EA81 Flywheel Question

Featured Replies

Well my brat is coming along, have the carb all torn out and in the process of rebuilding. Doesn't seem all that complicated as I've been constantly looking over the diagrams. But also am in need of a new clutch. So I ordered one from Kragen, will be here tomorrow. A Sachs kit for 99 bucks and has all the bearings and alignment tool! But I do not know the shape of my flywheel yet as I want to finish one project before I move onto another, I was thinking about ordering a new one, as it is only $60...

The question I have is they have two listed, a 115 tooth and a 105 tooth one. Which one do I have? I already have a rusted up core to give them to cover that charge so I don't have to drop the tranny just yet...

Btw its an 81 Brat with EA81 and stock 4sp

You are making a mistake ordering the clutch kit for an '81 if you are going to replace the flywheel.

What you need to do, is order a flywheel AND clutch for an '84 4WD GL (doesn't matter which body). This will give you the large 225mm clutch setup and matching flywheel instead of the 200mm flywheel/clutch you have now (which suck).

Do this. The Subaru gods will smile upon you.

You don't need or want an alignment tool for this job. Leave the pressure plate bolts loose and eyeball the disc to the center of the assembly. Install the engine and tighten the bolts when it's together. The alignment tool will give you premature grey hair I assure you.

Good thing I checked this before I opened the box...The only issue with this I see is is it worth the 90 bucks more? And it's still just a bolt on, no modification needed right?

And that would make the flywheel a 115 tooth one btw

Yes, it's worth the extra money. The reason the 2WD clutch is so cheap is because no one wants them. They don't hook-up well when you are in 4WD.

And yes, it is 100% bolt-in.
