Subaru SVX: Opinions, problems

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am currently looking at purchasing a 92 SVX (right hand drive). Will be getting it cheap as it needs cambelt and water pump done (which I will do myself) and rest of it is pretty straight.

Good idea or bad idea?

Anything I should be aware of? Gearbox appears to be in good nick.

Opinions, ideas?

You will probably get some advice here from some owners (me included),

but the link to the site above is ALL SVX. Will have a better idea of what you are getting into there from a much larger knowledge base.

The biggest problem that the early ones had is the 4EAT transmission.

If you are sure that its been gone thru or replaced and that the rest of the car looks to be in fair shape, I say get it.

over here windshields are insanely expensive as are other parts.

wheel bearings typically go out.

transmissions have issues - get an aftermarket trans cooler and change the ATF right away (multiple times if you're draining it as it only gets a portion of it out).

like rob said, all of those things will be addressed specifically on the SVX forum.

great, reliable vehicles once you understand those small quirks.

Have to wait for my account to be activated on the svx forum

The only reason the 4eat was installed in these cars was that suby didn't have a manual that wouldn't explode with that much power, correct?

How difficult is it to switch the box for a 5mt or 6mt out of a Gtb? Well, obviously it'll be a *************** but can it be done? Edit: Apparently it can be and someone even makes conversion kits. Nice.
