  1. Seemed like the air was escaping thru the crankcase. I have the oil pan off, so it's not like I'm getting a stream of air from the oil fill. I will pull the head to investigate further. It's weird that the tag thing was glued right over the bad cylinder. Maybe just a coincidence. If I had to make a guess, the head gasket had a leak, which allows water to fill the cylinder while it was in storage.
  2. Yeah i saw that. What is it for? Does the dealer put it on? It looks rusty in the #5 plug hole. I will pull the head in a few days & get some pics. here's that tag
  3. So I did a leakdown test. All were reading close to this, except #5 cyl
  4. FYI - I started a new thread for my engine build...
  5. Thanks for the info. On my ER27, it looks like if I mill off 0.014", I will get a 1/2 point bump in CR, so 9.5 to 10:1. My only concern is that the factory shop manual states max resurface limit is 0.012"
  6. Hey guys, I'm in the process of tearing down 1 of 2 ER27 engines. Here is my original post asking about ER27 info... I plan on getting the heads worked (3-angle, pocket port, & milled). The cams will be sent to Delta for a 260 dur "torque" grind. I want to do a leakdown test, but this engine is missing the balancer & bolt. Does anyone have a spare bolt or know the specs on it? I tried using an EJ22 bolt, but it's too small (diameter wise). I would take it from my other engine, but it's in California. This one is at my house in Connecticut. Thanks.
  7. Yes, there was a guy in Seattle that installed one in his Vanagon. I've attached some pics below.
  8. Is the EZ30 a non-interference engine? That's one of the things I like about the ER27.
  9. Great info....Thanks a lot. As far as the EJ22, I was going to install one (i have a 90 I pulled out of a car last summer), but I stumbled across 2 complete ER27 engines, so I want to give it a try. Worst case, I will swap it for an EJ22 or 25 (would probably install an EJ25) if this turns out to be a fail. Regarding the NLA parts, I'm kind of use to that driving my syncro. I always keep some extra no-go parts in my van: ECU, alternator, air flow meter, FPR, fuel pump, water pump, distributor, belts, relays and fuses. The one thing I dont carry is a starter. BTW, the sound of a good running ER27 sold me...
  10. Hey, thanks for your input. I started another threat for that.
  11. I'm planning on a rebuild of a '89 ER27 to swap into my VW Vanagon. I'd like to pick some of your brains to identify weak points on this engine & ask some questions: Block: Prone to cracking or warping? Rotating assembly: Any durability issues with crank, rods, rod bolts, or pistons? Heads: Prone to cracking or warping (or leaks - water, oil, exhaust, or combustion gasses)? Head bolts: Any known issues? Oil system: Any issues with leaks or low pressure? Pump durability? Oil pan leaks? Cooling system: Any known or common issues (water pump durability, etc) running hot / too cold? Head gaskets: Any common gasket leaks? Timing belts: Any known issues with the belts or pulleys not lasting to the OEM replacement interval? Accessory drive: Any issues with belts or pulleys? Electrical & EFI: How is the life of the alternator & harnesses? Injectors? Exhaust: Any issues with exhaust manifolds or cracking? Ignition system: Issues with distributor or coil? Misc: Any odd behaviors of this engine? IE: detonation, vibrations, etc? Any XT6 engine related recalls or SB's? Most common failure issue or design complaint? Useful engine life & RPM limit? Feel free to add any issues you had or anything I missed. Thanks in advance
  12. Hello. I'm planning out a ER27 engine swap project. It will go in a 1987 VW 4wd Syncro. I'm budgeting an SDS EFI system for it as well. I attached a pic of my van. Thanks.
  13. I'm going to get my ER27 heads done in the spring. I'm wondering how much I can mill from the surface to bump the CR up about a half point. Should I be worried about the intake manifold not fitting right after that? I'm also wondering if it will cause this engine to be an "interference" engine after that...I think these ER's are non-interference, right? Thanks
  14. Hello, do you have any spare ER27 parts? Thanks
