  1. Thanks for the sources. Its a headache whenever a small part like that holds up the entire project.
  2. I need a Pilot bearing for an 80 ea71. Got the old motor out and swapping it with a JDM ea71. All we need is the pilot bearing to get it in. Does anyone have a good source? None of the locals have it. I need it before the 8th of April if possible.
  3. Where do you get extend. I was planning on using Por 15, but that stuff costs more for a gallon that I have in the car lol .
  4. I'll have to look into that ... I was never really keen on the rubber stuff either - when I bought my old VW Golf back a few years ago, I pulled all the rubber stuff off. Luckily , there was no rust. I just lightly sanded and sprayed the hell out of everything that didn't move. Sold it last year and it still doesn't have a trace of rust on it. It sucks with this subaru because the upper body is fine except for a small nickle sized hole in the drivers door. I guess I can't expect a perfect car that is 25 years old. I just hope this project becomes a good reliable car. I just offed my 95 escort GT ... pulled the tags off of it yesterday and dropped the insurance. Was a good car, but it's time had come. We have a 2003 Suzuki Aerio AWD to get around in, but I can't wait for the Subie to be finished. I'll post some pictures after the motor gets swapped in this weekend.
  5. I crawled under my 80 dl hatch to see what kind of shape the bottom was in today before we started the motor work this weekend. discovered a few places that need fixed. One, there is a baseball sized hole in the rear passenger floor that has been patched with a sheet of thin metal. The patch isn't welded in, just screwed. There is also a small hole in the bottom next to the jack point right behind the passenger front wheel. I'm going to see if my gf's brothers can weld them up for me and fix them for good. Other than those two spots, the other rust seems to be surface rust on the bottom. What do you guys suggest as an undercoating? Should I go all out or just rustoleum the bottem every so often?
  6. I know some people will probably bash me, but the whole set was only 25.00 from autopartswarehouse.com I'm not going to use the head gaskets, so I don't see any worries. I've never used Inisho gaskets before but I have never heard anything bad about them. I picked up a new dizzy cap and rotor, as well as a new v-belt and a set of 4 NGK plugs. Couldn't find wires for it.
  7. I know it has more than I needed, but it was cheaper to get the whole set. http://replacement.autopartswarehouse.com/parts/autopartswarehouse/viewImage.jsp?image=img.autopartswarehouse.com/live/A800020794ISH.JPG Is everything there that I need? I see the valve cover gaskets and a few other obvious ones like the carb base gasket. I don't see the oil pump gasket or the front main seal. Are they in there?
  8. What gaskets will I need when swapping out the motors. I'm going from a 1980 carbed 1.6 ea71 to a 1980 jdm carbed 1.6 ea71. I'm going to do the rear main seal, the valve cover gaskets, and both the intake and exhaust gaskets, but what else will I have to replace while I'm at it? Forgive my ignorance, this is my first subie motor swap.
  9. So is there a possibility that this motor wont work with my US ea71 carb or intake manifold?
  10. Cool ... I didn't know that ... that is very nice.
  11. As far as BHP and other ratings, I think they are pretty much the same.
  12. Same internals really ... there is a higher compression ea71 , but I don't know anything about it.
  13. Just called my brother - he said the gouge isn't a gouge, its just discolored.
  14. I havn't seen the motor yet, he is driving it up this weekend. I'm going to have to swap out the bell housing as mine has the top mounted starter -- but I'm going to keep the old one for the D/R tranny swap later on down the road. I do see the "gouge" in the pics ... I'll call him and ask. Will that need to be replaced since I am swaping out bell housings ?
  15. Slipping clutch feels just like it sounds. If you are pushing on the gas, but don't feel the car accellerate like it should, its probably slipping. Its like taking two peices of sand paper and rubbing them together .... the more you rub, the less sand is left. When there is no sand left, there is no grab, so the two parts of paper just slip back and forth on each other. No friction. So when your clutch is slipping, there isn't enough material left for the clutch to make friction with, so I just spins without grabbing .... like driving your car on a sheet of ice ..... push down on the gas, the engine will rev, but wont move the car very far.
  16. Where did you get the dash cover? I need something like that for my 80 Hatch. Interior is perfect except for a huge crack in the dash where it humps up into the gauge cluster.
  17. http://homepage.mac.com/shanewolfe/PhotoAlbum20.html Here is the JDM motor - my brother risked his life in the ghettos of DC to pick it up at the terminal. They roughed it up a little during shipping , so hopefully everything is ok when we bolt it up. Wish me luck. I'm gonna need it :-)
  18. My ea71 is at the terminal awaiting pickup from my brother. Is there anything I need to do to preP the car for the swap? Any trouble I might run into while pulling the old motor? Anything I should look out for?
  19. I'm a glad I won't have to piss with it during my motor swap then. Got a new jdm ea71 shipping in this week. The less headaches, the better. I'm new to this style motor, so less the less hangups, the better.
  20. My car is an 80 dl hatch ... what modles had this feature? ]
  21. That clarifies it. I have never seen that type of system before. All of my cars have been manuals, so I really wouldn't need it.
  22. I'm a little confused at the moment. I've seen posts on here about the hill hold. Is this the same thing as the e-brake? What cars have it installed? Sorry for my ignorance, I'm new to subarus.
  23. I may make it out there if my subie is done in time. I want to get the new motor in this month and tag and insure it. Next will come an olive drab paint job and a safari rack ....
  24. Greenridge state forest has a 20 mile offroad trail .... Savage river has one inside the forest that is called poplar lick ... its about 3 miles in and 3 miles back..... a few small river crossings ..... then there is one in the town I grew up in called Nightengales trail ... all are located within allegany county, md except for the one on savage river - its located 10 miles from where I grew up ... in Garret Co. There is also Potomac State forest offroad trail, but I'm not sure how long it is or what the terrain is like. Lots more trails that are not state maintained. Could make out to be a really fun weekend .
  25. I'll have a low mileage engine soon .... ea71 out of an 80. 52k miles on it. Only issue is a dead piston. I bought a new motor for mine, so this would will probably just sit around once I get it stripped to the long block.
