Ok, here's roughly what you're looking at before caliper and rotor are removed (this is '00 outback) note: no access to studs
Here is after the caliper and rotor are removed (note studs are accessible, though the Subaru procedure has you remove the axle nut, extract the axle, remove the hub, and press out the old stud(s) and press in the new stud(s).
That last picture sums up where i'm at right now. My assembly looks a little different though because i had to remove 4 allen heads. It doesnt seem as though i can replace the studs at the point. I have to take that stud plate off. The axle nut is the only thing holding me back. Suggestions to get that off?

How do i back off the parking brake shoes? I also do not have access to these bolts, as it is 8:30 pm. It seems to me that the rotor is one big piece that has been run through a lathe, is this right? Seems like the studs are pounded through the inner part of the rotor...Any of this sound right?
Excellent suggestions! THe rotor is now off....for the hub nut now. I've tried a breaker bar on it, and it wont work...Does it need turned left to loosen?? Should i use an impact wrench on it? What do i need to do about that locker on the hub nut?

Hello. After the caliper and caliper bracket are out of the way, and the rotor won't come off, first make sure you have backed off the parking brake shoes. Sometimes these will stick.
Next if the rotor has any bolt holes just inside the diameter of the hub studs. If so, the oem rotors will take an 8mm (don't know thread pitch; probably 1.0 or 1.5) bolt to drive it off the rotor. If no holes or you don't have the bolts, a 4-10 lb sledge is your best friend. I had to pound mine off my '00obw it was a real pain.
Then once you get the rotors off, if you need to remove the hub to replace the studs (i've seen arguments both ways), then yes (if you need to remove the hub), you will have to remove the axle nut. Subaru says hot to hammer on the hub as it can deform it, but people often seem to use a hammer to remove and install the studs.

is the e-brake on?
I tried pulling it off with the e-brake off. Basically....as far as i've gotten is removing the caliper and the thing the caliper attaches to. What do i have to "undo" to let the rotor slide free?

How do I remove the rear rotor on my 99 subaru forester? I have removed the caliper and cannot get the darn rotor off. I have to replace the wheel studs before tomorrow because I have to work tomorrow. Please help me!
Edit: Also, do i need to remove the axle nut? Is an impact wrench necessary? Is the axle nut clockwise thread or reverse thread?

I'm picking up my "brand new 1999 forester s" 5 speed this morning from the dealer. It has 80k miles on it. Any suggestions on what fluids I need to check/replace? The motor oil has just been changed, along with the filter. I am so excited to pick this car up. It's so cherry. Thanks for any advice.

Notice the very light ATV is sunk into the mud in several pictures...not floating on top if it. Dualies are for agricultrual implement or towing; not offroading.
It looks as though if you had front duals then you'd be doing more "plowing" through mud than just floating over it. I think that you would lose a lot of momentum trying to get through that messy stuff. For mud, I'd skip the duals in the front.

Will be driving to Missoula Montana from Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania within a few weeks. I've realized that I MUST upgrade my stock springs. 4 people and all of their gear to Montana will bottom my car out to the point of destruction. I figure I can get my hands on some accord springs, but the RX springs in my area will be tough to find. Does anybody have some that will fit my car and are in half decent condition? Also, I've never done a spring swap, but I dont imagine that it'll be that difficult. How bout some pointers? Thanks guys.

Sounds like a bad cv. Does it clunk when tuning nd/or accelerating?
it could be a wheel bearing also
Boots are great. Good when I bought the car. I'm putting bumpy/hard miles on this car. It will clunk when hitting bumps and when a jolt in accleration occurs.

I just did a search, and this came up. It's always something to consider. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/catalog.gsp?cat=165124&path=0:5436:120160:120006:119896

I'm hearing klunk klunk from my front end. Sound's like it's on the drivers side. Also, at highway speed, there is a "rubbing/grinding" sound. It's pretty subtle. It's also from the front end. CV joint? I'm really not sure, although it's probably an ez answer. Whattya think?

I've run coopers on my f-150 for years, and they're an awesome tire. Good price too.

The unibodys are sure stiff enough.

What am I lookin at to pay for a 5 spd dual range transmission in Pennsylvania? And...If i install one, is it gonna look like garbage in the interior?
-
Subaru redesigned the pistons, making them with shorter skirts and coating them with Molybdenum to imporve gas mileage.
Kinda interesting, if ya didnt know it...They use Molybdenum to coat bullets. They leave less residue and copper in the barrel when coated with the mentioned lubricant. Neat, eh?

I'm gonna have to tear some of my interior out to inspect the damage. In my opinion, it's not too bad yet, but the rear wheelwels in the front are starting to go. I'm haveing them replaced. I really want this car to last me another 10 years. Hopefully!

Ok, so i just got my car back from my body guy because i hit a few deer a couple months back. When i picked it up he said not to put too much money into it because the undercarriage is on it's way out. This is not what i wanted to hear. I looked under the car, and it doesnt look that bad. I dont know what to do! Should i get it undercoated or what? Run it until it sags in the middle? This is making me rething getting the rusty body spots fixed in the spring. ARRG!! What would you do?

Since the car was originally from back east the mechanic thinks that the salt they put on the roads probably ate the ground up.
Do you guys not use salt on the roads out west?? How do they keep the roads clear?
-
Are that inches? One inch is 2,54cm, so it has ~ 10 cm ground clearance.
In austria, a car must have 8cm to get a license.

In pennsylvania, you have to be able to rull a pop can under the car, without it hitting anywhere.
-
You may not know this, but that was actually me driving. I'm ok though, just a few bruises.
-
Out of curiousity, how does your car handle? My car handles like a turd on wheels.
-
There has to be a mitigating factor to cause the destruction of two pistons. Otherwise, it's a complete fluke. It just doesn't add up.

Anything in a pinch!!!
That, might be, the most absurd thing i've ever seen.
