  1. I think I might need a trans for my 1984 subaru gl automatic wagon. I was looking on eBay and they say 1985-and up so is there a differnce between the 1984 and 1985 4wd automatics?
  2. I can give anyone that wants it a link to the vid I took of the noise, it won't let me post it here my email is gwywnc at aol . Com
  3. I'm not sure the trans is bad, the other day I was going down the interstate and went to slow down and the car completely locked up, had it towed home and when he was unloading it and what ever had locked up unlocked. I talked to a couple people and the said it was prolly the brake caliper so I rebuilt them and when u drove it it ran fine and changed gears but when I let off the gas there is this grinding/ whining sound. I could use some help cause I'm not sure what could be wrong. I had also drained all the trans fluid and it was free of all metal or anything... Thanks
  4. But is the front differential different from the whole trans? I don't really understand sorry and thanks
  5. Looks like I might need to get a new trans. I have a subaru gl with the automatic 4wd, what would I need to convert it over to a 4 or 5 speed dual range? I know nothing about were to start and would love the help thanks...
  6. Sorry it won't let me post a link to my you tube vid. I jacked the wagon up and when I put it into drive and push the gas everything's fine but when I let off the gas it makes this weird grinding/wineing sound. If it is the friend differential how do I fix it? Does that mean I need to replace the trans? Thanks
  7. Here's a short clip of the sound, I have the tire jacked up. It still happens when I coast in neutral...
  8. Hi, my brakes locked up the other day and bright my 1984 gl automatic to a screeching halt! I rebuilt the brakes and it tested fine but on the way home at speed (35mph) when I let off the gas the subaru would make a loud grinding sound. It doesn't do it when accelerating and shifts fine it's only when letting off the gas. And if I touch the brake while slowing down it would go away.. Can some one help?
  9. It's on jack stands, I took the tires off and every thing looks good, I started it and put it in drive and let it sit there and run. When I hit the brakes there's defiantly a lock up thing happing here. It's a automatic 4wd. I'm going to change the calipers but now I'm about scared to drive it cause what if it happens again in a curve doing 60 instead of going straight and about 35 mph... This is the cleanest gl I have ever seen. I had plains to have it lifted put a dual rang 5 speed I it but now I don't know...
  10. I drained the trans fluid and there was no metal at all in it... So that leaves only the brake calipers? How can I tell which caliper locked up? Do calipers go out like that just out of no were? Thanks
  11. Thank you, I'm am so gun shy about driving this now... What would cause both sides to lock up. I have heard of one side locking up but not both
  12. My subaru Wagon started pulling to the right the other day and today I was on a hiway and was pulling in to the gas station and the front brakes locked up or the trans went out. I had to have it towed and when he was loading it both front tires were locked up but when he was unloading it it "broke" free and went toward and reverse jut fine but when I drove it a little up my road it happened again but I was able to put it in reverse and it "broke free" again and I was able to get it back into my drive way... What happened? Is it a brake problem or trans? What should I look for? Thank you...
