  1. What I really need is something I can put into my car to remove the carbon deposits in my cylinders without taking the thing apart. (This is actually for my Honda CRX, and not for my Subaru Legacy. The Legacy doesn't have problems with deposits yet. The CRX has 287,000 miles, the Sub 160,000 miles.)

     

    Any suggestions?

     

    BTW, I tried something I saw on some other boards, and I figured what the heck... Pouring water in your carb while running the car after it's gotten hot. You have to make sure to do it slowly so you don't hydrolock your engine. Did it work? Hells yes! :banana: No more pinging like I had ALL THE TIME, even when using 93 octane. Wooo.

  2. Hey man. I'm in Arkansas as well. I often go up to the Ozark National Forest to go camping, and run through the many Forest Service trails they have up there. The best thing was after crossing the Mulberry River there was this guy in a lifted Ford truck who was gawking at me at the fact that I had crossed it in my 'Roo.

     

    Know any good places to wheel in central Arkansas? I should see if there's a Subaru User's Group here.

  3. the hitch for a gen 2 legacy ties in with thru-bolt on one of the factory tow hooks, and bolts ino twhere the other tow hook bolts onto

     

    generally tongue weight is 10 percent of the rated capacity. so in theory that would allow 350 lbs. although the hitch is likely stamped with a 300 lb tongue weight.

     

    i wouldnt worry about the extra 5 pounds.

     

    there would not be a 2 inch receiver available for this car, but there are adapters. but the adapters will increase the leverage on the setup

     

    if anything you oculd try to beef up the rear suspension with coil boosters or helper springs

     

    if you hitch is from u-haul the warranty will replace it even if damaged from overloading

     

    really the way to go wold be to tuy in some guy wires or something similar to supprt the weight of the hitch-haul platform to somewhere off the back of the top of the car

     

    :banana: Thanks for the info! I'll put some loops on the back side of the roof to allow me to offset a few pounds using guy-wires as you suggested, run with a class II hitch, and then get an adaptor. :) Woot!

  4. I went out two months ago, slid around in a bunch of mud, went through where some jack@$$ had cut down a tree, (My bro) and left a large stump where I proceeded to high-center on it. I was an-gry.

     

    Since then, my Subadoom has been making some terrible noises, and I haven't crawled under it to find the cause yet. As such, I haven't been out since. I rarely can get my buddies to take pictures of my Subadoom when I'm offroading anyhow. But next time I cross the Mulberry River in my Legacy, I'll be sure to get pics this time.

  5. Too bad you're not in my part of town. 95 Legacy LS. Arkansas, however. It's an EJ22 in your Legacy, no doubt. 140hp. You picked it up for a sweet deal! I bought my Legacy for $2k, but it's AWD.

     

    Suspension, you can buy struts for the 96-2000 Outback and put them on your car, which will give you additional lift without too much additional stress on the drivetrain. Tis what I did for mine, got an extra 2" groundclearance. You'll definately want it.

  6. This is a semi-related quesiton. 95 Subaru Legacy Sedan, and all the sites selling hitches offer Class II hitches for my car. However, I'm in need of a Class III hitch in order to use a hitch-haul on my Legacy. There are these really cool hitch-hauls to use to with off-road motorcycles, but they require a Class III hitch. The bike is 249 lbs dry, so it's probably 275 wet, and then the hitch-haul is another 30 lbs, so that's 305 lbs, which exceeds a class II hitch limit of 300lb tongue-weight.

     

    What are my options for this? A class III will support 350+, but it's not offered for my Legacy. Can I beef up a class II so it will suffice?

  7. I didn't go with any Jeepers, but I went with my roomies who were going all sorts of places with their Bombardier ATV. Not only did I go on trails, but I decided to literally just go THROUGH THE WOODS as well, between trees and such, where there was no form of a trail. That was.. Um, amazing I made it through. It's on my grandmother's land, so I didn't have to worry about pissing someone off by knocking over stuff...

  8. I think it's a great idea assuming a few things..

    A: You make sure that the new pan has similar or greater holding capacity for the oil. (So it can sit and de-foam a bit)

    B: That would mean making the oil pan wider, since it isn't as deep. Because the oil pan would be wider, you would have to angle the oil pan as well.

     

    All in all, I think it's fantastic. I've seen aftermarket oil pans for other vehicles that offer increased ground clearance or are simply lighter, etc... If you can manage to fabricate something like that, I say go for it! Your best bet, in my opinion, on getting the new thing to FIT is to go to the junkyard, buy an old oil pan, cut the old one just below where it seals to the engine, then weld your newer one to the bottom of that. It will be easier than trying to make something that mates to your engine perfectly, and if you screw up the one you picked up from the junkyard, you're not screwing up the one that came with your car. (And therefore making it undrivable.)

     

    But then again, what do I know? ;) I don't do this stuff for a living, and I've never done any custom fab work.

  9. My 95 Legacy LS looks like it's on fire when it's parked after a while of driving. I haven't gotten around to replacing all that needs to be replaced on it, primarily due to price concerns. Lastly, I have other issues I need to resolve on the thing, such as the Primary 02 sensor that needs replacing, the spark plugs that need replacing, (I was about to do that myself until I found out that someone had put some sort of sleeve on the plugs on one of the cylinders, and I threw my hands up into the air on that one and gave up. I mean, WTF? I was undaunted by the state of the car at first, but I'm not sure its prior owners knew what "maintenance" meant.

    I wish I had both the skill and the equipment to do welding. I would fabricate my own bumpers and such. As is, I suppose I'll just order my bumper from A.A. assuming they ever email me back about it. *frowns*

     

    Yes, my $2,000 95 Legacy is quickly becoming a $3k, then a $4k car as I spend more and more on it.... Oh well, at least it's not a brand new $21k car. haha.

  11. above the pedal assembly is a white connector on an XT6 at least...not sure your configuration exactly. this connector gets corroded and shorts out causing loss of rear tail lights and eventually head lights too. look for a white connector (though that's XT6 info, so yours could be different), so also look for any connector that looks damaged. disconnect and reconnect. a bad one will be brittle and look burned with wire damage. a white connector can be easily browned by a short.

     

    seen this happen to three of my soobs (XT6's), it seems most likely in manual trans as snow sticks to your feet and can brush off awfully close to that connector and short it out.

     

    looks like you live near snow and it's winter, so if you have a manual trans i wouldn't be surprised if you have a connector up there that is bad.

     

    My brake lights are currently working on my 95 Legacy, but the tail lights have just recently failed working. Hopefully your advice also applies to a Legacy. I'll have to give it a check this weekend, and see if that applies to my car as well. If so, I'll have to give you props for helping me fix this mystery problem on my Subie.

  12. My bro and others give me the eternal, "Why don't you just get a truck?" Then I reply with that my Rubasu cost me $2k, and asked if he got 22mpg in his truck. Nope... (13, in case you're wondering) He uses his truck to tow his 4-wheeler, which would not be any problem for the Rubasu, I just have to put a hitch on it...

     

    When I was towing a Honda CRX with my Legacy, I certainly got some funny looks, not to mention the time I just got back from camping, when I had loads of mud all long the sides of it.. hehe When I was out on those back roads going through all of that mud, I had this guy drive by on a 4 wheeler looking at me like I had lost my mind. It was great. Haha.

     

    Here's the kicker.. I've towed more with my Legacy than most people will ever tow with their Subuarban or whatever blooming SUV... I want to make a sticker that says something along the lines of, "I offroad more in my CAR than you do in your TRUCK!"

     

    And lastly, since we're getting some winter weather finally down here in Arkansas this year, a coworker was saying that she didn't want to drive in "That stuff." I asked "Why, your truck has 4 wheel drive, right?" She replied No. My reply? "What's the point of a 2 wheel drive truck?" She wasn't pleased. haha

  13. I've been trying to find some good replacement Rear Struts for a 98 Legacy Outback. Was looking for KYB, but I have not found a site that has them?

     

    If you have a source, please let me know.

    I've used http://www.rockauto.com to get my KYB struts for my 95 Legacy. (I put 96 Outback struts on it.) Don't forget your bellows and bumpers...

  14. That Legacy looks really good, I like it!

     

    Question: Have you had any rubbing with the 205/75/15 tires? I ask because I have that size in a Firestone A/T tire on my 97OB, and they rub *slightly* when turning and going thru dips. I wouldn't have thought that going up from 70 to 75 on my car would rub but I think it's a combo of the larger size and thicker tread due to the type of tire.

    I wonder about rubbing too. Is it a problem? Because you've pretty much done to your Legacy what I want to do to mine.... I need to finish lifting mine. It looks silly, as the front is lifted, but the back is not. hee.

  15. Any fellow Rubasu owners in Arkansas? Looking for someone in the area to buddy up with for offroading, and help each other with Suby mods/lifts/etc. (I'm not afraid to work, but there are plenty of things that having a second person to assist makes a world of difference.)

     

    95 Legacy LS, lifted front with KYB Outback struts, haven't had time to get to the back yet. (Stupid day job!)

  16. I have a 95 Subaru Legacy LS with 140K on it. I bought it used about 4 months ago and I know it was not well cared for since I replaced so many things on it since.

     

    For the past few months it has been producing a bad smell when I come to a stop or when I get out of the car. I'm thinking probably ATF, since it doesn't smell like burning oil and I've inspected the brake lines that go over the exhaust y-pipe.

     

    I changed the pan gasket on the tranny since it looked like it was leaking there, right at the front of the pan, then dropping down and dripping onto the Y-pipe. I could see white puffs of smoke when I got out and looked under the car, as small drops of the stuff landed on the hot exhaust.

     

    One weird thing is that I can see these same puffs intermittantly that seem to come from inside the heat shielding on the down pipes that come straight out of the engine.

     

    No clue, but would really like to get rid of the smell.

     

    My 95 Legacy LS does the same thing. I haven't quite figured it out yet, but I just keep monitoring fluid levels to make sure everything is OK. I don't have the $$ to do the necessary repairs to it until I sell my 2000 Civic HX. (Which I'm selling, because it's the only car of mine in great condition. All the others I bought used and abused.) My Legacy has 160k miles on it. I should get under there with a pressure washer or something.. lol. (The whole engine needs some serious cleaning to get off a deep layer of dirt that came from the prior owners.)

  17. I've managed to cross a "river" in my Legacy, but the water was only 1.5-2 feet deep. Plus, the bottom of the riverbed was smooth river-rocks. :) The water was crystal clear, until I plowed through it. lol. I'm too afraid to take mine swimming like some of the pix in this thread.. Not until I finish my lift on it, and maybe have some form of insurance I won't suck water in the engine.

  18. To me, the important part of this news is that Toyota is buying GM's stake in Fuji Heavy Industries. That makes Toyota the top shareholder in Subaru. Not sure what that means for Subaru - maybe Subaru will get some hybrid tech in exchange for giving AWD tech to Toyota? Toyota has a good reputation for quality, hopefully Subaru gets some of that as well.

     

    Subaru recently demo'd an all electric vehicle with an extended range and the ability to charge to 90% capacity in around 10 minutes. Toyota realizes that with current gas prices, that hybrids are merely a step. By purchasing a large portion of FHI, they can obtain the fast-recharge lithion ion battery tech that they have produced for use in Toyota's hybrids and own EV technology. Japan despises it's reliance on foreign oil, hence their fuel-efficient vehicles, appliances, etc...

     

    The move to all-electric vehicles would allow Japan to obtain more energy independance. Plus, Mitsubishi has been working on an AWD-Evo that has four in-hub motors that produce a total of over 1,500 ft-lbs... I'm not kidding here.. However, Fuji Heavy Industries has the best rechargable battery technology right now that's possible of powering a long-range EV that has such a short recharge time.

     

    I think the biggest problem for them on this will be how to get enough CURRENT to charge an EV in 10 minutes... (100 amp draw for an hour will get you roughly 60 mintes..) 60ampX100..... You do the math, that's enough of a load to blow most house fuses... Anyhow, it's SLIGHTLY off-topic, but not really. hehe.

  19. How much were the outback GR2's?

     

    I want to say around $65 each at rockauto.com plus shipping. Be sure to order the Bellows too, if your current ones are blown, which is very likely.

     

    Bellows are $15 each, plus shipping..

     

    Be sure to have spring strut compressors. I had posted some time earlier a writeup on doing this... I'm sure you could find it by looking up all of my posts, or doing a search. If not, I might be able to find it.

     

    My recommendation is to go to the KYB website, find the model #'s you need from their site for a 96 Outback, since I think I remember your tagline stating having a 95 Legacy? Anyhow, it gained me around 1.5" gain.. If I were to add stiffer or Outback Springs, it would likely gain me the full 2" that everyone on here seems to pimp.

     

    Of course, now my camber is screwed up, so I'll have to get that fixed by someone with a bit more automotive skill than I. (Like a real mechanic.)

     

    I'll have to upload my before/after pix some time soon when I'm not feeling lazy..
