96 Legacy huge gas mileage drop

Featured Replies

My 96 Legacy EJ22 with 132,000 miles just dropped from 31 mpg to 23 over the last 2 weeks. The engine sounds great at idle and at high RPM. The CEL came on so I replaced the Coolant Temp Sensor last night and reset the CEL and took it for a drive. After I took it for a drive last night I noticed both radiator cooling fans were going even though it was 15 degrees outside. What could be the cause of the low fuel mileage and the fans constatly running. HELP please.:-\

Defrost runs the AC which runs both fans. That's normal.

Sounds like you caught the gas mileage problem with the CTS.

I don't see a problem here unless you verify that the CTS wasn't the mileage problem.

Thank you very much for the quick reply. I guess I just need to wait for the next round of fuel mileage results to come in.

Thank you,

David

do you let the car run to warm it up, defrost it?

This time of year lots of people let the car run lke 10-15 minutes at idle (no miles being driven, but gas being consumed) so they think the mpg drops, when in fact, running it without the miles adding.....go figure.

Your mileage will drop some just with the winter formulation on gas.
