  1. I have 94 Impreza with a 1.8L so can I assume going by what it being mentioned that mine is also a non-interference motor?
  2. Thanks for the help...My follow up question is if I was to replace the crank seal....Do I have to replace the front and back or can I just replace the front seal. On the oil pump. If I was to do a rebuild. Is it just three one gasket and 2 seals? Is there any where on a rebuild to get more info on a rebuild of an oil pump? Finally, My big concern is timing....I have been reading and what I can read is mostly on the 2.2 legacy...Alot of what I read is the need to lock the cam on order to prevent it from spinning? What is the easiest way to adjust the timing before demantling the vehicle.
  3. Sorry for the confusion on my earlier post....Let me explain a little bit better. I have 1994 Impreza L with a 1.8L...Great car. It has 205,000 miles currently. When I purchased it in 1999 it had 113,000. To my knowledge the timing belt has never been replaced. If so I wasn't aware of it and I have never replaced it. Recently I went to Ottawa for vacation. I had an issue of the car smoking badly when ever there was a strain on the motor ie...mountain driving. So when I arrived in town I had several mechanics look at it and they all told me that the oil pump was bad and at the same time I should replace the water pump and timing belt as well as the tensioners. Underneath of my car was saturated in oil. When I got back to Maine. Mechanics gave me quotes of 900.00 to 1200.00 for replacement of the oil pump, water pump and timing belt. Inculding the two local subaru dealerships although they told me not to replace the tensioners as they don't go bad unless they break by force. I am a student in college and don't have that type of money to shell on this car so I priced the parts and found good deals at Advance Auto Parts. My question is this. While I am machanically incline and can fix cars with some ease. I have never worked on a Suburu other then basic maintence. Is this a somewhat simple task. What is the degree of difficulty. Also do I have to have any special tools for removing either the oil pump, water pump or timing belt and do I have worry about adjusting the timing to top dead centre when removing the belt. Also reading in the text...I see threads about leaving the timing cover off. Is that a wise thing to do? Also do I need any type of sealant for the mounting surfaces of the oil pump and water pump. I have a Chilton Service Book book but it is not done very well so any other info you may be able to give...I would appricate it very much Thanks Chris
  4. Hello, I am having the same problem....I was travelling on vacation and while in the White Mountains...I noticed the smoking and acrid smell. When I got to the hotel...I called around to service centres and was told that the oil pump was leaking. Now so you know...I have a 1994 Impreza L with 205,000 miles. I bought the car with 113,000 in that time...I have keep up maintanence on the car but I have never had an engine issue. Did all my oil changes and tune-ups every 3,000miles. However I have never replace the timing belt and I am not sure whether it has ever been replaced in the lifespan. Anyways, My question is this. I know I have to replace the timing belt and I have intenstions on doing do, but when I replace the oil pump should I replace the whole oil pump or is it just a series of gaskets and seals. Also is it a necessity to replace the water pump. Should I replace the Cam seals or seal?. I was told that I should not have to replace the tensioners unless they break? Is that true? Final question...Is this a lengthy process to repair and does it require any special tools. Thank you for all the help...Those picture really helped me. Sorry for the spelling.
