  1. Looking to see what brand of gear oil people use in their rear diffs and manual trannys. I have an 87 GL Wagon and am about to switch out my oil. I just wanted to see what people thought was a good brand of oil. Thanks for the input.
  2. Thanks for all of the advice. So what weight oil would you guys recommend for the diff and tranny?
  3. Crown Loyale. So if it doesnt have LSD than it is just an open diff then? Just making sure I am understanding what you are saying.
  4. I quess one question I have then is how would I tell whether I have an open diff or limited slip diff? I was reading in my manual as well and 75/90 covers the largest range of temps so would that be the best oil to put in the rear diff and manual tranny? If not what weight would you suggest for someone who lives in Washington State? I am just wanting to change out the diff and tranny this weekend. Thanks a lot for the help. Any other input would be appreciated.
  5. I have an 87 GL-Wagon and plan on changing out the rear diff fluid this weekend and was wondering what weight is recommened and how much? It is four wheel drive if that matters. Thanks for the help.
  6. Thanks for the help. Anyone else have some words of wisdom?
  7. Both drivers and passengers side lower ball joints are completetly shot on my 87 GL Wagon that I just bought so I am going to replace them this weekend. I was wondering if anyone could explain the easiest way to do this. I am sure I could figure it out by trial and error but it would be a whole lot easier if I had some sort of direction. Thanks a lot for the advice in advance.
  8. I am about to replace my pads and shoes on my 87 GL Wagon and was wondering what brand of pads/shoes you guys would recommend? This is my first Subaru and I am wanting to try to put quality parts on it as it needs it. Thanks for the advice in advance.
  9. My 87 GL Wagon has problems starting up first thing in the morning but once it is warmed up it starts just fine. I have found that if I give it some gas that it will fire up just fine. I was wondering is this a problem that everyone has with a carbed Subaru of this year or is there something I can do to help it start up more efficiently? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
  10. thanks everyone for the welcome. This really looks like an awesome resource.
  11. I just bought my first Subaru, it is an 87 GL Wagon. I am about to change out the oil and was wondering how many quarts of oil it should take? I know this is a stupid question but I would rather ask it than over fill it. Thanks for the help.
  12. edrach. what city is Spaldings located in? Thanks
  13. I am looking for a passenger side door for a 87 GL wagon. If anyone knows where I could find one I would be really appreciative. Thanks a lot in advance.
  14. I was wondering if anyone knows how hard of a job it would be to install a manual tranny into a 93 Loyale that currently has an automatic. Would this be worth my trouble or not. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
  15. I was just wondering if anyone has bought an engine from CCR? I am thinking of buying an EA-82 for my 93 Loyale and was just wondering how high of quality their engines are. Any input would be appreciated.
  16. I think that is honestly what the problem is. He seems like he is pretty lazy. My problem is like I said that there is no mechanics down here that work on Subarus. I think I might wait until I get back to Washington here in a month or so and bring it to a few mechanics and get their opinions. I don't honestly think it needs a new engine but I am just so frustrated at this point I thought that might solve the problem.
  17. Sweet82 after I dropped it back into my car it ran really rough and loud. I just figured that it was the timing and the fact that it now has an exhaust leak. However I was unable to get it running smooth on my own. That is when I decided to get an opinion from a mechanic. He says that there is more wrong with it than we are able to see and he would have to break it down some to figure out what was all wrong with it. It is just frustrating because I dont know whether to believe him or not because I am fairly new to working on my own car. This would not be a problem in Washington but down here in Texas no one works on Subs for some reason. It is really wierd no one drives Subs at all. I think I have seen like 2 down here the whole time since I have lived here. I am just glad I am about to get back home. Any suggestions as to what I should go from here? Northguy what do you mean by a JDM? I found a place that I can get a fairly new engine for $695 plus shipping out of Dallas I think. They get them from Japan after the cars no longer pass inspections which is fairly often I guess. Is there any place that you can think of that could beat that price. I would need an EA-82 non-turbo MPFI. Any one else feel free to offer suggestions or if you know where I could get a EA-82 that runs good I would really appreciate it. Thanks
  18. I have a tough question that I need some advice to. I bought a 93 Loyale a year ago and have been having a lot of problems with. I just can not get it running right even after pulling the engine and rebuilding it. I then took it to a mechanic and he is giving me a price of about $1200 to put in a new engine. I am not sure if it is worth it or if I should just part it out and cut my losses. What do you guys think. It is going to be hard to part it out though because no one drives Subarus down here in Texas. I just really like that car a lot but seem to not be able to get it running right on my own. Any advice would be much appreciated.
  19. How would I go about pulling the codes? I am pretty sure like you said that it is mainly just the fact that the timing is really off. How hard is it to use a timing light? The reason I ask is because I have never worked with one. Thanks for the help.
  20. I am pretty sure that I put the timing belts on right. I did it wrong in the first place because I timed them both at 12. I then pulled the passenger side belt off and place it at 6 when the drivers side was at 12 and the flexplate was lined up in the middle of the three lines.
  21. First of all I want to say thanks to everyone for all of the help. I finally got the EA-82 back into my 93 Loyale and it is running somewhat. I eventually got the timing somewhat right in my 93 Loyale so it turned over and runs. The only thing is that it runs really rough and seems to be louder than before I pulled it. It even dies if I just leave it iddling for a while. I am thinking that the ignition timing is off a little still. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how to go about getting the timing right on? I was thinking about getting a timing light. Would that solve my problem? Also other than the ignition timing what could be making it run so rough and loud now? Before I pulled it I had really no problems with it idling quietly. Any help would be appreciated as I am thinking about brining it in to a shop to have it looked at but would rather not do that. Thanks.
  22. Thanks a lot for the help mudrat. So I should just be able to remove the passenger side timing cover and put that side at 6 once the belt is removed and the other side is at 12 and the flexplate is lined up in the middle of the lines? I am going to try and do that today. I might need some help in regards to the ignition timing though. I really appreciate all of the help. As you can probably guess this is my first time pulling the engine out of my car. Thanks a lot.
  23. I am pretty sure that I got the engine timing right. The only thing that is frustrating me is the fact that I was told by my chiltons to put the two camshafts at 12 o' clock and then the flexplate at the middle of the three lines. Is that right? I am pretty confused about the adjusting the timing inside the disty. Can you possibly break that part down a little further? Also what should I be able to see when I pull the spark plug from cylinder 1? Other than that I think it is just going to take some trial and error until I can get it to start. Thanks for the input. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
