February 1, 201016 yr So I have an interesting situation. I've had this issue before but don't remember what the issue was. I've been driving around for a couple days now and noticed my oil pressure gauge says a big fat zero. Naturally i would assume 1 of 2 things.. the gauge is bad or the pump itself actually went kaput. I was going to get one of those manual psi gauge and drill it in to confirm weather or not the gauge is bad. I know there is oil in the engine, and i *knock on wood* haven't seized. I added a quart just for giggles and noticed that the guage went up. so it is working. I noticed before that when i change the oil, the guage comes back.. so my question i guess is this - is my pump going out? or what does anyone think is going on? -Justin
February 1, 201016 yr So you added oil and your pres went up? Sound like your loosing oil, see any oil under the engine? compression? I would keep a eye on the engine temp if I were you.
February 1, 201016 yr Author Engine temp has not gone up, not leaking any oil, and not burning it. Exhaust smells good too. Oil is normal colored, coolant is green. the engine did kinda buck at me a few times this morning but that was it. -Justin Edited February 1, 201016 yr by crazyman03
February 1, 201016 yr When my oil pump went the gage just went to zero.. occasionally when the Tach was higher it would raise a little. The engine in mine just sounded normal... I would check the pressure asap. Of course I did not drive it long once I noticed the gage at zero... Oh my nephew just toasted his engine he had a oil leak and did not watch the oil levels... car ran great until the engine seized it did not give him much warning....at all .
February 2, 201016 yr My XT6, Has a BRAND NEW OEM Oil Pump, and at idle my gauge says 0. and 30 on the free way. and 45 when cold. But I know its better than that because my oil is clean. No TOD unless I park funny over night (tilted) I'm cheap and don't feel like installing a oil pressure gauge.

Engine shear forces eventualy break up larger molecules in the oil thus lowering viscosity and pressure. Oil cleanliness is only related as an indicator of oil age. Stock gauge isn`t too accurate in the lower range. Edited February 2, 201016 yr by naru
