Crank and Rod question on turbo block....

Featured Replies

Ok, I've searched and i've been gettind 2 different answers, Are the Turbo ea82 blocks forged rods and forged crank and cast pistons, or is it ALL cast?

please someone give me a true answer...

As far as I know, all the stock EA internal's are cast. I don't beleive there is a forged bit in any of them. The crank and rods are rarely a concern anyway as they are both short and thick. The pistons are another matter of course - people have blown holes in them and collapsed ring lands, etc.

I have NEVER heard of a broken crank, nor seen any evidence of a rod failure that wasn't precipitated by bearing insert failure.

I have an EA81T crank and rods in my EA81 that I rebuilt. The only reason is because I got a deal on it from a member here that had already had all the machine work done and it came with undersized bearings, etc - the rest of his engine burned up in a garage fire so I got it on the cheap. They are cast parts though - that's for certain.

Forged rods and rocker arms. Crank "special wrought iron", cast. Piston "cast aluminum alloy". From the FSM.

forged rocker arms? lol, seems like a weird thing to be forged.

Hey GD,

I just looked and I can't find a reference to the rods...I checked an 87 and a 90 FSM. So I don't know for sure one way or the other right now.

I'm going to have to sleep on it.

Hey,

Here's a link I remembered where they state that the rods in a EA-81 are forged. They are a distributor for RAM engines. Ram states that they recondition the EA-81 rods.

The Justy from the same era has forged steel rods with a cast crank. A Justy engine builder states that it has a forged crank from the factory, here. http://www.dustysjustys.com/performance.htm:confused:

So much conflicting information. My EA81T rods looked cast to me but hell I could be wrong. I'm no expert in mettalurgy.

Left is EA-82, Right Justy. I took a ballpeen and tapped both of them, they ring like a bell. If I tap cast the same way it doesn't sound like that. Rod construction appears to me to be the same for both. The parting line is very much alike. I remember cast having a sharper line to it.

But I'm not 100% sure the EA rod is forged. I'm positive the Justy rod is. I was counting on it being forged as I intend to turn one of them 9000 rpm.

I wonder if all Subaru rods are forged then?

I remember reading that EJ18 rods are the same part as they use in the STi's.... can't imagine that being possible unless they are all forged.

Subaru engines are known for their short, stubby, super strong rods so maybe?
