capn_r
I have a situation where I want to tow my FT4WD for approximately 100 miles. I could pull the rear drive shaft and use my dolly but I'm thinking that if I had it in neutral (5 speed) and all four wheels on the ground (with a tow bar) with the transaxle differential unlocked I shouldn't create any problems for myself. It's mechanical with no viscous coupler to damage. Am I thinking funny? Thanks
idosubaru
owners manual spells this out. it's been talked about 231,343,234 times, did you try searching, i know the answer is already here. pretty sure you can flat tow the manuals since the center acts as an open diff, but i forget sometimes too. disconnecting the driveshaft is probably easier than hooking up a tow bar though. capn_r
The searching I did must have been on the wrong two hundred plus million treads. Maybe I didn't use the correct search terms. It wasn't my intent to bring up a sensitive subject. Thanks
idosubaru
It wasn't my intent to bring up a sensitive subject. Thanks  sensitive - ah, abe! i was letting you know all the information you're looking for is already here, just trying to help, i found the use of a ridiculously large number personally amusing. i typed in "towing" under the search function and Older Gen forum and got a good many hits, including what i think is verification that you can do that: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=97682&highlight=towing
baccaruda
he probably searched for "tow" and got stuck on the 4-letter minimum. I hate that..
TheSubaruJunkie
If you remove the driveline than you lose all the fluid in the trans. Remove the rear CV's and put the front wheels on a dolly. Do not flat tow your RX if you ever want to drive it again. Maybe for a mile if you were desperate, but 100 miles is asking for trouble. idosubaru
If you remove the driveline than you lose all the fluid in the trans. you remove the rear half of the driveshaft, not the entire thing. actually, i don't even remove it, what i do is just unbolt the 4 bolts at the diff and leave it hanging. 4 12mm nuts and done. TheSubaruJunkie
Yeah forgot the EA82 with the 2pc shafts. Well then, that sounds like your answer. Any normal 4WD subie you could flat tow just fine. But your AWD tranny is different.
