You can pick up the kind that screw into the oil pump to give you a accurite reading. (test gage) The first time my car did what yours did it was the pump the second time it was the wiring to the gage. If it started ticking after the lower pressure I would think pump but.......I am not a mechanic. Anyhow I would tell you to listen to GD he is usually right. If you have the EA82 engine I think you have to mess with the timing belts to put in a new pump. It was not too bad on my car it was easier then changing the head gaskets. The hardest part was getting it timed right afterwords but we had that issue when we replaced the HG too. You could very easily do it in a evening after work. THere is a very good diagram for the timing belts. http://offroadingsubarus.com/timingbelt_ea82.html

My EA82 overheats daily. Help please!!!
akc replied to catalina68's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I changed my radiator and it cooled mine right down (until I started having water leaks from the hoses I should have replaced. ) I was having the same exact problem as you are having. You should be able to find another radiator for a little over $100. -
I used to live in grass valley and it was always hard to get our then 1980 subaru to pass smog. I am so glad to live in WA now. the smog is better and where I recently moved I do not have to deal with it at all (YET, fingers crossed). I do feel very sorry for folks that have too. Things are catching up here though so it probably will not be long. but for now my subie can smog all it wants too. but with Gregoire in office here it will not be long. Good thing you passed.

Thanks AGAIN GD will try that.

I did have some sqealing but attributed that to the AC however it does sound like a rubbing sound occassionally coming from the engine compartment. We had trouble putting the oil filter although we finally got it on so yes there is a lot of grease there. THe alternator is one of the few big parts we have not replaced (also have not replaced the starter) And as our last Subaru needed one I would not be suprised if this one does. (maybe it did not like the overheated engine ?????) will check the wires but they seem to be hooked up. I believe it could happen this summer we worked on something else and went in and turned on the AC it did not work we had forgotten to plug it back in.

Ok fixed the head gaskets and now I have a host of problems. I think I have figured out what to do with the oil gage now I have a new issue.. I noticed after I fixed it that the volt meter was down to about 10 which is lower then it usually sits but as other gages seemed to be haywire I did not pay it too much mind then today, on the way to town it slipped down to 8 and when I turned off the car I could not start it (about a 50 minute drive) I pop started it turned everything off and drove home (I would have made it but some idiot cut in front of me and stopped and I died one mile from home going up hill. After that hill I would have been home free.) everytime I hit a stop light my clock would fade out and then when I would get going it would light up again. I think????? It might be partially charging or was..... does this sound like a dead dying alternator or a bad belt connection. bad battery?? (had to take alternator off when I did gaskets) or??? the belt appears to be on right but might be a little more forward then it used to be. It worked perfectly fine until we took everything apart that is the only reason I mentioned belt. Problem number 2 My air conditionar died in all this and I wondered what is the best way to go shut it off and STILL have heat and a defroster. I shut off part of it but aparently I did not do it right as now the fans won't turn on at all.

Snow...... and busted stuff :)
akc replied to zyewdall's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I really miss the snow YOu are making me jealous about all we get here is a inch or two once a year. We almost got a job in Colorado this fall but it did not work out, That would be SOOOO fun to drive in. -
I think you are right the wire off the oil pump is yellow and has some discoloration I believe from heat as it lays across the engine in 2 spots I would not be suprised if it got fried somewhere and no longer has a good conection. Would that explain why the gage pegged out after it blew the head gaskets (I do not think it had high oil pressure) and then when he took everything apart it went down to 0)Or maybe it came undone somewhere along the way. you are right it is amazing that the engine still runs despite what it has been through in the past year. A summer of overheating (leaking hose and a bad radiator plus the weber conversion plate leaking under it) the oil pump going and me driving it about 60 miles without oil pressure, my son driving it with out water for at least 5 miles. It is a miracle it still works. despite what we put it through. I think I have all the water lines replaced now though. Your right I should not complain that the AC toasted. I can just get by without it besides one does not really need it in washington and next summer will be cooler compared to me driving this summer with the HEAT on. while we tried to find all the leaks. The one under the weber really had me stumped. Thanks for putting me back on track and the good advice you obviously Love subarus. I will try grounding the wire and see what I can find and go from there. a new wire would beat wiring and installing a new gage. I do like the little beast. I guess i am a still a little upset that at my son for blowing the head gaskets. It is not the subarus fault she was trying to tell us she had a water leak we just could not find it.

Finally got a oil gage (mechanical one) and tested the oil pressure from the pump. It reads I think 60 at start up. My car has always had higher oil pressure at start up and then after it warms up it goes down to about 30-40. I did not have time to run it a long time last night so I do not know if it went down as it warmed up. I think I will just put a mechanical gage under the dash unless anyone has any clue how to fix the gage on my dash as it seems like it is the issue here (I replaced the spending unit. ) That is one area I have not dinkered with cars. Usually though it has been the speedometer or fuel gage on our Chevy or Dodge cars. I feel weriod driving a car with no oil and another with no temp gage. (my car the temp works my sons is the one without the temp gage. ) Of course the temp gage did not help when he blew the gaskets. (radiator drained too fast.). Now the compresser for my AC went out. will this ever end. I think I will just disconnect that. It squeels pretty good now. Also my volt meter is down to about 10 sometimes 8. I cannot remember where it used to run but I know it was higher before. The pullys and belts seem to be lined up where they go and the car sounds like it is timed right. sometimes I feel like putting this car out of its misery but then i could have messed up somewhere putting them back on. it looks right and sounds right.

Changed the sending unit still cannot get it to work. I was sure the oil pump was good..... The engine sounds good. Still tagged under 0 all the time.

We bought it in january or febuary I am not sure. The gear oil is nice looking and clean looking of course I have only checked that dip stick and do not know what it looks like in the Transmission is there filters or whatever for that that might get clogged? where would I look?

We just replaced ours head gaskets in our EA82 have some mechanical experiance but not a mechanic. seemed to turn out just fine. took 2 evenings after work to finish it. Managed to replace the head gaskets without taking out the block not that it was fun.. but... got the job done. 1st time for us doing it. just make sure you read up before you start. The timing was the hardest but we looked at a diagram with photos online and it made it a piece of cake. and I agree with grossgary replace anything related to the timing belts while you are at it. We made the mistake of replacing our oil pump, then later our timing belts snapped, so we had to replace it, then our head gaskets went. unless you want to get good at timing.....

Hey I have a question I have a 86 EA82 5 speed when my car is in the 3+ RPM range it sounds like you can hear grinding from under the shifter. Not real loud but definate grinding . When you hold the shifter you can feel it. It recently started doing this (2 weeks ago) and has gotten a little worse. you can also hear it grind sometimes when you are shifting not bad but a little. It is a NEW issue and although it does not seem to affect performace I wondered how bad it was? Any easy fixes? or temperary ones? When you run it in the lower RPM range it does not make any noise and sounds normal (just gutless) Is it damaging anything? I have not had a manual transmission in so long but have had 2 Automatics throw there transmissions in the last year. I guess I am a little parinoid. It is NOT slipping at all. I checked the dipstick for the gear oil in the engine compartment and it is normal.

I meant overheating the engine must have fried the sending unit not the engine. (although it did fry the gaskets for the head). It seemed to work till the car was turned off (after it overheated) and then It stayed on pegged out until we drained the oil and now it will not move (oil gage) even up to 0.
-
Yes I bought a not OEM part so that is probably the problem. Maybe??? it did not like it when the engine overheated?
-
got it running last night YEAH did the exhaust manifold as well but still have the CV axles to go in, new therostat, fix the oil gage or figure out what is up (better NOT be the pump) and HOSES!!!!(dont want to put in more head gaskets) Got it timed and it is purring but....... My oil gage is either not working or ??? it is under the 0 mark so I am guessing it does not work (i put a new oil pump in less then 5 months ago ) but then it overheated so .....MORE work to do. Hopefully It will get done this week.

OK i just replaced my heads on my subie the before I replaced them the car overheated and the oil gage was pegged out. now no water leak no oil leak but the oil pressure gage is under 0 like it is not working or something is not working. the car sounds great. is running good but I am a little worried about the gage at 0. any ideas??????????? I replaced the oil pump before it overheated. the oil is swishing around and seems to be flowing. What would you do???

1965 dodge dart. The guy my son bought it from redid the interior all black with a silver and black dash. the motor is fairly new with new disc brakes. it has the slat six but the thing cruises pretty good I keep having to slow down when I drive it. It has a few rust spots under the driver wheel well and passenger plus a little rust on the driver door. He just needs to fix that and paint her and she is almost show ready. It is pretty sweet. (oh yeah he needs to fix the drivers window someone threw a rock in it luckly the glass is flat so it should not be too hard to find a part. Got the head gaskets in (my 86 gl) now trying to time her. Unfortunatly I took it off my insurance so I cannot drive it until Monday when I call my insurance agent. then to the axles and the exhaust gaskets......
-
Working on head gaskets and hopefully that will fix our problem. Then If I have fixed the problem (oil and water disapearing) i will replace ALL the water hoses so I do not have to do it again. Then I have the front CV axles to replace and a exhaust manifold gasket to install then I can have a RUNNING SUBIE again and will not have to borrow my sons Dart. Hopefully I can get it running this weekend.

I would change the radiator I just bought mine for about $120 new. however make sure you do not have a leak in any of the hoses as well. i replaced my radiator and as the hoses LOOKED good I let it slide. but one had a small leak and I could not find it kept checking them could not find it tested for heads both with compression and the chemical thing. No issue found a issue with the weber conversion. (was leaking water into carb) (if you have a weber make sure the water port is closed over just the gasket they provide does not fix it for long. YOU MAY or may not see water leaking under the carb when this happens) Fixed that but still had trouble on long rides. NOW i get to replace the head gaskets because the hose opened up and over heated the car. (I would be losing maybe a quart on a 4 hour drive small leak before it opened up)The one I had trouble with was I think?? the return radiator hose. mine had a small leak on the underside of the hose as it leaked down in the same spot it leaks when you add water to the radiator it was really hard to spot. As it is located unter the alternator it was not easy to see. We had 3 people looking for leaks on the hoses and could not spot it before it opened up. So check the little things too.

Found it way back on the message board. Never mind

What is the torquing pattern and amount for a EA82 head gasket? I cannot seem to find it or my chiltens manual right now.
