Water Pump gasket

Featured Replies

so, my water pump is leaking. my question is - has anyone ever had just the gasket go out?

The block has overheated before. Not Past the red, but close. The pump itself works as I'm not over heating at the moment just occasionally leaking from the pump area.

I cant buy a pump at the moment but I can buy a gasket. and i'd hate to take the pump out, change the gasket and put it back in when having the pump bad. is there any way to visually see if its bad?

weep hole leaks. signs of bad bearing. if your motor is getting hot, most likely the water pump is not orking efficiently. go ahead and repace it!

When I was real poor a few years back I just went to the u-pull-it yard and looked for the newest, shiniest water pump I could find. Was like $8.

You don't need a gasket - a small bead of RTV (ultra grey) works just great on EA's.

It's very unlikely that the gasket has failed. It's most likely the pump seal/bearings, and as such it could fail at any time. I would say that average lifespan after the weep hole begins to leak is less than 500 miles. Usually closer to 100 or 200. It will catastrophically destruct in a matter of minutes when it decides to go.

It is very odd for the gasket to just start leaking. Is it def the water pump? Or could it be the little rubber hose above it? I've had them go a few times, and it looks like the water pump is leaking. Just a suggestion.

I went ahead and replaced the entire unit. quoted from napa i found one for 40 bucks. not too bad i don't think. I went ahead and replaced that hose you are probably talking about... figured shoot, it took that much of a hassle to get to the pump itself i should probably replace anything that could *possibly* go out! that and the hose looked like it was swelling a bit too.

I inspected the timing belts while i was in the neighborhood.. the guy i bought the 'roo from mentioned they were replaced around the 195k mark. They defiantly don't look like they've been sitting in there for 262k that's for sure. The water pump for that matter defiantly did not look like its been touched.. ever! so I felt good about going ahead and replacing it. from what i saw it looked like it was leaking from weep-hole like gd mentioned. hopefully i put it all together the right way! I'm driving her to work tomorrow!
