  1. On my '00 I had the same problem.Since then it has happened to both sides. The problem is the connector that plugs on to the spade on the bulb. They must burn up or something. The only way I could fix it was to cut it off,buy a new one and solder it back on.No problems since.
  2. I did change it myself and would do it again except they are well over $200 up here in Canada and I would like to know for sure that that would fix the problem.Should a dealership be able to do any tests to determine this?
  3. So what I am thinking is I'll just take it to a dealer and have them fix it.Hey Nipper,my question is,should they be able to tell if the that new sensor I installed isn't reacting quick enough or will they just start replacing stuff until the light goes out.I like to be able to sound well informed when I go in so they don't try to screww me over.
  4. I think the first step for me will to have the codes read again to make sure it's the same one. This really bugs me because I had a Neon that had a CEL issue before and it is annoying to look down at the dash and see that orahge glow of that damn light.
  5. For those of you who have been following, my Outback had the CEL on and a code 420 was set.The general consesus was that it might be the front Oxygen sensor. So recently I changed and 2 days later it is back on.Now I haven't had the code read yet so I don't know for sure that it is the same code but that would be my guess.Any suggestions?I know the code actually says it's a CAT problem but I am hoping it's not. What about the rear sensor. What does it do?
  6. I was changing it due to a 420 code.I changed it last night so we'll see now if it's fixed. Thanks for all your input. It went pretty smoothly.A mechanic friend had a sensor wrench for a ratchet and it worked great.
  7. I have access to a hoist so getting under the car is no problem .The problem is getting a wrench in there.I'll try some of your suggestions.
  8. I tried to reach it with a regular open end wrench but there's no way to get it in there.
  9. I have to replace the front oxygen sensor on my Outback and I got under it to spray it to loosen it up and my question is how do you get a wrench on it?It is buried in the heat shield and above the Y pipe. What is the secret to getting it out of there?
  10. Is there much difference in size between the Legacy/Outback platform and the Forrester.
  11. My brother has a new Legacy with the 2.5 turbo and he loves it.I just wondered how they would stack up against the H6 for everyday family car use.I have noticed you don't read many posts on here about the H6.
  12. How do the two engines compare for reliabilty,performance..etc.What about the turbo version of the 2.5.I see the horsepower rating is similar but for everyday family use what would be the better engine?
  13. Any sites I have checked list a Bosch 17018 as a replacement for the front oxygen sensor.I hope that's right because I have ordered one.
  14. Is there any point to just having the fluid changed in my auto transmission in my Outback or should the filter be done as well? What about the differential fluids?Should they be changed and is it a big deal to have them done?
  15. Just got the work order from dealership. They did head gaskets, timing belt, timing belt tensioner, thermostat,an undercoating recall, coolant conditioner recall and a A/F ratio sensor recall.
  16. I have a 2000 Outback with a 2.5 and it uses approx. 1 litre of oil every 4000 kms.I don't see any evidence of leakage so it must be burning it but it doesn't smoke at all.Where could it be going? Is this normal?
  17. Thanks so much.I just found out that the belt was done on this car at 100,000 kms.So this belt has approx. 70,000 kms or 35,000 miles. It should be good for a while yet.
  18. I know it's been discussed a thousand times but when I search the threads, other engine sizes and stuff get mixed up with the topic so here goes.I have a 2000 Outback 2.5 with approx. 170000 kms.I understand the the timing belt should be done. I would like to have a list of the other things that should be done at the same time to give to my mechanic so it gets done the right way the first time. Thanks in advance.
  19. The connector that I changed was on the bulb/hot side.I just went out to check it and there was voltage at the bulb so I pulled the bulb and changed it and it lit. We'll see if it lasts. sorry for being such a pain Nipper but this problem is really frustrating.
