  1. I have a 2010 Forester X Premium that I had to take the entire ABS module out of (and, of course, remove all the lines off of) to do some fab work after hitting a deer. Now I can’t get my brakes to work!!! Have tried doing hard stops to trick the ABS into cycling, have bled the brakes multiple times both per Subaru recommendation and the traditional “furthest to closest” method. All the lines running to the brakes are fine. There’s gotta be air in the ABS module and I cannot figure out how to get rid of it without taking it to the dealership and having them use their $1000 scanner to activate the solenoids. I’ve tried finding that connector under the dash but can’t find it :(. Someone please help...whose got a fix for this?
  2. Thanks guys for the info! Seems as though the consenus is the 96 2.2 outback sport is non-interference so I think given that I'm going to forego replacing the water pump and just replace the belt and the pulleys.
  3. I have a 96 Subaru Impreza outback sport with the 2.2L engine. I've been told this engine is interference. My timing belt is pretty cracked and needs replaced. The quote I got from a shop to replace everything is $400. I'm wondering if it is okay to replace just the timing belt and not the water pump and crankshaft seals? I know you should replace them all together but can I get away with not doing that. I ask because money is a concern so if I don't absolutely have to pay more I don't want to. Also, can you all tell me how hard of a job replacing just the timing belt is? I'm considering doing it myself
  4. My friend took the battery to autozone for me and had therm bring it from 80% charge to full charge and the car started right up. Still at a loss as to why jumping it would work once but not again...then charging the battery worked. The battery is also newly manufactured.
  5. No CEL so no codes to post. It's weird that it started from being jumped right before the gas station but then wouldn't 5 min later. Also, the other night when it wouldnt start it the car was making a weird noise from something on the passenger side of the engine like around the air filter...
  6. Alright guys, so...after having the car not crank or anything I played with a little wire on the starter that clips in to a contact (no idea what this is?) brushed up the contact and plugged the clip back in and the car started right away. I thought id found and fixed the issue...till this morning the car wouldnt start. Had my roommate give me a jump and it started right up. I needed gas so I had to stop and get gas and the car wouldnt start up again. This time someone gave me a jump and it sat on the cables for like 20min trying to start and was cranking but wouldnt start over. Can someone please help me...I have no idea what is going on with this car.
  7. I have a 96 Impreza outback that, yesterday morning wouldn't start. The day before it seemed to be taking longer to turn over but was still starting fine. I had the battery recharged at autozone and that took 15min so the battery was good. All the lights come on, everything works, just no cranking whatsoever. The starter was replaced 2 months ago after a no start issue and has been working fine since. I'm hoping it's not the same issue again. Alternator is less than 2 years old so I don't think it's that. Any pointers on where to start looking? I've tried the whole drop to neutral and try to start...didn't work.
  8. So I've just been monitoring it. The smoke doesnt always happen...any idea why that would be? Also, I don't lose a lot of oil and it only drips a few drops or so when parked overnight. I havent been paying enough attention to whether the smoke is worse after driving uphill or for long distances though I didnt have this problem till I started commuting on the interstate (1hr ea. way). My engine doesnt seem to be making any unusual noises or having performance issues. I might just leave it alone as some have suggested as I'd rather not take the engine out to fix a leak that isnt immediately dire for my engine.
  9. I have an oil leak (maybe multiples) coming from my 96 subaru impreza outback 2.2L (268,000 miles). There was gunk and dirt and oil pretty much everywhere so to help find the leak we cleaned everything up with degreaser. After driving it around I found no signs of dripping but I am getting lots of smoke off my exhaust especially where the connector is. I'm thinking it could be a main seal or separator plate or perhaps even a differential leak but nothing is obvious so I'm quite unsure without any real knowledge of what to do next. In the last 4k miles I've only had to add a quart of oil to the car which doesn't seem like a lot given how much it has been smoking. The diff oil was slightly low as well as the tranny fluid but both within range. Any suggestions on what to do now?
  10. I have been having smoke coming from my 96 Subie Impreza Outback 2.2L auto for a couple months now. It is white with no real smell except maybe a slight burnt smell. It is not particularly thick or cloudy but is definitely white and moderate. It appears as though it is coming from somewhere underneath the part of the engine block where the spark plugs are on the passenger side. I cant tell if it is coming from this metal housing that looks like it runs to the exhaust or from the block itself. I don't really knowall the engine parts so it is hard for me to say. Does anyone know of any "from under the car" diagrams of the EJ22 and does anyone have any idea where this smoke is coming from and how to fix it.
  11. Ok so turns out the plastic clip on the dial that pushes a metal pin in and out was in fact broken off. I temporarily resolved this by just manually pushing the metal pin (is the cable you guys re referring to?) all the way in. Started the car up and the heat started blowing right away. The weird thing though, and the problem im facing now, is that the heat will only work intermittently. It's been blowing cold and hot for the last 2 days. Any ideas why this would be happening in conjunction (or perhaps totally unrelated) to the plastic clip being broken?
  12. Oh Ya I guess that would be helpful. I forgot. It's a 96 impreza outback. Don't know the difference between the HVAC systems. 250k on it
  13. Heat won't work all of a sudden on my 96 impreza outback. It was fairly warm last week so I turned my a/c on by turning the temp dial from red to blue and then the other dial from heat to a/c. Then it got cold again and when I went to turn my heat back on by switching it back over to red and putting it on heat then turning the blower on it just blew out cool air. Can anyone tell me why my heat would work fine with no problems in the past then after switching it to a/c for one day it stops working? How do I start to try and resolve this? I need heat!
  14. So my front passenger tire blew out on the interstate. Tire had plenty of tread and I checked the PSI 350miles ago. That CEL mentioned earlier still hasn't shown up again and the only symptoms I'm having is the vibrating at speed and play in the steering wheel. Anyone have any idea why my tire would have blown...could it be because I need an alignment or tires balanced and rotated? Could it have anything to do with the torque converter solenoid clutch code from earlier? What should I have a shop look for? Btw, I tried shifting to neutral and into 3rd and that didn't make any difference with the vibrating...I dont know if that says anything but I thought I'd mention it
  15. I put the fwd fuse in and that didn't do anything. I've been driving for about 70 miles and the CEL light hasn't come back on. I don't know how to check those other things
  16. So I'm in a small town about 4 hrs from home and on the trip over here my 96 Subie impreza ow was vibrating pretty badly from around 52mph up to 80 (which is as fast as I went) with a small amount of taper between 60 and 70mph. I just assumed I needed a new alignment and/or tire balance/rotate. Then going downhill my CEL light came on. I was going to get the code pulled when I got to my destination (which was the only next place with an auto parts store) but when I woke up the next morning to bring it in to autozone the CEL light was gone but today, two days later, it came back on my way out of town so I had it read and its a coming back as torque converter clutch solenoid code. Why would this code be coming up twice in 3 days and going away on its own once when the only symptoms are car vibration and am I safe to drive home back over the mountains without destroying my vehicle?
  17. Where can I find the foglight kits you are referring to? And how complicated is it to wire them?
  18. I've been a forum member for a while now but I just thought I'd share with you guys. I reached the 250k mi mark on my 96 Subie Impreza Outback today! Had a few problems with the vehicle early into buying it that I may or may not have given up on if it weren't for the help of some super kind and knowledgeable forum members here. This site is a great resource so thanks everyone! Hope to see it through another 100k. How many miles does everyone else have on their Subie?
  19. My rear wiper on my 96 impreza outback hasnt worked since I bought it. Now that its winter (aka the rainy season) I'd like it to work. None of my fuses are blown and I'm terrible with electronic stuff so I don't even know where to start. It is just stuck in place in the middle of the rear window. When I turn the knob to turn the wiper on nothing happens...no sound of a motor...nothing. My rear window washer fluid also does not spray though I do hear a sound of something trying to work when i twist the knob for washer fluid...nothing comes out though. Suggestions on where I should start trying to solve the problem?
  20. I do a lot of night and early morning driving through snow, fog, and rain to get to and from ski and fishing locations and the headlights on my 96 impreza outback are just not performing well enough. part of the problem is I think they are not centered properly even though the level gauge on each headlight mount is centered in the middle which is how I believe they are supposed to be (?). I just recently put new bulbs in of the high power type and it didnt seem to improve anything so idk what the issue is. How do I clean my current headlights and restore them as a short term solution and then as a long term solution what would you guys reccomend as far as replacement headlights and aftermarket fog lights? Where can I get new headlights? And how would you guys set up fog lights for often super foggy, rainy, and snowy PNW weather? Should I just mount 2 on the bumper or do a roof rack style? Im a newb when it comes to aftermarket lighting.
  21. This is great advice! Never thought about bringing along the part I think might be bad. Ill make sure to have a starter in my car. Autozone always takes spoob back
  22. The battery coonections were cleaned last month and are nice and shiny and hooked up real sturdy like. I will start carrying the hammer though...thanks for that tip. I'm going to take the battery in tonight to have it tested and make sure its still good.
