  1. Coolant is clear of fluid. Fluid level was good prior to problem starting. Proper dip stick (had 3 identical ones to choose from.) Trans is now low on fluid since the pumping out started.
  2. Ok I am looking for help with this. 97 Legacy Outback with an Automatic trans just started blowing its fluid out of the vent tube. Was running great with this used transmission for about a month and a half. Any ideas on why it might do this? Time for another used trans? It is still under a 6 month warranty but this is the second trans I have put in. The first one had a cracked differential housing. This one seemed good up until this evening. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
  3. Well it has been a while since I posted here but the car has been back together for a while. Turned out to be several leaks. Ended up with new front crank seal oil pressure sender and repairing some marginal threads on the right side valve cover bolts. The car still had a shake at 70 that gradually became a shake at 50 and a smoking left front wheel. My daughter had the car home this weekend and that is also fixed now. Left front caliper was sticking. Replaced both front calipers, rotors and brake hoses. No more shake, Much better acceleration and stopping. I had to diagnose the smoking wheel without looking at the car so I had ordered the hoses just in case that was the problem. They weren't but they were cheap enough to go ahead and put on when changing the calipers and rotors. I have seen plenty of brake hoses cause a caliper to stay locked over the years.
  4. Back together, No more oil leaks, New head gaskets holding up, Used transmission shifting great. Finally done......
  5. The right Wood druf key got here today. Came from Troncalli Subaru in Cumming GA. Have to work tonight and through the weekend so it will be going back together Monday. Picked up a 6mm helicoil kit to fix some of the iffy threads on the right side valve cover and timing cover.
  6. Thanks Grossgary. Just ordered one. Will be putting it back together again Monday.
  7. 97 Leagacy outback. 2.5l DOHC. I am trying to locate a new woodruff key for the crankshaft to timing gear and balancer. I got a new timing sprocket and balancer but I need a new key. Anyone know where or what size it is? Thanks
  8. Had a pretty good oil leak from the engine on the test drive. It appears to have been coming through the right lower front cam block. Front main seal started leaking some too. Engine is back out and waiting for the seal to come in. The old Dodge is up to 409,000 now but not the highest mileage Dodge I have owned. My old 90 B 250 had 590,000 on the original 318 when I retired it...
  9. It is all in. Set the trans with the floor jack before putting the engine back in. That was very easy. Set the engine with the hoist. Waiting for daylight this morning to go out and fill up the fluids and hook up the exhaust.
  10. Again asking if it is possible to put the engine and trans back in the car through the engine compartment. Has anyone tried this? Any info is greatly appreciated.
  11. Well started on putting the new seals in the new used transmission. The tailshaft seal that I received was wrong so again I am delayed. Found an oil leak on the engine so I will pull it and fis it while everything else is out. Has anyone tried putting the engine and trans in from the top already together? Or is it better just to puy them back in one at a time.
  12. Well it has been a while since I posted here. I picked up the transmission and last week put it in the car. After adding fluids I found the front diff leaking through a crack in the bottom of the housing. After spending 3 hours playing phone tag I found out they had another 97 OBW trans in the yard. Pulled it out this morning and drove the hour to exchange it. It is now in the back of the truck in the driveway waiting for the rain to let up so I can change the seals and get it put in.
  13. Found a 97 auto trans locally. It even comes with a 6 month 6000 mile warranty. I pick it up about an hour from here tomorrow.
  14. All four tires are the same brand, size, age and pressure. Just recently rotated. Problem started before the tire rotation. Trans is on its way out. If you manually down shift the trans in AWD or FWD it sounds like it is coming apart at the seams. It does still shift in auto.
  15. With a bike that is 550 lbs and a single rail trailer you should be under the 1000 lb mark. I would tow it. Trans cooler would be a good idea if you have an auto trans. If you have a stick there is no need. I just did a quick look up and a lot of the single rail trailers at between 350 and 400 lbs. A three rail trailer is sitting at 550 lbs. I do not see any problem. I almost forgot, Many years ago I used to pull what was a Three rail trailer that was converted to hold a 250 amp welding machine and a cutting torch rig. This was regularly pulled behind my 82 Subaru 4WD GL 1800 wagon with no problem.
  16. No vibration at all at Idle. Axles have been in there since before I got the car. No slop in the axles. There is just a slight shake around 60 to 70 mph. Before I disabled the AWD there was a bad shudder when pulling off the line. It went away with the fuse put in. I also discovered this morning if you manually downshift the trans is makes a racket and it is not a good racket. It did not do that last year. Fluids are full and good. If I can get a good used trans and not have to give the old one as a core I may tear into it and look into rebuilding it. I can always hope it is easy to rebuild as a Torqueflite....
  17. Well the Transmission is the issue. Pan is not bent and after getting of the phone with my daughter I just found out it has had these symptoms for about 6 months. I am going to let her take the car back to school and hunt for a good used trans. After I get that I will get the car back and change it out.
  18. Thank you very much for that Info. I will let the 99 slide by. I have to check a couple things as I do not think the car was acting this way prior to the head gasket replacement. But then I had not driven it more than a mile or two as it is my daughters outback. I definitely do not remember any shudder when I pulled it on the Uhaul transporter that I used to get it home. But when it quit on her it had the trans temp light on. When I got it home it had a bad head gasket. Head gasket is now fixed. Time to try and find a good used trans unless I luck into something simple. Time for me to get some sleep. working 13 hour nights this weekend.
  19. Will a 99 auto trans work in a 97 legacy outback wagon? I have a shot at picking up a 99 with body damage with a good trans cheap and I think the auto is going out on my 97. Just wondering if this will work.
  20. Ok after driving it to work tonight the wheel shake is still there in front wheel drive just not as pronounced. Can the trans pan being pushed up a little cause some of these shuddering issues? It is a possibility that it got pushed up a little when pulling the engine for the head gaskets.
  21. Hello all. I have an interesting issue. 97 Legacy outback wagon Automatic shuddering while pulling of the line in first gear. Feels like a bad trans mount in an old RWD car. Problem goes away with the FWD fuse in. There is also a slight shake at 60 in AWD but it is also gone in FWD. Unfortunately I did not drive it prior to pulling the motor for head gasket replacement except to drive it onto a Uhaul transporter for the 70 mile ride home where my daughter broke down. As I said, runs like a scalded dog in FWD but shudders in AWD in a straight line or turning unless on a gravel road. Shudder goes away then also but cant get up to 60 to check a tire shake. (I am not that nuts). One more thing. When trying to get a rounded nut off on the bottom left bellhousing the axle slid out some with the stub shaft. As this is my only Auto roo I do not know if this is supposed to happen. I did end up pulling the left axle to gain access to the rounded nut. Everything went back together in their original orientation. Any help or ideas would be helpful. I do have the option of bidding on a couple wrecked roos for parts if necessary.
  22. Thank you. Finished the head gasket job on the daughters Outback and during a long test drive it started shuddering. It seamed to be coming from the transfer case so I put the fuse in to disable it. No more shudder and it runs like a scalded dog. Looks like I will be looking at changing a Transaxle soon unless I find it is something simple.
  23. Here is one of the RV with the current toad. In a few years when the last kid leaves the nest I would like to get a Brat or a Scout to use as a Toad.
