  1. No I had not seen it. That is a great idea to see if he has the rhino plans. Due to the grandkids do most everything with us I have to build it in a four seater.
  2. I had originally considered doing that. But at this time I think it would be more work than I want to do.
  3. I didn't think you could think you could talk me out of the rectangular tubing. Well I think you just did.
  4. Uberoo, Thanks for the input. I was designing the cage in horizontal levels not hoops from front to back. It still seams that it would be weight well spent to have a beefier base frame like the rectangular tubing across the outer edge of the unibody instead of the 6x6 plate.
  5. I spent some time on a paint program last night with a few first drafts. I tryed to post it with no success. I got in the back seat and found that the back seat needs to be moved back about 4". Since it will be used and stored outside I'm thinking of using after market bucket seats. I also am planing to use 1.5 x 3" x.120 rectainglur tubing as the base frame and 1.5x.120 round tube on the body. Any inputs please. I will try to post a picture soon OK I will ask my bride to post them.
  6. Gloyale, Thanks for the pointers on how to keep the suspension locations. Ferp420, I agree about copying what someone else has done. The problem I'm having is finding the pictures of buggies to copy. Scott, I appreciate your willingness to help and will more than likely ask for as much advice as possible. Monstaru, All I can say is wish me the best of luck. Give me as many pointers as you can think of. and I hope to surprise you. Teams go further than individuals.
  7. As far as pictures I will post some when I have more time to learn how. As far as my intent on what to build it looks as though it will be a 4 seater. I haven't been able to find any plans I have even contacted rhino buggies. They said that they did not buy that side of the business. I assume that plans would be a huge benefit when locating the drive train and suspension. If I cant get any plans or dimensions my intent is to remove the body from the fire wall back maybe keep the floor and build the body out of tube. I also intend on lifting it 2+". I will keep looking for the plans and with any luck sweet 82 will show and I can lean on him a little. It seems that all of the old pictures on the form are lost.
  8. I totally agree that it is a shame to cannibalize a cherry but I couldn't find a lemon. and to start with a good foundation the out come should be great. Having said that this is in very good shape there is only one spot that has cancer it is on the tale gate. driving it home I got it up to 50 miles per hr in a 65 zone and it did just fine.
  9. Yes that is exactly what I meant to say, now that I look at the paper work. He put it in the local want ads as a Justy. When I asked which 3 cylinder it had he said it had a 1.8 4 cylinder with a high low. I confirmed it had the high low and the 4 cylinder and as I said put money down on it and came home whistling. Now my whistling has gotten a little louder. He gave me a folder of the previous owners paper work. It is an 86. As I said I hit pay dirt.
  10. I hit pay dirt. I found and put money down on a 85 Justy wagon with a high low and a 1.8 it is beautiful. There are very few oil leaks and a tie rod end issue. The under carriage doesn't have a scratch on it (yet). The guy was showing me how clean the interior is and how clean the carpet is. He was a little disappointed it didn't mean that much to me. I didn't tell him why not. It is going to a month or so until I can start cannibalizing it. My daughters truck just lost the timing belt and it is an interference engine. I should have my hands full for a little while not to mention that it is coyote season.
  11. NorthCoast, Thanks for the chart this will help me a lot. I hate to ask and I did try to look it up but what the hay is an sus?
  12. There are two cars locally that interest me. One is a 99 legacy out back 2.5i with a manual, the other is a 99 legacy sus in an automatic. Both have head gasket problems. My concerns are that I am loosing sight of where this started and I may get a donor that will not work for my intended use. It just dawned on me I don't even know if they are all-wheel drive or not. Any way, would these work easily or should I keep looking for an earlier model. Does anyone know what gear ratios they are or a site that I can look them up.
  13. My intent is pretty mild and low bugget. Since I am having trouble finding an older car I have been looking newer. If I'm going with a automatic I don't know any reason not to go with a newer and larger car. If there are any reasons to stay away from any cars please let me what and why.

  15. On my way home from work and I called on the car. It was sold this may be for the best if I would have gone car shopping and come home late for Thanksgiving dinner my bride may have shot me.
  16. there is on 1990 legacy with an automatic transmission for sale in my area. I hope to go look at it this weekend assuming the holiday days don't foul me up. Any suggestions on this as a donner.
  17. No I haven't. I have been looking at cars from 1986 to 1989 in hopes of finding a duel range. To see a 2001 with a high low really surprises me. $5,000 is too much for a donor car for my blood. It is also over 300 miles to look at. It is now time to look at an automatic transmission. But witch one? Hoping for suggestions.
  18. I am giving up on the dual range after rereading the posts. Some have said the 4EAT would make a good trans for a off roader. I do plan on using it as a mountain machine but never a rock crawler. So I still need it to go fairly slow. As I mentioned a few weeks ago, there is 86 gl10 wagon in the area. Would this have a good automatic in it? What year and model should I start to look at and why?
  19. I have been looking at sweet82's posts and have pmed him in hopes he will turn up. His being local would be very benafical to me. With any luck I will find a car and run in to Glen. figuratively of course. I know I would be money ahead to buy the one on Craig's list it is a little too far to test drive. I'm still trying to talk myself out of this.
  20. That would be money better spent. And it is cute. I haven't started to build it yet and I'm tied of it.
  21. There is a 1986 Subaru GL10 wagon in the local paper it has an automatic. I asked the lady on the phone if it had a low range and she did not know . Can a automatic have a low range? And if so what am I looking for? sorry about all of the basic questions I'm pretty green about soobs.
  22. There are some details that I left out most likely from the trauma of the 5 mile per hr test ride. The transmission was so sloppy it was hard to find a gear at all. It had been backed in to the driveway when we took it for the ride. When we got back to the driveway, the kid suggested I not even try to back it in. I didn't think I could find reverse any way. The steering was very loose. There was not any blow by. There was a low roar of air escaping from somewhere down low I assumed it was emissions. It did have efi this was located in the spot were the spare tire should be. There were two bullet holes in the hood (I'm not kidding) I assumed this was to put it out of its misery. I asked him if this was alcohol related he said no. He just wanted to see if a bullet would go through the sheet metal. The kid was asking $700 and he said some one offered him $400. I told him to hurry and call them back before they came to their senses.
  23. I found a Brat about 50 miles away. It is a 1984 dual range with fuel injection. Say what? Fuel injection on a 84? The young man explained that the previous owner was a Subaru tech and this car was his pride and joy and he sold it to him about a year ago. I hit the mother load or so I thought. The body has dents in every quarter panel. The drivers window was missing and had been for at least the full year that he had owned it. The engine had a heavy coat of dust on it that showed no signs of maintenance for what looked like years. I thought I would take it for a ride reminding myself I only wanted the powertrain. I pressed the clutch and the engine almost stalled. I got it up to 5 miles per hour and it started to shake. The young man said if you just go faster the shake will go away. I told him I didn't dare. I went 3 houses a way and took it back. I have always driven old cars and ran them in to the ground, but this was with out any doubt the worst car I have ever been in.
