January 27, 201016 yr Trying to button up my '87 turbo wagon and there seems to be some slack on the outshafts. My friend Charlie was underside when doing the install and didn't really notice the slop at the time. I remember slipping the passenger side on and it seemed normal-no play. When we went to crank the engine by hand before starting we heard some funky noise and upon inspection found the d/s axle hobbling. The pass. side apparently had too much load to turn but a shake with the hand showed the same slop. It was quuite awhile ago that I purchased the tranny so I'll have to check but I'm VERY SURE I specifically requested a 25 spline turbo tranny. Everything about it looked the same as the one that came out with the exception of location of the reverse switch or neutral switch....can't remember exatly which one right now. He's going to swap out the inner joints. Anybody see any problems with going that route? Thanks for any help.
January 27, 201016 yr You need to make sure you get the correct diff in there as well. Is it possible that you got a non-turbo USDM tranny? those would be 3.9 and you're turbo is 3.7
January 28, 201016 yr if it is a manual trans with 23 splines it will be 3.9 gear. the turbo is 3.7 You would have to get a 3.7 trans, or go ahead and swap inner joints and get a 3.9 rear. 3AT turbo axles are 23 spline, and have the larger DOJ that swaps with 23 splines. If you go ahead and get new axles, order them for a 3spd Automatic Turbo. Rear axles are the same on any ea82 The gearing will be different with a regular s/r. Turbo gears are more close together, and on a longer final drive.
January 28, 201016 yr Author Thanks. Yes,I'm familiar with the whole 23 or 25 spline deal. I once used my FSM's to answer questions here about which gets which , and those raised rings which indicate each's use. But those were in reference to USA models. I guess either they pulled a fast one on me or ?? I am positive I requested a 25 spline tranny for a USA turbo model. :-\ We'll see what happened when he or I get back to it. Just had to wrap it up soon after the discovery yesterday and now its going to be freezing for a few days so probably neither one of us will get back to it untill ??? maybe a few days. Good new is the JDM engine has great compression and runs really fine.
January 30, 201016 yr Author Report came in that the car runs very well and with 4WD engaged on icy dirt/gravel there was no binding noticed. My friend changed the inner joints up front. Test drove it a couple hours ago. Used FWD on the pavement for a short run too. I sure do have the 3.9 rear ready to drop in if needed but as of right now it appear it might not be necessary... So , could a JDM have 23 splines on their turbo trannies?
January 31, 201016 yr I don't know. But JDM...I got a power steering pump an a water choke on one EF-12, before I knew they existed. Doug
