  1. That's what I figured, I was pondering snagging pretty much all of the suspension and brakes, but after much deliberation, I've determined that my project is just too "complete and original" to bother with that at this time. Thanks for the feedback and confirmation.
  2. Our kids' '93 impreza wagon gave up the ghost (con rod) and I'm here wondering if there are ANY parts that would be wise to steal from it before scrapyarding it. It's an automatic. My project is a '78 BRAT. ~stayDOOGAN
  3. Hello again everyone. This will be a continuation of my poorly-titled previous thread; chronicling the acquisition of my BRAT. Found here: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/146923-pre-vin-number-decoder/ I now have the project in a location that could lend itself to actual physical labor and continuing progress! All I have at the moment is a video on YouTube, but this will be where I make future posts on the topic...pictures, further videos, updates, etc. Video here: http://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=-r_SkrYx7jM ~stayDOOGAN
  4. http://www.vehicleidentificationnumber.com/vin-decoder/subaru-car.html shows as such JF17AM21FAG204204 In the 1985 section there are a few that start with "JF1" I can't find anything else, but double check the VIN number.
  5. Hello again everyone! I've been spending some time around the interent this evening, attempting to locate the size or dimensions on the EA71 engine in the First-Gen Subaru Brat, and/or the size/dimensions of the engine bay. I'd of course measure it myself, but my '78 is currently a few towns over, waiting in my Aunt's yard, until I can get my new home/garage cleared up. Height from engine-mounts to hood, inner fender to inner fender, firewall to radiator mount. Basically to see what the options are for engine sizes sans modification. ~stayDOOGAN On a side-note, my search for interesting tid-bits tonight has borne fruit on a few sweet articles and items. Of few of them are... New Chevy LTG, avail in 2015. http://www.chevrolet.com/performance/crate-engines/ltg-four-cylinder.html and also... Old-School MotorWeek review of the Second-Gen BRAT.
  6. Mostly cleaned up, everything but behind the dash, likely stuck here until winter. Now accepting cash donations lol. The seats and carpet came out smooth and are now incredibly clean and complete for the age. The seats are worn but not bad, the carpet has 1 hole where the go foot sits. ONLY rust that was found in the interior is under the drivers side seat rail, about 3 inches long, but surface rust only. ~Doogan
  7. I think so, the headliner looks legit. But I still don't want it, I may remove it and throw it up on here for someone.
  8. The Brat was solely used as a snow plow for the gentleman's driveway, Bought in '92, parked in (around) '95. The plow was to be removed as a part of the sale/trade, so it didn't come with me. I had no idea that search and rescue board was there. :/ new guy syndrome. Thanks everyone, I can't wait to get rolling on it. ~Doogan
  9. Sooo, I just got the brat back to a place it can sit for a little bit until we close on this new house. I'm still showering off the rats nests and bird skull/spider web/utter filth....*shudder*. The gentleman on the left in the orange is the son of the guy who owned it. My dad is on the right. https://scontent-a-sea.xx.fbcdn.net There is a little bit of rust here and there, in the usual spots, but overall I think she'll be running after the first available weekend I get to work on it with my dad. Woo! Be honest, what does everyone think? ~DOOGAN
  10. Wet sanded the owners ranchero today, buffing it out tomorrow. Then title, then trailer, then clean, then pics.
  11. Air bags would be incredible! I may have to do some research.

  13. I've read on here that the gen2's suspension is around 1in shorter up front. I'm curious if anyone has any alternative suspension swap jobs on here as far as a mild lowering job goes.
  14. Hey guys, after looking around and after endlessly bouncing things around in my head, as is ALWAYS the case, I was hoping a few of you had some experience / information on pretty much the OPPOSITE of what I see all day long with Brat's, instead of lifting them up. I'm interested in different suspension/wheel/tire setups, possibly done to make the brat ride more like a sporty car than a truck. Drop it down enough, but not cheesy/scraping/useless low. Stiffen everything up a bit. Do Brats have decent handling characteristics naturally? Does it drive more like truck than a car, as far as the gearing and feel? What mods/adjustments would you do if you could? Bolstered bucket seats? 5 point harnesses? Different suspension altogether? RWD only conversions? Sporty Transmission swaps? Shoehorning in an 3.6l H6? (obscene) Anything absolutely ridiculous I haven't thought of yet? Thoughts? Pics? As to not piss anyone off, honestly I'm just in the psychotic/genius possibilities thoughts process. Indulge me, the more pics the better. I'm literally a "Sleeper" kind of guy anyway. Mostly. Mostly. ~Doogan
  15. Did those fit well over the course of time? what model are those? *want*
  16. Yup, talked to him yesterday. All I need to do is buff out scratches and fix a run in his ranchero! He's all about the aching college student in me haha.
  17. 69L-002001 to A69L-026000 Std 2 Dr Brat 4x4 4 Speed 4x4 1600cc 1.6l gasoline engine 4 Speed Yup! Just what I thought it was! Thanks ironworkerboomer!
  18. I know this is a loooooong shot, but does anyone have a source on fenders for the first gens? Fender flare kits, or even knowledge on making fiberglass molds for things like fenders? I've seen hood scoops also, where do these come from?
  19. All I have to do is wait to hear back from the guy so I can negotiate the price. It looks like I'll be getting help in the name of a graduation present, which is just... Absolutely incredible. From what I saw its got really thin metal on the top of the fenders next to the hood on both sides, typical wheel arch rust holes, and is absolutely disgusting with grime and animals... In fact we found 4 kittens less that 2 weeks old in the bed. Already took those home, before the brat finalized, nursing them now. Bonus! Anyone want free kittens? Lol. Set a trap for momma, but no luck . If somehow it just doesn't work out I'll post the name numbers and pm the address for anyone interested, but I WANT this beautifully ugly beast. It will give me a great opportunity to take my time and use my auto body college degree for personal enjoyment. I'd not be getting the brat to flip it, but to have it be my trusty best friend... Or worst enemy, given my past experience with used cars.
  20. Back home...about time, but I got a few good pics of where it sits at the moment. I'm hoping that I can get a great price for it, I'm just out of college as of the 17th, so I'm broke as a joke. We'll see, and I'll keep you all posted. It's been sitting in this spot since around '95, ran when parked. ANY suggestions, truly important things to look for? Have some pics!
  21. I apologize for the double post...phone browser issues. Please delete THIS one, as it has horrendous spelling errors. (Autocorrect garbage)
  22. Hey everyone, I'm on mobile right now so it's hard to search for previous entries, I've finally gone out to check on that 78 brat in town here. I've got pics I can upload after I get home but I was wondering if anyone can help make sense of an old pre vin number on the brat. A69L 015993.
