Bent valves, Motor value?

Featured Replies

I found a 00 Legacy GT ej251 in a pick a part and pulled the engine, car harness, computer, and all applicable electronics to run the engine. I rolled the motor over with a ratchet in the yard and it felt alright. Upon closer inspection I have found that the exhaust valves are bent in three cylinders. So I must ask the experts. What would the est be for cost to fix or value of the motor itself. I have rebuilt pancake engines before but have now experience on these. I have yet to pull the heads because the yard says they will refund me in full if the motor wasn't serviceable. Is it trashed, expensive, or a normal rebuild issue.

Without knowing the history who knows. Was it wrecked? That would make me feel a little better...maybe?

Anyway, the timing belt likely slipped. Typically you only need to pull the heads and replace the bent valves and there isn't any catastrophic problems. Not a big deal and actually a plus since it's a really good idea to replace the head gaskets on this known problematic headgasket motor. Nice to have new ones before dropping it in.

But on an unknown engine it's a little sketchy. I'd probably just return it...but depends all what kind of deal you got, how you feel about fixing it, how the car looked, engine looks...etc.

bent valves could mean messed up head,dented/cracked pistons, bent connecting rods, destroyed cams,etc...Just go turn the motor back in and and find another lego GT engine.

or I suppose you could tear it down and see what needs to fixed, then fix it if your up for a challange or something.

That"s what I figured. I'll just find another one. Thanxz

If you dont know the history of it, you would have to replace bent valves and head gaskets and put it all together and take the chance of it being a major piston slap engine or not.

If you can get the engine for a "core" like 50 bucks or something say do it. sometimes junkyards will sell them for just parts if its a bent valve engine. I've bought several EJ25D's for 50 bucks each because they had broken timing pulleys and the valves were trashed.

Ur lookin at about 20 dollars a valve to have them replaced. plus a head set, head resurface, fluids. If you did the work yourself, I'd say 600 bucks should cover everything. If you pay a shop to do it, 1500-2000 dollars
