whats the differences in the motors beside oil capacity?

Is the 4.2 a solid workhorse like the 4.8

Yes, some of the 4-cylinder engines are speced for 4.2 quarts oil capacity, and some for 4.8 quarts. I seem to remember some WRX and STi engines having the higher capacity. Perhaps someone else will have the full details.

 

EDIT: Turbos can certainly benefit from more oil capacity, so that might be part of the reason. The new small oil filters also lower the overall capacity a bit.

its the 95 96 is what im asking about ........How good dose it stand up to the gen1 leg and are there any no no s

4.8 quarts motor in the gen1 legs thats all I know and its a damb good motor

its the 4.2 I know nothing

I like the 95 and 96 better than the earlier generations. they always seem messier in the engine bay, 95+ seems simpler but maybe that's just the nature of older motors, worse maintenance, etc. either way, same great motor, no issues to be found.

 

97+ is an interference engine and a slightly less reliable timing tensioner design. 96 should still be non-interference.

The squared off bottom oil pan takes more oil than the rounded bottom oil pan. It's got nothing to do with reliability. You can use any EJ oil pan on any EJ engine.
