  1. Found the trans fluid in the front diff problem. The seal on the torque converter tube blew out. Also found two marginal u-joints in the driveshaft so that will be coming out of the donor car also.
  2. Another post on here with the exact info I needed. I figured I bring it up here. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/69087-transmission-compatibility/ My early 98 donor car trans should drop right in my daughters 97.
  3. Something else too check. Check your brake hoses. They, with age can break down internally and act like a check valve giving the same symptom as a stuck caliper. easy way to check is to pull the wheels, pump up the brakes and check to see if it is stuck. If stuck open the bleeder and if it frees up it is the hose. Caliper slides can also stick.
  4. Newest acquisition. Think it can be fixed? 98 Outback limited. Not planning on fixing it though. The transmission is going into my daughters 97 outback and the leather interior will be going into my 97. The two good wheels will become full size spares for the other cars. The engine will be checked over and put up as a spare for the others. any other good parts will be pulled and saved.
  5. A bad O2 sensor could cause extreme gas consumption and the flooding would cause misfires. It would be a good place to start.
  6. Not too late Gary. A lot of projects going on..... I will be pulling the donor cars engine and trans together. I figure it might be easier to split out of the car. I have to move the Motorhome out of the way to get the donor side by side with the daughters car. I will be pulling every good part out of the donor (none of the body) and my outback may be getting the donors leather interior.
  7. Never mind, Enough searching on google hooked me up with a 9 year old thread on here. According to it the 98 will work with the 97.. WooHooo. Hopefully the old thread is correct. Here is a link. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/72953-4eat-transmission-interchange/. It was started in 07 and revived in 09. I am glad that this forum keeps the old pages available.
  8. Well in December the used trans started blowing trans fluid into the front diff. I got my money back for the used trans as it was under warranty and they did not have another. Today I picked up what I was told was a 97 Outback wagon and the production date is 11/97 but it is a 98 outback limited. The transmission code has one different digit. The 97 has a TZ102Z2CBA and the 98 donor is a TZ102Z2DBA. Will these interchange? If not I have the complete 98 as a donor and what else might have to be changed? Any help is appreciated. I start the swap on Monday so I have a couple days to figure out what is needed. Thanks
  9. Transmission on that parts car is no good. Oh well still looking. I will pull the trans out of the car today or tomorrow and see what is causing the fluid leak into the diff.
  10. Found a car on craigslist being parted out but can;t get an answer on the transmission. Still trying to get an answer and trying to get the whole car.
  11. Great breakdown. with the amount and rate of fluid coming out I believe this might just be the problem. I should get a good idea of where the fluid is passing through. I may just look to change the pump too while in there.
  12. Checking ebay and they are a little pricey. Also an issue with shipping as you have to tack on at least 75 bucks for residential delivery. I would be much more comfortable dealing semi local. I am going to look into the tube seals on the converter as suggested here first. The transmission pumps the fluid out of the diff vent from the second the car is started. The diff is filled to the top with ATF. it would probably come out of the dipstick tube if I were to remove the dipstick. Another quick question, How difficult is it to change the pump? If I am going to go the route of changing the tube seals does the pump require pinion shaft removal? I assume the differential has got to be separated from the transmission.
  13. LKQ doesn't have one near and the only 3 they have nationwide are for 97 2.2 legacys. I need one for the outback. two of them are fwd.
  14. That could be a possibility as the yard required replacement of the converter and external seals to honor the warranty. Odd that it would run 2 months with no issues and then suddenly a major failure but that can happen. I will take a look at that first after I get the trans out.
  15. I am not sure the 98 will work in a 97. does it have an external filter? If it does it will not work. there was a change in transmissions around 98 and they are not plug and play with the earlier ones.
  16. Yes they are letting me keep this transmission as I had returned the original as a core. I will be looking for a service manual if I do go this route. Can't be much harder than changing the differential and planetaries in a Caddy 4T60E.
  17. Having a difficult time locating one. Not getting replies from some of the yards on Car-parts. I am thinking about tearing into the trans and replacing what is necessary up to a complete rebuild.
  18. I think that is where I found the last one. Just lucked out that it was local. Unlucky in that I ended up with one bad one off the bat and the second went less than 2 months.
  19. Now a new wrinkle. The yard is refunding the money for the transmission as they do not have one in any of their yards. Time to start looking for another. This is a pain in the butt.
  20. They are going to honor their warranty. It may take a couple days to get it but they will stand behind it.
  21. Just got of the phone with the yard I got the trans from. Waiting to hear back from their warranty guy.
  22. Have to get it home first and pull it. the yard is going to love this. They misplaced the first bad one I returned and were calling me to see who received it at the yard 3 weeks after it was returned.
  23. Found out the fluid is pumping out of the front diff vent. Front differential is full of trans fluid and the trans is about empty. Looks like a seal between the two sections let go. How hard is it to replace a seal in this location? Would I be better off using my warranty to get another used trans? I end up replacing all the external seals when I swap out the used trans and that is about 45 bucks a shot. If the seal between the diff and trans is easy enough to change I may go that route. Any help is greatly appreciated.
  24. It will be Monday before I can look further. It was a used transmission but it did come with a 6 month parts warranty. Cooler was clear and car has been running fine for a month and a half with no issues. I still have to get it back home. I can hope somehow a line got plugged and that is all it is. If not it is time to raise some hell with the yard I got it from as it would be the second bad trans I got from them.
  25. ATF light works fine. Was going off with the original transmission which did have issues. The trans even after cooling was trying to pump fluid out of the vent even though it had gotten very low.
