  1. Scott, you are my new hero. I put together a sandrail years ago with just the usuall VW parts. I bought a 90' Subaru Legacy wagon for 100 bucks with EJ22 engine and 5 speed. Hands down the best car I ever owned. I came across info on guys taking EJs and boltin em' up to VW transaxles but I always figured it would be way to much work guttin' the entire wiring harness and ecu out of the car and puttin it in a sandrail ( let alone getting it to run right) so sadly...my friends and I basically rally raced the car on some property of mine until the car was distroyed . it still ran the day we took it to the crusher. only if i would have known about you!!!!!!!!!!!!! btw great job.
  2. Are the EJ18 engines just as "Bulletproof" as the EJ22 ? Or do they have head gasket problems like some of the other Subaru engines {EJ25 phase I} I have a 90' Legacy AWD 2.2 and that thing will take everything you throw at and ask for more. I am VERY impressed and kinda proud to be honest of this little 4 banger [199,000 Miles] I resently bought a 95' Impreza AWD with the 1.8. It runs really good as well just wonder if the internals were the same as the 2.2 or if they were know for problems. Answers, comments, stories ANYTHING ! thanx
  3. 95' Impreza, On Board Diagnostics I or II ?? How the heck do you, (if you even can), pull the codes out of the computer. I have a Chilton for Subaru 1985 through 1996 and it tells me how to test each sensor in great detail but not how to get the stinkin codes out. Please Help you guys I have a stalling problem thats driving me crazy. I am a little familair with Nissan with the blinking light on the computer itself are Subarus like that too. Or do I have to have a scan tool?? thanks in advance!!
  4. My 95 Impreza has that sweet smell of coolant too. I check the level all the time and it fluxuats a little but not a whole lot. I inspect for leaks as well and.........nothing. Im like you... it just shouldnt do that.
  5. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Im not sure about the codes I just bought the car yesterday, really cheap i might add, thought it might be a quik fix. I wasnt sure on the ODB II (untill you cleared that up for me) ppl I have talked to say it was prob ODB I, it being a 95 and all Even I thought 96 was the first year for ODB II i guess subaru beat everybody to the punch. Can you or anyone else tell if and how i can get the codes out myself? thanks P.S. thinking it might be the O2 sensor, am I leaning toward the right track?
  6. I just bought a 95' Rooba Doo Impreza from a buddy of mine. The engine starts, idles, and runs perfect but when driving down the road it is like someone reaches over and turns the key off and throws it out the window. I then usaully pull off to the side of the road or push in the clutch (5-speed) and restart. It always starts right back up, sometimes it will spit sputter and carry on for a while then it will run fine again. The check engine light comes on ONLY when it is spiting and sputtering then goes off when the engine clears up. The guy i bought it from said he has had this problem for a while. He had crank angel sensor, cam angel sensor, coil and ignitor, plugs and wires and fuel filter replaced and still.... stalls:banghead: . I was thinking Oxygen sensor. A friend of mine had a Jeep wrangler that would spit sputter and stall, he changed the O2 sensor and it was cured:brow: . What do you guys think any help would be awesome. The car is a 95' Impreza, AWD, 5-speed, 160,000 miles Thanks
  7. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Thanks SNOWMAN I think im pretty sure what your talking about. A tube from the air pump going into the EX manifold?? but if not The 'PORT' you talk about on the (EA82) carbed heads........is it in the actual HEAD or on the Exhaust Manifold itself and if so could i get away with changing the manifold (using- spfi block, carbed heads, spfi manifolds- if they bolt up) or would this eliminate the hole for the O2 sensor OR if all else fails could i fill the holes (not O2 sensor hole ) with weld Sorry for the confusion
  8. Hey guys this is my first time using USMB and I have learned a great deal of stuff just browsing around. Anyway, just wondering if the heads on EA82 carb engines interchange with the heads on EA82 SMPI engines. Im not exactly sure what the problem is but my buddy says he is having trouble with one of his heads in his 4WD GL wagon (ea82 smpi) Now I have a 4WD GL wagon (ea82 carb) with an engine that runs. Just wondering if I could help him out with the parts I have.
