I will need patience. Would it be smart to just invest in maybe a $200 tool set? And what are some other equipment I should invest in? Jack stands, floor jack, maybe a jump box, etc??? I plan on buying another older Subaru to maybe fix up and use to work on so I can learn more about cars. Is that a good way to learn? I saw a Haynes repair manual at the auto store... Are these any good to have? Are they really helpful or not really of use? Thank you for helping me out and answering all my questions so far. I really appreciate it
  20. And how hard is to do valve cover gaskets for someone who knows very little about cars mechanically?
