  1. So it would seem that it is a catch 22 situation - a car that should be fixed - but is not worth fixing --- it will probably end up in my dead car pit - ratted for a few parts - and end up in the crusher.
  2. Apparently the radiator was somehow damaged and not noticed by the lady owner - cooked good and proper - heads gone soft - bottom end questionable - only one second hand engine found in Queensland (1000s of kms away) for $6000.00 ----- an AVCS EJ204 non turbo motor wont fit ?
  3. Hi all - A friend has a 2008 Forester turbo - badly cooked engine - can I easily fit a non turbo engine ? (cheaper + more available) or must it be an identical motor ? Cheers.
  4. Thanks guys - I always assumed the rear suspension was "fixed" - I will see if I can get some adjustment out of it.
  5. I would have some spares - I am in South Australia.
  6. Hi all - I have an 82 Sportswagon (Australia) that is wearing out the insides of both rear tyres - and it handles like a boat on dirt but is fine on bitumen - I have been under the car and I cant see anything unusual - the car has only done 120,000 kms - I have the Subaru workshop manual but it does not mention this problem - any ideas ?
  7. Hi all - I have an Impreza - 2007 - automatic - recently discovered RHF tyre scrubbed out - (should have had that alignment done) - went to the local tyre guy - he did not have the exact same tyres - got two new ones on the front - 205/60/16s - same "size" as the rears - he assured me that the circumference would be the same - hmmmm - got home and measured them - the new front tyres are a good inch and a half bigger than the rears (in circumference) - I know this would be an issue with a manual car - but an auto ?? Cheers
  8. Hi all - My 82 sportswagon has been refusing to start in the morning - it has been cold and dewy just lately and the old girl doesn't like it - this morning I had to have the bonnet up while the sun dried things out for 10 minutes - started fine after that - never had this problem with any of my other Subarus - Brumbys - L series or wagons - so I bought a hair drier today at the second hand shop - a quick burst of warm air over the coil and distributor cap used to wake up my old Mitsubishi Sigma years ago - so tomorrow I will give it a try - but it does not explain why THIS car has the damp don't want to.
  9. I recently did the T belt on our DOHC AVCS Impreza - the only issue I had was holding the LH inlet cam pulley in place (it would NOT stay in position) - I had to make a tool to hold the pulley while I got the belt on - a piece of wood with three bolts through it to fit the shape of the pulley and a piece of wire tied off to the body - worked well - I also replaced all the idlers - tensioner and waterpump - genuine Subaru parts - and oh yes I made a tool to hold the harmonic balancer to undo - retighten the bolt - I marked where it was and tightened it just a bit more than that - with oil on the threads and washer face - you do NOT want that bolt to come undone - also it is important to tension all bolts to the recommended torque - I did except for the harmonic balancer as in the workshop manual it lists 3 different bolts and tensioning techniques but there was no part number on the bolt ?? good luck.
  10. Well - I managed to download the service manual - things I did not realize ---- the air conditioning belt is "stretch fit" - the valves can get tangled up if you turn the pulleys the wrong way - they say the cam pulleys and cover backing plate (LH) must be removed (along with the tensioner bracket) to remove the waterpump --- WTF ?? surely not ! Cheers Steve C
  11. Hi guys - I am soon to change the timing belt on my 07 Impreza EJ204 with AVCS - apparently extra caution is needed - especially with the inlet cams ? is there a way to lock the camshaft pulleys in position ? any advice on the potential pitfalls would be greatly appreciated - Cheers Steve C
  12. Hi guys - is it possible to replace the camshaft gear without splitting the cases ? - on the motor I have the gear is loose - seeing it is alloy I guess it hasn't damaged the cam - I am thinking of getting the gear very hot and the end of the cam very cold and drifting it on there - what are my chances ? Cheers
  13. Well I looked a bit closer - and the camshaft gear is loose on the camshaft - oh dear !
  14. Hi all - new to this forum - I have an ea81 motor (recon) with a weird "clackity clackity" noise at idle - that completely disappears at about 1200 revs - then comes back at idle - it was REALLY bad when I first got the motor going and after I adjusted the valve clearances it was a LOT better but still annoyingly noticeable - any rate I pulled the motor out and sump off and noticed that the camshaft gear will move about 2-3 mm - the workshop manual puts the camshaft thrust clearance at .020 mm - I cant see if the gear is loose on the camshaft (press fit) or the whole cam is moving back and forward - would this be making the noise ? the gear looks ok - no horrid wear - the valve train looks ok (recon motor) - I think it has solid lifters - any ideas ? Cheers
