  1. What line did you install this on? Did you eventually replace the rings ?
  2. Anyone have any recommendations on gutter mounts for a diy safari rack? Looking to start blueprinting some designs so a welder friend of mine can put it together. 1980 DL hatch
  3. Probably gonna do the compression test tonight ... what kind of readings are normal on the ea71's ?
  4. Damn ... that sucks ..... I'm a Maryland Subie owner too ... have an 80 DL Hatch ... new to the community here @ USMB...
  5. After running about 2 miles, there were about 3, 4 tablespoons in the breather.
  6. I don't want to have to carry a case of oil with me everywhere I go ... not to mention the mess it makes inside the breather lol. Maybe I just need to touch up on the workings of these motors and figure something out. Can you guys recommend a filler breather cap?
  7. Will do ... I'll check the compression and see what kind of readings there are and then post.
  8. Only thing is , It doesn't look like the oil is comming out of the pcv valve tube, Unless I am missing something. The oil is comming out of the little hole that is located on top of a little white plastic cap to the left of the inside of the air filter case. I made a diagram in paint .... best I could do while at work :-)
  9. Anyone have a good source for the things I need for a rebuild ... ie Pistons, rings, gaskets, ect.
  10. Do you think they would still carry the pistons for the ea71 ? I've found ring sets for 65.00 .....
  11. edalexandr, did you do a total rebuilt to fix it or just a ring job?
  12. I'll run it for a few days with the lucas in it and let you guys know what happens. I figure its gonna wind up getting pulled and getting a ring job, if not a total rebuild unless I can find a straight ea71, which is probably going to be impossible around here.
  13. Zeno....have you ever seen this issue or are you as puzzled as i am?
  14. Thats the odd thing with mine , its running good from what I can tell . This is my first carbed car with a boxer motor ... so im not 100 percent sure how it is supposed to sound or feel. Doesn't feel like its doggin down the road though. Not getting any smoke out the tail pipe either.
  15. Ran some lucas through it today. I'll run it and see how that does. After some miles, I'll do an oil change and run a can of restore through it and see what happens. I've never used Lucas before today but a few guys on the high powered motorcycle drag circuit sware by the stuff. It's almost like glue going down. Thanks for the info.
  16. Nope, didn't see any under the oil filler cap. Now the residue looks more like oil than anything ...made another post about it. See this post. oily residue
  17. 1980 DL 1600 4wd Hatch 52k Miles All original. Replaced PCV Valve, getting suction on it now. A little pressure comming out of oil cap when I loosen it, with a little bit of fumes. Getting some Oily residue in the breather. Not comming out of direct top of carb, but out of small white plastic cap with hole in the top that is located inside the breather case. The white cap is located to the left of the inside of the breather case when looking at the front of the car. Could this residue be caused by a bad evaporative canister or a timing issue? I already replaced the pcv thinking that was the cause. The car burns no oil. No signs of coolant in the oil pan. No smell of gas in the oil.
  18. Would the milky residue in the breather be a sure sign of a blown gasket? Its not that much, just a little is in there after it has been run, Although I haven't driven it very hard, just on the backroads.
  19. Just picked up an 80 DL 1600 cheap ... 52k original miles. Think the head gasket may be blown ... getting a little frothy mix of fluid in the breather. I didn't see anything on the dipstick.... no funky stuff comming out of the tail pipe. If it is a head gasket ? Do they still make them for the ea71 ? How much time is involved in replacing one or both, and can i do it without pulling the motor?
  20. Yeah , that was my next step ..... just don't know if I'm gonna be able to squeeze a set in there or not .... i might go to the local tool shop and pick up one of those gator grip sockets. I've heard those things will even turn a bolt with a broken head.
  21. Thanks for all the help everyone. I'm sure I'll be able to get the bolt out , as it was turning, but not too much. The issue now is finding something that will get the valve out because it's rounded off slightly. Looks like someone tried to change it, then said F**k it and plugged the hose back onto the valve.
  22. Can you recommend a socket that would allow access to this bolt or will I have to use a wrench to get it the rest of the way off??
