  1. I know my subie likes the higher octanes too it is not a turbo but it gets about 2-5 more MPG with Premium gas versus regular most of the time that pays for the higher octane gas for my rig.
  2. managed to snap off my tailpipe today. Still not sure how I did it. I think I messed up the whole exhaust system while I was at it but not sure I have exhaust coming out all over the underside of my car. It sounds really loud now can hardly hear the radio. I backed up uphill into a little pile of dirt it was just enough to snap it off. good thing I do not have to deal with emissions but I will to get this fixed. everyone can hear me coming now......
  3. I guess I am lucky I have a little shop out by me that still cuts them by hand. When they could not find a blank for my 52 dodge they spent 45 minutes checking all the blanks (for the closest match) and fixed me up with 3 sets of 3 keys for $10 (for 9 keys) I took my keys for my subie to home depot they made 8 keys and only one of them work. of course they will not guarentee there work. the little shop though, It is a lumber store, lets you try them and they are super cheap.
  4. finished the CV axles and the wheel bearings. (the bearings were rusted and bad.) (yesterday) and today bought 4 new tires the vibrating when going is now gone. yeah and the weriod things that my car was doing are also gone yeah. it no longer shakes when going down the highway. When replacing the tires 9we have had it less then a year) it was noted that there was 2 different sizes and one size was very worn one even had rubber balls in the tire. but now I have a water leak (by the timing belt ?) and I need to fix the exhaust manifold better one of the bolts worked loose and left me.
  5. working on CV Axles and bearings. HOPEFULLY I can get it back together tonight and finish it. HOPEFULLY it will also clear the problems I am having.
  6. http://offroadingsubarus.com/timingbelt_ea82.html here is the glossy photos for timing I used this when I had issues.
  7. Check the fusable links little black box in the engine compartment pull the cover off and make sure all the fuses are working if you check the forum you can find out which one deals with fuel try that. ( mine looked ok but I ran some wires and found out one of the links was bad make sure you replace it with another fusable link)./ Mine was doing what yours was doing and it was the fusable links Of course I am not a mechanic and it could be something else. but it wouldn't hurt to check.
  8. the fusable links are in a little black box the top states something like black, green, red with numbers. if you open it you sound see 4 colored wires. you can test the link by running a wire from one side to the other (do not leave it that way replace the link as it is a fuse)
  9. Flushed the heater core (per instructions I found on a post here. Isolating it from the engine and radiator) I had flushed out the whole system but that did not work but when I did it as one of the posts suggested flushing it in both directions the debrie worked its way out and I have HEAT NOW WOW. THe core seems to work great and I do not think it leaks will check when I can get the winsheild leak fixed.
  10. I finally found time to flush the heater core and it has HEAT AGAIN yeah aparently there was a big blockage because when I flushed it one direction the water did not move then I tried it the other direction it was sluggish then swoosh. then heat. .Thanks for all the help (in other posts )for all the how to that made this so successful. Now I just need to seal the winsheild so I can have a dry floor. (there is almost no gasket left.)Hope to get the new CV axles on TOmmorrow and then I need to replace the exhaust manifold gasket.
  11. mine is a baby it is a 86 wagon it only has 180,000.
  12. I am not a mechanic or a electrican but when my car did this it was the fusable links are you sure they are working? try bypassing them to see if that is it. mine looked ok. but still did not work. It is amazing what the little buggers can do.....OF course it always could be something else. Mine also work themselves out and every couple of months I have to push them back in to get the car working again or I get stranded. (I really need to get a new box)
  13. Sorry I forgot that fact it is a Manual transmission.
  14. 2 wd 86 subaru gl we will have had it a year in Febuary. it didn't make any noise when it does it it just doesn't move. then spins (but it sounds like it is internal not the tire turning on pavement. It sounds like it is engaging and wants to move. then it peels out then moves. This has happened only when I am starting out on a hill on the flat it is fine. In reverse it is fine. I have not had any trouble with the tranny other then the last month or two it has made light noises when the RPMs get to middle 3 or 4 kind of a light growly noise but real soft and when you shift it goes away. HOWEVER when I turn the car to the right it makes a grinding noise. THAT had gotten louder then lately it has gotten softer or maybe I am getting used to it. (when it got softer though that is when the tranny started making noises not that they are connected.maybe they are? )The noises the tranny makes you wouldn't even notice unless you were driving and used to the car. IT is really soft. ) It has gotten to the point where I almost do not want to stop at the end of our driveway because of the short steep incline if I keep going I have no trouble but If I stop a few times I have had to back up and get a running start. It doesn't like the dirt to pavement thing. there is a small dip right before you hit the pavement. that is where it feels like the tire is not going the same direction as the car IE car is turning tires are straight. you can hear it drag accross the pavement. and then it corrects after the car gets moving. it handles more like it is sliding too takes longer to make the turn It does not do it all the time either mostly when you take the road from a stop. it has only done this about 10 times now. Once at about 35 when I hit a rut in the road it almost felt like the tire would fall off. all the other times it was at start up on a turn. It has power I can get it cranking on the road and sometimes up to 60 before I realize I am speeding (it is 35- 45 there) . We are replacing the axles as there is noticeable grease coming from the boots. I think we will tear into it tommorrow and replace the axles and see what we see. (time permitting)
  15. I figured it is more then a bad axle. I know I did not describe it good enough, but it is hard to put into words especially since it does not do it all the time and sometimes I wonder if I am just imagining it.It only does weriod things at low speeds (under 10 mpg) and other times like yesterday it is rather irritating when I want to get up a hill and it just does not move for 30 seconds and then slowly spins out and crawls up the hill at a snails pace. (yes it was in the right gear) I guess I will just plan on having someone a little more knowledgeable around when I tear into it and pray the parts store has the parts in so I can get her back on the road in a timley fashion.I was planning on doing it at my brother inlaws anyway (he's got a lift. but is a American made car fan but knows more about that kind of thing)
  16. I have been having issues with my front drivers tire it just started up not to long ago. It has been making a light grinding noise around corners and now lately. it has been doing funny things with the tires. sometimes especially on hills when I am stopped it feels like the tire is getting the cue to turn but it does not. Then it peels out a little and moves on. it spins almost internally (I am driving it so I cannot see it it is what it feels like) also several times it has felt like when I have turned the wheel that the tire is moving sideways.(low speed) (again I cannot see it it just feels like it.) I am what most of you would consider a granny driver so the spinning out annoyes me especially when I almost have to peel out all the way up my parents driveway to make it to the top. (everyone else who drives it up that driveway peels out too in my car but other cars are fine. ) I know I need to address this issue as it seems serious but am not sure where to start I purchased some CV axles but Think the issue is beyond that was planning on checking the bearings but do not want to get it half tore apart and then finding I cannot afford to fix it. or in over my head. should I be driving it at all? It only does these things when coming from a stop.
  17. Thanks I will try that I think having a new box in will make me feel a little better besides the old one keeps having to be messed with to get it to work about once a month i have to play with the one for the fuel system to get it working right it comes undone. (we live off a dirt road and it jounces out) I am actually out in Lakebay but listed GH as no one knows where lakebay is.
  18. If you cannot find any I just bought some to replace the old ones in my car. I am not sure when I am getting around to replacing them though. So am not sure when the old ones will be available.
  19. Was reading throught the posts today and was wondering what the average MPG older subarus get. mine gets anywhere from 18-22. It is a 86 Gl wagon with a double barrel weber carb.
  20. SOmeone in the history of my car rerouted the bottom one (closest to the battery)? fuable link I know only have 3 the 4th one they wired right off the battery to under the box then wherever it goes IT appears that the male connectors for the link broke?? or something. It looks like a mess to me. (I also have a 86) I would fix it but am not a wiring person and the car seems to work but have often wondered what wires go to. OR if it was a function that was disconected. Now at least I know what the wires are for. Maybe I should look up a new box. Where can you get the fusable links. I have not tried subaru dealerships as they are all over a hours drive away but I do know I cannot get them at napa.
  21. The guys at the parts store recommended a caulking to put around/ over the gasket mine though the gasket is falling apart. it was like $10 and you put it on like you would caulk a bathtub. Area needs to be clean and dry.
  22. The temp selector is in The hot postition Understand hubby used to drive tow truck and he was called to jump start vehicles that all they needed was to be put in park. I will try to flush the heater core the radiator is new. but I have no idea what the heater core looks like.
  23. Ok here is what happened I had great heat until the HG blew. then when we fixed them the AC compresser went. after that we turned off the AC and now we have no heat. It blows out coolish warmish air but nothing to warm you with (At least this is the PNW not much snow) When I turn the air on COld it blows faster and colder but when you put it on hot it just kindy barely comes out and it is not hot even when the engine is at temp . Where should I start checking. Does this sound like a sticky vent or clogged heater core. and where are those things located? I can hear the fan on but I can barely feel it move out when it is on hot when it is on cold it moves.
  24. I had that one go too. My nephew got a free subie that way the owners could not figure out what was wrong with it all it was was the fusable links. (one of the cylinders is not firing either but a free running subie....)
