  1. I do not know that much about it but.. you could check out what RC model boat builders do to protect there wiring.. someone I knew made there own circuit boards for there boats and then they took a substance that waterproofed them... SO they could last hours underwater.. might be able to do something similar to some of electronics.. However I agree with alot of the other members subarus really are not ment to float. however something like this may be able to save the electronics in a flood. Provided you are attracted to those puddles... (I know it can be addicting.)
  2. hey my subie just started doing some different things.. 1986 subaru gl 4wd. hatachi carb.. first off the timimg belts went we fixed them and also fixed the oil pump.. after doing this we found that one of the vaccum? lines on the carb was broke.. we plugged that and it seemed to run fine.. (ment to get a picture of it to make sure it was not important but...) We also fixed the exhasut manifold gasket at the same time.. ( the vaccumline is a small one on the drivers side that goes straight up. very small) now the Tach.. jumps around when you are running the car... not too much maybe just 3-4 lines enough to make you wonder second the car starting leaking and burning oil .. when it has to work hard it is letting out some blue smoke...car sounds OK... questions? what do you think is happening? rings??? do you think it could be caused by the line on the carb?? Or do you think it was coincidence. Anything we can do or is it on its way out.. Thanks. would get you some pictures but I lost my camera.

Hey I have a nephew that has a sweet looking I think it is a 81 wagon... only bummer is the engine went.. but if you wanted a nice shell for pretty cheap.....Rust free tinted windows, interior good shape, I am not sure what he is asking for it though.. tranny is good. I do not think it is 4wd though. (been sitting less then a year) . on the other hand I have two 86 subaru wagons that I will let go cheap. but they are EA 82 Sorry I know they are the wrong year.. you could throw a EA81 in and pretend they were older.LOL I am out by Gig Harbor.

  4. Oh this is for the engine fan not the heater fan. Thanks
  5. anyone have maybe a diagram of the wiring for the fan? The fan works when plugged into the battery but through the wiring system it does not. was hoping maybe to get the route of the wires. 86 EA82 4wd wagon gl no AC. Also any general idea of what usually fails here? or what to try first? thank you. do the plugs fail? or what is a good way to rewire this?
  6. hey GD I had a vacuum lie snap off in my EA82 hatachi.. it is a small opening on the drivers hand side in the back under the air filter. We plugged it and ran and it sounded ok... but I wasn't sure if I could run it like that. Or would it be better to disconect the whole component Or should I ask what can you remove on the EA 82 Hatachi carb or is there a link for that.. thanks.... I LOVE your title.
  7. managed to break a vaccum part (that holds the line) broke a timing belt and now I have not enough oil pressure too.. (no it is not just the gage drove it after plugging the vaccum line and well it ticks..) . GRR it is one of those days for the 86 4X4 gl yesterday and today was spend on fixing and finding the issue got new belts on just need to get parts and get the rest fixed...
  8. I was having issues with the car (86 subaru gl 4x4 gl) just changed timing belts (broken) when I took it all apart there were I am sure 2 wires on the sending unit .. I can only find one to hook back.. up.. where do the wires origonate... or??
  9. Ok also found a broken vaccum line.. grr. and now there is no oil pressure.
  10. Don't have it back together yet nor running but I did find a broken timing belt.. I am just amazed that the car still ran on 2 cyinders....I don't know if it was the whole problem.. but it is one of them.
  11. On a totally side note that probably is bordering on blond...Do both sides of the hatachi have the flaps (I am imagining YES).. mine only has one... When you look down one side the one without the flap you can see two screws attached to something at the very bottom. it almost looked like another flap but it also looked like it was supposed to be here. I thought it might be a flap that had fallen but then I looked again and it really looked like it was supposed to be there. If there is nothing down there with screws... I may have found my problem.. but as I have never seen the inside of this carb I am not sure. (I did not want to mention it before and sound stupid but.... after reading your comment GD... it got me thinking) THanks GD for again.. bringing up something that made me think of what I had seen.
  12. Well I looked down the carb and did not see anything.. but I was not sure what to look for and well I have not had the hatchi apart before.... (boy the weber is SOO much simpler.) air filter has a little bit of oil at the bottom of the filter (couple of spots maybe 4 dots of oil) otherwise looked clean but it is not soaked . . but did not see any melted plastic there was a black gasket that was a little bit past the flappy thing that stuck out a little and was a little jagged.but it was at a obvious joint so I dismissed it. planning on checking more on carb and dist, rotor and timing on Sunday.
  13. ok have more info now..Car was driving along and when shifted up it started acting funny.. Popping backfiring) drove it some more.. acted sluggish.. . shortly thereafter would not do hills just dies.. now it is hard to start.. and runs real rough... car would not do more then 35mph.. (son was driving it) (we towed it home) oil/water good did not overheat. but when encountering the hill there was a funny smell.. I was not there so do not know what it was. A friend glanced at it and thought that one of the valves was not working correctly..which made him think it was timing...(it has covers so I cannot glance at the belts) I do not have time to mess with it until the sunday (and then only a couple of hours) would like to get a general idea of what all to check. however probably not connected I have been having trouble with wiring.. the heater fan will turn off and on when you play with the headlights.. when you mess with the winsheild wipers up front the headlights need to be on and when you turn on the rear ones the front ones die.. so there is some issue there but do not think it is connected. SO there are some electircal issues too but do not see where they are connected.. unless some relay or something....???? Thank you so much
  14. was driving down the road and the car started hicupping or popping (maybe through carb?) and running rough.. not sure where to start. 1986 GL wagon. has went through about a 1/2 tank of gas so do not think it is a gas issue as it would have started earlier. ANY ideas??? of what to check where to start. the only things that I could think of were maybe jumped time, something haywire with distibuter?? or??
  15. Well turns out the fan people were right.. I had some time today to sit and watch and well it never came on..ran it for 5 minutes after the engine was warmed up (after a 40 minute drive) I thought it had come on at one point as it is hard to see but it never budged.. I think it is yes electric. Radiator looks good so I will try the fan and go from there.. It seems to have a different shroad around the fan then my other car (they are both ea82 both 86 one has AC one does not) this one seems so tiny.. in comparisson.. is it easier to fix the fan or get another at the junk yard.. (this car does not have AC.) Is it easier to mess with this one and get it running or check out the junkyards? THANK YOU ALL
  16. Personally we have had fairly good luck with shops but when my husband drove tow trucks he saw first hand which ones did good work and which ones did not. we go one place sometimes for things he does not have time to fix. (he works sometimes up to 80 hrs a week) which does not leave much time for repair work. BUT yes he only Trusts one shop near us.. the rest he would not touch at all. And at the one family owned shop he only lets certain mechanics work on it. (he usually takes in our ford titan V 10 ford as it is a BEAR to work on) the Subies he fixes himself. we maybe go in once every couple of years... but when we go in we usually get VIP service there. (my sister uses the same shop and does not get as quick turnaround or as good of work.) MOstly though we go over to a relatives house that has a lift and all the tools and get the job done there. and another friend that has a tow truck usually rescues us when we break down.. I guess it makes it more fun when you work together with people to fix your issues. nothing like working on something to give you a better perspective on it.. Of course I have really only fixed little things we have a system I find out what is wrong or get a couple of good guesses talk to him I buy the part if it is easy to install I might do it if it is more complex he takes care of it. It has been alot of fun learning about how my little car works. Takes some of the load of his shoulders just researching the issue and getting the part.. I have been amazed at how much I have learned in the past year of owning my subie... they seem so easy for the most part to fix..first real foreign cars we have ever owned other then a EA81 subie when we were first married that we had 6 months..(the lemon of all lemons.. took my spouse forever before I could talk him into another subie and now we have matching ones:lol::lol:he is still not sure about that) Probably the garage issue is why people seem to like sites like this that make it easy to fix there cars.. especially when they have a knack for picking old cars.. (52 dodge, 65 dart, 86 subie, 86 4x4 subie,92 ford van, 98 ford van. I really want a pierce arrow though.. my dream car) THANKS ALL for all the help. you are way better then a shop.
  17. Well I guess as suggested that the fan is the cheaper of the two solutions and probably the easiest fix.. I will investigate into that further and see what is the issue.. Let you know what I find.. Might take me a while though. Fan appears to work..but it could be slow.
  18. Sorry forgot about that 1986 subaru wagon Gl EA82 engine... Hatachi carb... Thanks you have given me some things to think on... Yeah definatly would want to shut off the car before sticking ones hands down there To check the rad..LOL. I do not think it is the Tstat because you can watch it go down when you are driving seems to open and close....farely well.. Water pump... moves water as it should when you rev the engine it goes up and down in the radiator...swirls nice NO Bubbles.. but it does just sort of sit at a idle.... a little.kind of overflows a little. still moves but more out then down... would that be the pump.. when you rev it even a little it is like flushing a toliet .... it moves FAST. Fan seems to work fine only one fan... have not felt the radiator yet..working on that..still has timiing belt cover so less room then my last car..IF it is the pump.. they are NOT going back on.
  19. Thanks.... I do see that..SO pump should be fine..
  20. Will check the fans first .. I have not looked at them should have first off. I think it works but...then the hoses.. How can you tell if the water pump is functioning correctly?
  21. I know that there is a guy out by us that custom makes gaskets for any car.Don't know how much he charges but...Always a option. I think?? he ships but not sure. He manily deals with rare and classic cars and is a wiz at it. Also sells old stock.. http://www.olsonsgaskets.com/products.html I think this is his web page.. Guy is in his 60's and KNOWS CARS. Helped us out a bunch with our 52 dodge...very informative. (friend of a friend of ours) HE has rebuilt personally tons of old cars mostly american but....I tend to go over there and Drool....at his current project.
  22. My car has been running great but If I let it sit for long periods of time 5-10 minutes the temp gage raises consiterabily. NOT overheating but close. It runs fine within normal temp readings just no sitting in stop and go traffic. NO loss of coolant. I can drive it for hours without the temp rising but then when I stop if I let it run it raises (takes about 5 minutes for it to start to raise). Does this sound like radiator to you? Visual inspection looks fine... but I had issues with my other subies radiator and I THINK I remember it behaving like this. Just looking for a second opinion. Want to catch this one BEFORE I have to do the heads. THanks ALL
  23. When my oil pump went the gage just went to zero.. occasionally when the Tach was higher it would raise a little. The engine in mine just sounded normal... I would check the pressure asap. Of course I did not drive it long once I noticed the gage at zero... Oh my nephew just toasted his engine he had a oil leak and did not watch the oil levels... car ran great until the engine seized it did not give him much warning....at all .
  24. The worse would have to be this summer I rebuilt my 52 dodge flathead 6 engine .. got 500 miles out of it when it began to overheat and knock really loud ... still figuring out what I did wrong but one of the bearings in the engine disappeared into small peices. I am just now tearing it apart to figure out what happened..(rebuilt it in a shop with small kids so it could have been anything) Oh this was my 3rd rebuild the first 2 went perfect .. the first one I finished it threw in the motor and we moved from CA to WA within the week. No issues... and very little mechanicall experiance now I got 15 years more experiance..
