Leverage, comrades, is your best friend. I did a clutch replacement on my Legacy and, using two people and a floor jack, I was able to "precisely" raise the transmission into place, and bolt in. This worked well enough, but bench pressing any tranny is a mite dangerous. Anyway, just my $.02. ScoobySchmitty:D

I really like the Baja, though I don't own one. It is essentially an Outback without a rear trunklid, kind of like a Ford Explorer vs. an Explorer Sport-Trac. Little mechanical difference, just nothing over the trunk! I really think Subaru hit home with the Baja, though some car magazines don't really like it. If Subaru took their Dual Range tranny out of overseas Legacy's and plopped it in the Baja, you would have a MAJOR success I think. AWD is great, but 4wd you can go offroading ScoobySchmitty:banana:

Funny you should mention that. That's what my friends have named my 91 Legacy Good to hear your son was unharmed. I had a run in with the local wildlife last winter, and it could have been worse! Kudos to your son for good accident avoidance thinking, too bad that pipe was there... Hope you get the 91 fixed, keep us posted! ScoobySchmitty

when was the last time the transmission fluid was changed??? I had a 87 Olds that had a similar problem, though it would only stick in a gear, THEN shift. I changed the fluid, problem gone. Yours might go a little deeper than a fluid change, but when you find what the real problem is, I would do this as well. Just my $.02 ScoobySchmitty:banana:

What r u driving? There are a good amount of parts out there for the WRX and later model impreza's and legacy's . I have a 91 Legacy, and it's almost impossible to find bolt-on performance parts for it. http://www.cosmoracing.com has a cone filter that will attach right to your MAF sensor, and includes a bracket to support the assembly (though you might opt to make your own...), and a lightweight underdrive pulley for your crankshaft. Both will increase your gas mileage for sure, and will give a little "umph" to the engine, emphasis on LITTLE. It's not a big gain, but BOTH parts can be had for under $100. Not bad for a basic upgrade. MY question is, what parts for a WRX will swap out for other Soobs, i.e., suspension parts, short throw shifters, etc. ScoobySchmitty:banana:

My parents had the same problem with their 94 Astro. My Dad replaced a sort of "resistor pack" that controlled the motor speed. After that, it worked fine. Methinks you might have to get a Haynes Manual and check out the electrical schematics section, if you are knowledgeable in such an area Hope this helps out. ScoobySchmitty:banana:

I think he's onto something here. Make sure your clutch adjustment isn't keeping pressure on the throwout bearing when the clutch is fully released. I have not had this problem before, but I think lothar34 is on the right track. Still, what worries me most is the metal shavings in the oil. I had this on my old 90 before the tranny started dying, such as not letting me into 3rd gear and such. Check to make sure your rear diff ratio is 4.11, not 3.70 or 3.90 My 90 Legacy had a 3.9 on it instead of a 4.11 like it was supposed to, and thus slowly tore my trans apart. Just my experience. Usually when I start my car up, I have my music blaring right away, like any good college student But, I recently had to really move to get to class, so I did not immediately hook up my CD Player, and noticed that my poor 91 Legacy is squealing and shrieking like mad! :boohoo: I know it's the belts, primarily when I am putting strain on the steering pump or compressor. Two things I can't figure out. #1, They are new belts, under 10k miles on them, so they really should not be doing this, and #2, If they are already out of adjustment (my error), how tight SHOULD they be??? Any suggestions??? ScoobySchmitty:banana:

::WHEW::!!! With the help of my college's maintenance dept, we were able to get it open! We took some long wire, entered through the driver's window, and pulled the door handle, opening the door! Next stop after class: KEYMAKER for an extra KEY in my wallet!!!! Thanks for all the suggestions and help guys, I really appreciate it! ScoobySchmitty:banana:

DAMMIT DAMMIT DAMMIT!!!:temper: Being the idiot I am, I accidentally locked my keys in my car. Does anyone have an idea of where the locking mechanism is on a 91 Legacy, and which way you need to push/pull on it??? I have a spare set, but they are back home (nice place for them). If anyone has ANY insight so I can avoid the $60+ charge for a tow truck to unlock my soob would be MOST APPRECIATED! Thanks all. ScoobySchmitty:dead:

Hiya all! I have a question for everyone that owns a 90-91 Legacy. Who would be interested in a completely repainted (to your specifications) L-series grille? This is the standard Legacy Grille, not the cross-hatch design seen on LS models. It would be a similar repaint to the Brat Grille that is for sale on eBay. Any thoughts, comments? Thanks! Actually, I just guessed that there are syncro's on reverse. It would make sense, to prevent this grinding problem. Still, does anyone know if the dog gears on reverse spin in opposite directions, instead of the same direction as with forward speeds? If the dog gears for reverse spin in opposite directions, then synchro's would make a whole lot of sense! I know the basics of a manual tranny, but no specifics on Subaru's design. ScoobySchmitty
